You must have being stood right next to me at Leeds, I stood back away from the group photo too. I came in on the 19:35 KGX to Leeds. A very emotional night, and one I only just made. Most emotional part was the guard playing Andrea Bocelli' Time to Say Goodbye over the PA System as we coasted into Leeds.
Thank you for watching and commenting Duncan. It was very emotional seeing the final HST 125s operate on the ECML. I remember my first journey from Newcastle Central to Kings Cross in June 1977 when they started and my last was a short trip on the final south bound service where I travelled from Leeds to Wakefield Westgate. You must have had a great time on that final journey and the scenes at Leeds after your train arrived is something I will never forget. A part of East Coast Main Line history now but now remembered as fondly as the A4s and Deltics before them in my opinion. Best regards - Allan.
Thank you for your comment. I tried my best to get to as many places as possible and thanks to trains generally being on time I managed the four locations. I do enjoy a good chase on occasions like this :-) Best regards - Allan.
I was on a deserted northbound platform at New Barnet station to bid a very fond farewell to the 1935 Kings Cross to Leeds as it made its final journey. And I thought of the time in April 1981 when my Uncle Richard Finlay,a fitter at Bounds Green I believe(may have been Hornsey)arranged for a then 15-year-old me to accompany his close freind Mick,a driver of many years standing, and Bob in the cab to Doncaster and back.I really didn't appreciate it enough at the time, but I loved it.Ive used the HSTs a few times down the years(Kings X to Waverley,York,Bath and Par)but I'm not a regular commuter and drive most places if at all possible.
A fantastic personal story of you experiences with an HST 125 and so nice to here even though it meant more to you in later life. I am pleased you seen the last one going north from London on the ECML. My first journey was 3rd June 1978 to see the Epsom Derby horse race when I travelled from Newcastle to Kings Cross. Many happy journeys since and what a miss they will be to the line. Thank you for watching and commenting - Allan.
Another Iconic class to fade into Railway History, excellent coverage of the day Allan and a great send off, these old girls may be over forty but will be sadly missed by many, cheers nige.
Yes indeed Nige and it will take some getting used to not seeing them around in my local area, although we have still got a few Cross Country HSTs operating in the region. Thanks for viewing. Regards - Allan.
It certainly has been a big year for changes Tony. The HSTs will be a big miss on the ECML. Thankfully they have a new lease of life some of them elsewhere. Thank you for watching. Regards - Allan.
In the whole history of the ECML they were a big part of it Ken, replacing the Deltics, which in turn replaced the A4s and so on down the line. Great comfort, speed and efficiency plus reliability. A big miss they will be on the ECML. Thanks for viewing. Regards - Allan.
Thanks very much Trevor. I am sure you will appreciate the EC HSTs as much as anyone and your archive footage is a great record of their time on the line over the decades. Thankfully we'll still see a few on the main line with the other train operators. Thanks for watching. Cheers - Allan.
I was not a fan of these at first as they saw off my beloved Deltics. But they turned out to be a very worthwhile replacement and have served the ECML well. Fortunately we haven't seen the last of them in other parts of the UK.
I thank it was the general feeling in the 70s when they were introduced to replace the fleet of Deltics. They have proved their worth on the ECML and now it's time for another generation of trains to serve the line. I think they will be around for quite a few years yet with other operators. Thanks for watching, Regards - Allan.
Fantastic video there. The HST is probably one of the most iconic diesel passenger trains in the world and still holds the speed record. Sir Kenneth Grange developed a masterpiece that was born from a stop gap train that was going to be replaced by the APT but to be honest, it wasn't necessary because HST has had a successful career from 1976 to 2019 which makes it 43 years of active main line service. The HST mini's will still be about but LNER HST's are now consigned to the books of history and have been replaced by "Cucumbers" which is my nickname for the Class 800's. Thanks for the video and here is a like from me. God Bless the Class 43 HST.
Thanks for watching the video. These trains were ahead of their time and have provided comfort, speed and efficiency on the Eat Coast Route. I have travelled many times since my first journey on one in May 1978. Nothing can compare to them anywhere that I can think of. Cheers - Allan.
@@allan5919 No problem Allan. To be honest the HST is a timeless train. Don't get me wrong. There are other trains like the Cucumbers, Shinkansen and TGV trains in service that do a good job and the Shinkansen in Japan has reclining seats like an airline. But if I was to be given a choice of riding a Class 43 HST or a Shinkansen for 5 hours. I would always pick the HST. Because the HST Mk3's are some of the most comfortable carriages to exist anywhere and if I may drop a suggestion. I think the mint should issue a Class 43 HST pound coin with a HST on it. I would buy one and now I am going to start collecting HST models to remember the good times with. All the best Ash.
@@allan5919 A fond memory a lot of us must have is when they were new you would look out of the window to realise that you had already departed, the takeoff was so smooth. As they got older the couplings between the carriages were no longer perfect so a certain amount of `shunting' of the carriages became evident upon departure.
Good video Allan. I’m sure I mentioned it before but one of my life’s highlights was when I was working, I cab rode an HST down the WCML. I remember when we pulled into Warrington there were loads of photographers on the platform end and there was I, high vis gear on, sat in the middle of the windscreen!!
