Watch 'Empire Builders - Episode 6' here: • Byzantium, Crusaders &...
Until the 15th century Spain was in many ways an unremarkable European country and for several centuries been the object of conquest itself first by the Romans and then by the Moslem Moors who both occupied much of the country for several hundred years.
But by the 15th century Spain was a devoutly Christian and Catholic country and its monarchy then produced a series of ambitious and powerful leaders. It was King and Queen Ferdinand and Isabella who finally expelled the Moors in 1492, unleashed a bloody inquisition and then funded the journey of the Italian Christopher Columbus to the New World... a journey that was to change the fortunes of
    Spain and the world forever.
The riches bestowed by the New World would usher in a golden age for Spain not just making it the most powerful nation in Europe but a global superpower. In this episode of Empire Builders we explore ten sites that chart the rise of this crusading Catholic empire.

The Spanish Empire was the first global empire in history, as it encompassed the first territories in Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceania.
You need to mention the other territories of the Spanish Empire in Europe (Italy, Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg) in Oceania (the Caroline Islands, the Mariana Islands, Guam, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia).
In Asia, the northern portion of Taiwan.
In Africa (Western Sahara, Morocco, Equatorial Guinea).
And American continent where I include Alaska, (Valdes hence the name in Spanish) to British Columbia.

As a Portuguese, I am fond of my Spanish brothers and sisters. I have visited Spain numerous times. I admire Spanish culture, history, and uniqueness from the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, but I would welcome Spain's decision to join a really Iberian Union. I genuinely feel that if these two countries were united, they would prosper immensely.

I agree 100% with this. The Iberian peninsula should be united in one strong country that is able to have it´s own sphere of influence to distance itself from anglo/frankish/german influence and aim to the Americas and North Africa as we did centuries ago. I really believe if we do this we could influence the world with our rich and incredible culture.

We can't really compare the Spanish and British colonialism, they are very different. And Spain technically doesn't have a colony, what they did was conquest not colonization. The Viceroyalties are integral part of the Spanish Kingdom. The indigenous people of Spanish empire are Spanish subjects and enjoy the same rights and protection under the Spanish crown. The Crown also build hospitals, universities, churches, towns and cities. The Spanish Monarchs also promulgated laws that ensure the protection of the natives. Those laws are the earliest example of humanitarian law. Here in the Philippines, The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas the Catholic University of the Philippines is the oldest University in Asia founded in 1611. I'm not saying the Spaniards are angels, but given that they treated the natives better than the British and French is something commendable during that time.

That is a LIE. British also conquered, and India was also a viceroyalty...but it was a colony anyway...I'm sorry if I exhibit your ignorance, but your own government recognized to have colonies. Just read the "Bando de 14 de Abril, en que se quita á las Américas el carácter de colonias, se les declara parte integrante de la monarquia española, y se manda que nombren vocales para la junta central", given in 14 april 1809.

I fell this documentary its marking a cartoon of what the spanish empire really was.
Starts by saying how brutal the Inquisition was when in reality was the most regulated institution in Europe compared to what happened in the protestant north where they burned women accused of being a witch by thousands with no regulations or a trial whatsoever, just the mere accusation.
Then proceededs to exacerbate how they expelled the Jewish when they were the last kingdom of Europe of doing it cuz every one else in the continent did it without hesitation.
Then proceeds to describe how brutal was the conquest in America implying like the castillians did it just because they had a great technological advantage
When in reality that meant nothing compared with the size of the indigenous army, the ones how made the conquest in the americas where the indigenous population who unified in order to overthrow their imperial oppressors, the ones how demanded human sacrifice by thousands, the most conservative calculations say they killed between 30 to 40 thousand people every year to their goods and in the case of the Aztec they also proceeded to eat the meat of their victims, so there is no question why the other indigenous nations join the conquest against the empires in America.
It's absolutely false to state the indigenous population reduced drastically because exploitation when the Indias and Burgos laws explicitly say slavery of the indigenous was forbidden and punished by jail.
The decline of the indigenous population happened due the epidemics.
Slavery of Africans actually happened cuz the economic power in the Americas raised and they needed more people to work cuz they couldn't force natives to work.

Your're a LIAR. The conquest lasted 300 years, and didn't end. There were more empires and hundreds of indian kingdoms who didn't opress anybody else. What is the justification to conquer them? The subjects of the "imperial oppressors" only changed one master from antother worst. The Spaniards killed MILLIONS of indians by war, huger, mistreatment and desease, and then enslaved the rest of them in several ways, despite the laws. Of course the indians were forced to work, since the Spaniards were lazy and didn't like to work with their own hands. And when they were running out of indians, they enslaved African people to work in their place.

In Spanish America we are victims of a story which basically says the following:
We were indigenous saints. That paradise situation is interrupted for that of some bearded men, singularly cruel, that they only got to steal, pillar, harass, kill, etc. The mythical story that beats in the heart and in the minds of many Hispanic Americans it is completely false and very dangerous.
Perhaps it is the best example in that sense because Spain came to plunder but nevertheless we have wonderful colonial cities, full of riches, which proves otherwise. I mean, What was the intention? to kill all the Indians and set up hospitals? Of stealing all the gold, and fill the church of the Company with all the gold there was?
Spain Came to America to breed to generate new Spains, to do, what Gustavo Bueno calls, a generating empire. Until the moment the Spanish arrive in America, each continent had its race. Here now everyone mixed with everyone. This implies a perception that we are all persons, that above certain differences there may be a common nature, and cultural richness and plurality which are perfectly compatible with the existence of truth, right? The truth is not uniform, truth unites, which is different.

    • @herrero4270
      @herrero4270 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

You are not an American, but a Spanish faker. NOBODY believes in your invented story. Our cities full of riches? You must be hallucinating. Gustavo Bueno is the phony "spititual guide" of the right-wing Spanish "hispanistas", dedicated to glorify the Spanish empire, pretending THEY were the "saints" descended from heaven to "liberate" America.
Plurality? what plurality? Spain imposed it´s religion, language, customs, ideas, way of dressing and even their names and last names, trying to standardize all peoples in the Spanish style. A totalitarian state that would have been envied by Stalin.
Nobody conquest to generate anything, but to obtain profit. Or it would be the worst business in the world. Spain came to strip the Indians of their lands, treasures and resources, imposing its own government and domination. That was the REAL business and nothing but the truth.

So many things are out of context in this documentary. For example, about the holy inquisition:
    - In 250 years the holy inquisition killed 100 people in Spain, while in 10 years the Protestants killed 10,000 in Germany alone.
    - The holy inquisition applied torture. Yes, but torture was applied by the civil judicial system throughout Europe at that time, since before the creation of the Holy Inquisition. What's more, only the Holy Inquisition prohibited the torture of pregnant women, and torture with permanent consequences.
    - Only the holy inquisition required at least 10 witnesses against the accused.
    - Only the Holy Inquisition required a defender for the accused.
    - If a heretic repented and asked for forgiveness, the holy inquisition was obliged to forgive him.
-If the defendant was poor he repented and asked for forgiveness, the holy inquisition was obliged to forgive him.
    - The Holy Inquisition could not judge native Indians.
Some other relevant data that describe the nature of the Spanish empire, which are very little known:
    - Created more than 800 hospitals in America.
    - Created 24 Universities.
    - He created hundreds of Indian colleges, mostly run by the Jesuits.
    - He created dozens of Indian industrial institutes.
    - Promulgated the first law of 8 working hours (Falipe II, 1593)
    - Carlos I stopped the conquest of America for 6 years to discuss, legally, ethically and morally the acts of conquest, its objectives and methods (1550-1556, beginning with the Valladolid controversy 1550-1551). There has been no empire, before or since, that has done this.
    - On July 20, 1500, Queen Isabel the Catholic decreed a Royal Provision in the city of Seville. In it, she prohibited slavery and decreed that the natives were subjects of the Crown, and as such, they had their rights. Yes, slavery was outlawed in Spain in the 1500.

Also, somebody has to tell the narrator how to pronounce the proper names mentioned properly. In some instances, he actually changes the order of the letters as in the case of "Cartagena" which he pronounces "Cartaneja".

When spanish Francisco Pizarro took the last Inca Atahualpa prisoner in the city of Cajamarca, the Inca Atahualpa offered gold to Pizarro for his freedom as Pizarro asked how much of gold?, then the Inca Atahualpa raised his arm pointed his finger high on the wall as a limit for gold amount saying all this room full where my fingers points. The Spanish Pizarro couldn't believe the Inca could give that amount of gold and after talking to his colleagues Pizarro agreed to the deal. Then, the Inca Atahualpa ordered to his people to bring all the gold to fill the room and in few hours it got FULL of gold in many ornaments, all the room that spanierds were surprised and excited. After this, Pizarro took all the gold and called to his priest to give the last word to convert the Inca into Catholicism then ordered to kill the Inca Atahualpa. Since then all the europeans in south America started looting and destroying the Inca legacies in the whole region and took gold, silver, copper, etc to Spain (and other countries)for centuries leaving the same system of depredations of resources even now.
