    This song is so iconic, it's hard to come to terms with the fact that people born in the 2000s might never have heard it before. ;-)

    It’s hard explain the significance and appeal of Joy Division to people who didn’t live through that time. I was already a music fanatic, just exploring and obsessing over every kind of music I could find. I was, and still am, a huge fan of all kinds of rock music. When the first Joy Division album (Unknown Pleasures) came out in 1979, I had just switched my rock obsession from KISS to Rush, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. Joy Division was something completely different from the big, complex sounds of the big rock bands of the time. They’re still one of my favorite bands to this day, and I never lost the memory of how much of an effect it had on me during the first time I dropped the needle on that LP. Becoming a Joy Division fan led me in musical directions that a lot of people didn’t get back then. They thought that we were weird, Satanic, or even gay for liking this music. Anyway, in their brief tenure, they made some iconic and great music that has met the test of time. Listen to the album Unknown Pleasures, then work their their next album and collection of live performances and oddities. And course check out New Order. They kept some of the Joy Division feel and added dance and electronica.

      I'll never claim to understand it, but I can honestly say that I'm not at all surprised by that. Sorry in advance for the book I'm about to write! I grew up in the 90s (born in '84) listening to hip hop and rap, r&b, and reggae and dancehall with a smattering of house music.
      My parents are from a small country in South America and rock music wasn't really something they listened to. I have two fairly older brothers and they weren't much interested in rock music either. We didn't have cable for a while growing up so my exposure to rock was very limited. Having said that I did have a couple favorite rock songs, but that's about it.
      Queue the early 2000s, with the "indie rock" revival which borrowed heavily and/or mimicked post-punk, when I saw an Interpol music video and was instantly drawn to it. I joined their message board and it was mostly people just exchanging music recommendations. I learned about and listened to all of the bands who influenced my favorite band. My knowledge of music exploded and I absolutely fell in love with post-punk. It's my favorite genre of music along with the subgenres and related genres.
      I can't even imagine how amazing it must have been to hear Joy Division for the first time. How amazing it must have been to experience the innovation in their music and that of their peers! ❤️

    This is a classic, it'll never get old. Curtis, like Cobain, left us too soon. Another case of "What if". However, New Order rose out of the ashes and left us a lot of great music. Hope you check them out, they'll even get you dancin'.

    So thrilled you have scratched the Joy Division surface. Just the thought of Ian Curtis and his talent overwhelms me and makes me shiver. With only 2 albums to their name, (Unknown Pleasures is a must) they are by far one the most influential acts to ever come out of the U.K. : tragic, dark, daunting and beautiful.

    It's always sad to see young people listening to Joy Division for the first time, wondering why they lasted for such a short period and then finding out what happened.
    Fortunately New Order were also excellent and everything they released between 1983 and 1989 was pretty much perfect. There are also two great films on the subject of Joy Division and New Order, "Control" and "24 Hour Party People" respectively, that help to tell the story.

    "Atmosphere" could be Joy Division's best song, or the lesser known "I Remember Nothing." My favorite is the latter, followed closely by "These Days," all great pieces by JD. It's hard to think of a bad song by them. They had a tremendous influence upon me as a songwriter and singer, and upon my bands from the summer of 1983 on out. It would be well worth it to react to both of their studio albums, 'Unknown Pleasures' and 'Closer.' JD was very influential on many bands that followed, including their contemporary, U2, then Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead, among many others. Thank you so much for choosing Joy Division for your channel, and thank you for your channel.

    Most Radiohead fans might disagree with me, but I thought their Album "The Bends" was ten times better then "Ok Computer". Also, In my opinion New Order is up their with with Depeche Mode in creating the 80's sound, though what they created was a shadow of what they actually were.

    I suppose we have MTV to thank for groups like Joy Division. When MTV launched 40 years ago this August 1 its play list was dominated by British groups. Were it not for MTV Americans may not ever hear a group like Joy Division. American radio would have a had time playing this kind of music. British labels gave videos to MTV for free it helped the network fill its schedule. American labels wanted money for videos.They saw MTV as a radio station and wanted royalties.

    It's so hard to listen to, knowing the agony he was in, and that he'd soon take his life. But JD made some incredible music, they're well worth a deep dive. No one else like them before or since. BTW it's unknown whether or not he actually had the affair. He certainly loved the Belgian girl, and his widow believes it was consummated, but the girl denies it, and Ian's not here to settle the matter. But whoever wrote that shouldn't state an opinion as fact.

  • @BaldJean
    @BaldJean 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really should do a reaction to the British band Van der Graaf Generator. If you are daring you start with the 23 minutes epic "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" from their 1971 album "Pawn Hearts". They are an absolutely uncompromising band, and "Pawn Hearts" is one of the most experimental albums ever. Nevertheless the album was a huge success in Italy; it was at the number one position in the Italian album charts for 12 weeks.
    "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" has it all - quiet passages of great beauty alternate with extremely aggressive parts that border on total chaos. It even has two ships colliding in the fog. The song is about a lighthouse keeper that gets mad from all the accidents he had to helplessly watch.
