    You have to see the movie „Control“. It is directed by Anton Corbijn and shows the story of Ian Curtis, the Beginning and the End of Joy Division. You will love this movie and there is a lot of music in it.
    You will also better understand the beginning of Punk music and the developement of „New Wave“ music.
    I highly appreciate your approach to the music of Joy Division.
    „Closer“ must be the next step.

    After you do this album and possibly their second studio album, "Closer", i'd love to see you react to their two compilation albums, "Still" and "Substance". Fun fact: When Joy Division played live, they had a much more raw and punk-like sound. They originally wanted to be much more raw and heavy, but this album was produced by Martin Hannett, who's production techniques and style led to what this album became and the sound that JD became known for in the studio. The band originally didn't like the sound of the produced album. They have quite the extensive back catalog from the couple of singles, their material from when they were known as Warsaw, and lots more such as Komakino, From Safety to Where, Novelty, Dead Souls, These Days, Digital, etc. I recommended to you a couple of live JD shows that I'd love to hear you react to each song on as well, comparing them live to their studio sound. And please do the Peel Sessions versions as well, those are simply incredible.

    I'm definitely gonna have to stream this album. This is alienation being expressed creatively. Good stuff here.

    I love Joy Division.In my opinion, they're the most interesting band ever. And this is perhaps their best song. Thanks!

      This number is timeless. I like a lot of their songs but I think that this song stands out. Unknown Pleasures and Closer are remarkable albums in each way. I also like These Days, Komakino and Incubation from earlier in their career.

    Fave track off this album...
    Another "Post Punk" stalwart is a band called Killing Joke (I had written Wire, but KJ is the obvious band to follow up with)

    Hey Daniel, good Sunday, March 20, 2022 morning to you!! :-) It has been a minute since I've visited your channel, and let me tell you, your channel is still good as ever!! Anyways, to me, this music has the sound and feel of David Bowie to it. To me, the music has a 1970s feel to it and it takes me back to that era. That era was a very good time for me. That era, for me, was carefree, happiness, love, live and let live times for me. Anyways, thanks for sharing the music. Have a great day! :-) -Melvin - Sunday, March 20, 2022 - 3:28 AM Mountain Time - Eastern Colorado Springs, Colorado - 38 F degrees

    Moby, of all people, did a fantastic cover of this.
    Oh, you REALLY need to listen to some tracks from their vastly superior second (and final) album, _Closer_, especially the tracks "Atrocity Exhibition," "Twenty-Four Hours," and "Decades," which is the ultimate song to end an album.

    Some of Ian’s best vocals. Hallogallo by Neu! Is a good example of the Krautrock they were probably referring to.

  • @mattwright2964
    @mattwright2964 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is one of the greatest songs ever written in my view, if harrowing. He cited his influence from the Doors and krautrock, but this is very Doors like. A truly brilliant band.

    • @crapsquire

      Right around the time of this album Curtis said he had never heard The Doors.

    • @mattwright2964

      @@crapsquire pretty certain Hookie said Ian would invite them to listen to stuff like the Doors, Neu and Can which they had never been exposed to.

      @crapsquire ปีที่แล้ว

      I might be wrong but I think if you go to the 'official' joy division channel you will find a rare interview with Curtis where he says he hadn't heard them. Besides which, I just don't like the comparison jd were so much better. Doors good, JD peerless.

    One of their very best songs, IMO, gotta love that hypnotic bass line. If you do the whole album, can't wait to watch when you listen to 'Wilderness'. Fantastic bass intro too on that one.

    The sound of this album… and their follow on Closer…. Is a result of the pioneering production techniques of Martin Hannett! in the same way the Beatles had a ‘fifth member’ (I.e. George Martin)…. Hannett was JD’s 5th member…. He is totally responsible for how they sounded in recordings. They sounded very different live…. A rawer an more punky sound! In fact most of the band hated what Hannett had done in the production of Unknown Pleasures…. If they band had got their way… and changed the recording….we would probably not know about…or be talking about JD today!

    Great review of a monumental song, one of Joy Division best although you have 2 treats coming up next with She's Lost Control and Shadow Play. Just as an FYI, sepulchral (pronounced sepul-crul) means relatating to sepulchre (pronounced sepul-ca), which is a type of tomb either cut out of rock or made if stone to lay a dead person to rest.

    Peter Hook said: "Martin (Hannett) was a difficult man, but he had his vision on how album should sounds. He told what and how to do to sound like he wanted. And I'm glad that we did it his way, because, if we did it our way, like Barney wanted, we'd ruined the best album of the century".

    I’ve made several comments over the last couple of years here about the impact this album had on me when it came out, so I won’t tread over that ground again. It’s just amazing that after all this time I can still access what I felt the first time listening to these songs. Great art stands the test of time and mediocre stuff falls by the wayside. Love joining you on your discovery of so much great music!

    Over the years, books have been written, some by actual JD band members, which have helped to explain much of Ian's lyrics. "New Dawn Fades" is not about his despair over his marriage. The lyrics were inspired by Ian's anger and frustration at watching certain British punk fans become racist skinheads. He was lamenting such a misguided, destructive choice, which some people were making at the time.

    I love the guitar and bass in this. I understand Ian committed suicide and the line about a loaded gun affected me having it been a year since my cousins death by suicide. The song is heavy but extremely amazing.

    The first time I saw the name Joy Division. I thought it said Joy Davidson. Some female singer. LOL!. Whatever.
    Ian Curtis was channeling Jim Morrison on every track of this album. Surreal how Ian sounded like Jim Morrison.
    I never knew the bands name changed to New Order. I remember Love Will Tear Us Apart.

    The title made me think of something Coco Chanel once said: “Fashion is made to become unfashionable.”
    Some music is that way. The non-timeless variety. These songs can be a great deal of fun at the time, and kinda nostalgic later, but they never become a real part of your soul, like the more timeless music. In the '70s it was bands like Molly Hatchett or Brownsville Station whom one assumed to be of the moment only. One never got that feeling when hearing Close to the Edge or Supper's Ready or Starless or Sheherazade or Question. One, and even Two, knew that these were timeless classics for the ages. Not a shooting star, but a fixed star. Fixed stars. The Seven Sisters. Siriusly! Finding new souls to shine on. Shine on!

    JFK: Dude. Do you English? If you can't read the comments then maybe edit out your own inability to speak English words...just a suggestion. "Estranged?" "Sepulchral?" Really? These are tough words for you? I am supposed to take you as a reliably interesting or fun song interpreter.... how can I if you don't speak English?
    Seriously, you have no cred when you don't know basic English words. How could you possibly add value or insight to a song when you don't even know the language?
    Edit yourself out next time. I was embarrassed for you.
