Superhero movies are, without any shadow of a doubt, the most popular thing in Hollywood today - and that's certainly not something that's just happened overnight.
They've existed for several decades, but they have only reached their current levels of popularity in this new millennium.
In this documentary, we'll be taking a take a look at the path superhero movies have taken to reach their current status of popularity.
We'll go all the way back to 1920, when the silent movie The Mark of Zorro became the first superhero movie of note.
We'll look at the early Marvel and DC movies in the 1940s and 1950s.
We'll look at Christopher Reeve's Superman in 1978, which was the first superhero movie in the mould of those we moved today.
And we'll look at how all of that impacted the more modern movies, which started with the likes of Blade, X-Men and Spider-Man in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Since then, there have been more offbeat examples like superhero parodies, animated family superhero movies - and, of course, the blockbusters in the MCU, DCEU and X-Men movie franchises.
We'll also look at what makes a good superhero movie and what could happen in the superhero movie genre going forward - because there's still a heck of a lot of untouched material to tap into!
We hope you enjoy the video! Please leave a comment letting us know what you thought about it. And don't forget to subscribe to Screen Rant's TH-cam channel, so you never miss our great new video uploads in the future.

Also, Joan died a few years ago, his wife of 70 years. I don't want to imagine the level of depression.

Hey, I actually liked "Super-Hero Movie". It was clearly a spoof of only one character (Spider-Man) so it was focused, it had Leslie Neilsen in one of his last roles before his untimely passing, and it actually had a bit of a heart (the hero "Dragonfly" couldn't fly like his namesake until he gained confidence in himself).

If he wasn't he wouldn't continue to have his own Stan Lee style cameos. >=P And the reason Ryan Reynalds finally worked so well in "Deadpool" is because he uhm.. well he kind of cast himself, as the lead role soooo.... People try to give this movie crap, but It's essentially Iron Man, but the Hulk. And they try desperately to find a flaw in the MCU, which just really isn't there yet.

Seeing as the genre as this video states is dominating the film industry at present! thus this would only further supporting them in continuing to grow alongside the films they tend to inspire yearly.

DC movies are only bad in comparison to marvel movies. Before the MCU they would be considered better than good. Just the bar has been raised. MCU writing is better and the casting has been much better as well overall. RDJ, Hemsworth, and Pratt have carried the weight with a lot of good supporting characters and some poor ones. RDJ will be hard to replace, especially if they try to do so with Brie Larson. Hoping they keep Hemsworth and won't personally be sorry if Evans goes. I find his Cap boring and wooden. In DC they can build with Gadot as WW and the guy playing Jason as Aquaman. Cavill is passable as SM, but no great loss if he leaves or is somehow rebooted.

On the one hand, superhero movies have, until recent years, been hamstrung by the ability of Hollywood to portray them on screen effectively.
On the other hand the superhero movie is filling today the niche Westerns once filled. They are the cultural mythology of our society. They are epic stories of good verses evil, growing up, coming of age, what it means to be a man or a woman, what is a hero, what is a villian, and inspiring people to be good people. The superhero movies that fail at this (like Man of Steel or Batman vs. Superman) are the ones that fail, even more than those who take liberties with the source material. The Dark Knight trilogy took many liberties with the Batman mythos, but they nailed the essence of Batman's nature and the questions Batman raises as a character.
