What I say about the Shovelhead, after owning my 1974 FX for almost fifty years, is that they are the prettiest, sweetest-sounding, most durable workhorse engines the MoCo ever produced. I've owned Evos and a Twinkie, but the Shovelhead will always be my favorite!
AMF and, Harley Davidson. Back then, that was the deal, and you either rode that, or an imported bike. The dealerships were small, and owned and staffed by bikers. Yeah, I went there, and drooled over those expensive $3,650.00 new Fat Bobs, and Superglides. When the new 1977 Low Rider debuted, I just about shit. My boss bought one, I couldn't. I bought a used Sportster. Then came that goofy Cafe Racer. I loved it. Still couldn't afford it. So, I had my '75 Sportster painted to look just like the Low Rider. It looked so good, it got stolen right away. Well, today everyone and their mom has a new Harley. I don't. I own and ride these forsaken beasts, the ones that got away before. They are imperfect, like me. But they remind me of why I feel connected to them every time I ride. I was just like the guy in this ad back then. Still am.
I had one of these... A 1974 74 CI.....It had 2350 miles when I bought it and about 50 thou when I sold it....I bought it for $2300....It was AMF and I didn't have any problems with it....I've had 3 Harleys and I always run Harley oil in Them......This Bike Shifted Backwards....1 Down 3 up....Came with a 22 front Sprocket so it was fast out of the hole and slow top end...Most of the time I'd run a 24 front...If I got beat racing I'd go home and put the 22 back on and kickass....I'm 65 now and Riding a Streetglide.... A little over 60 thou on it.......I used to have a 69 xlch in highschool.....I was riding that Sportster in highschool when I was 16.... Coolest kid in School......😀😀😀😀😀😀
Yeah ! I had a '74 74in. Superglide. .I loved that machine had plans to keep it forever. I'd forgotten about the 1 up 3 down shift pattern till I saw a video a few months ago. Back in '85 one drunken fool destroyed it almost killing me and my lady as we were leaving a party . had not a friend asked me if we would smoke one before leaving , soon as we stepped away, just seconds, Bang ! I saw my shovel in the air and landed about 15 feet away . pretty hairy experience to say the least. Still riding , a 3rd shovelhead That's all I've ever owned besides an old ironhead. Harley- Davidson motorcycles ...till death do us part... .I got to add, the AMF years don't scare me like other guys they're easy to work on and reliable I call my current 74 "old faithful" ✌
HD does not make oil they buy it from some one else and double the price.. I bought Castrol 10W-40 for $19.00 per 5 quarts for my Yamaha bike plus $4.50 for a filter takes 2.7 quarts engine and trns combined..
I'm 65 and drove the '69 Superbee in H.S. and I got along good with it one of my buddys had the 250 H.D. Sprint and he thought that he could beat me with that so I had to race him there was no contest
First bike was a Honda 550 ,had it for 8 months .Traded it in for a 1975 HD AMF Super glide ,payed 4.218 total. One of the best looking bikes Harley ever made . All i got left is the owners manual and a lot of great memory's ...Harley needs to back to a more simpler time in there bikes to re-capture the young of today ,like they did with me back in 1975.
I have a 1973 FX Super Glide and its a beautiful bike! Its sooo different to riding my Norton Commando 1974. Very organic! Dont you just love the 70s!!!!

That is exactly my bike. I got it in 1976 and still to this day love it. Just installed a starter this year, getting too old and skinny to kick it properly.
I bought a used 77 Superglide in 1978 with 2,100 miles on it for $3k. Put over 90,000 miles on it and never had a problem. Great motorcycle and a great looking motorcycle too. I’ll take a shovelhead over a new Harley any day.
Bought my '75 AMF Sportster XLCH brand new and still own it although I fully chopped it in '77 after doing a cross Canada trip on it in '76. This one was built right!
When I was a kid, AMF owned Harley-Davidson AND Roadmaster. (Sadly, IIRC, "Roadmaster" bicycles is just a Wal*mart "brand" today.) I had a Roadmaster 10 speed, I was proud that I had a "Harley"!....And a vintage Buick! 👍😊👍 BTW, The sound of am HD "Shovelhead" has been "covered", but NOT "equated"!
AMF may have had their issues but it kept the Harley name out there until it was taken back over with the intention of manufacturing a well built motorcycle. Harley Davidson was close to being just a memory and AMF kept that from happening.
I have become the custodian of my original family 1978 HD Shovelhead AMF Super Glide in classic vintage condition, low mileage 7500 odometer. I'm debating finding the right owner to carry the torch with this bike!
Had this bike (1971 XLCH kick start model) AND the jacket. The wiring was the worst, the seat was a plastic, cheesy banana, but the bike was fun to ride.
My roommate had one in 1976. It seemed so monstrous. I ended up starting with a Kawasaki 400, a Triumph Bonneville 750, A Sportster 883, and finally a Sportster 1200, which is a lot like the Super Glide. I'd buy one now if they still made them.
Harley Davidson's aren't really meant for speed. I get smoked all the time when I'm on mine, but I guarantee you I can throw my leg over it right now and ride it to California and back and in Comfort. When I'm feeling like I have a need for speed I jump on my BMW and scare the bejeezus out of myself. Having a touring bike and rocketship is a good combination in my opinion. I'm 50 years old and having 2 bikes in my garage has been the "norm" for me.
You and me both. My first Harley was that year, that color, that exact model. I still have the bike all these years later, but it doesn't look anything like factory stock anymore! 😏
I bought a 1977 Superglide it was nothing but trouble then the cam bearing went out at 20,000. I bought a 2001 Superglide and the cam chain made too much noise at 8,000. I bought a 2005 and the cam bearings were wore out at 22,000 miles. I put in the S&S gear drive and I hope to own a Superglide the rest of my life....there isn't anything out there like them!
Everybody whines about AMF except those who actually own AMF-era Harleys. Yes, AMF made mistakes, but A) they kept the Motor Company alive long enough for Vaughn Beals and his pals to do the buyback, B) they created iconic models like the original Superglide, the Liberty Edition, Low Rider, Wide Glide, Sturgis, and XLCR, C) they funded much of the development of the Evo engine which turned HD's fortunes around in the '80s, and D) they produced the 1974 FX-1200 I have owned and loved for almost fifty years.
There I was, riding my little 125cc enduro around town. I turned a corner & there it was. Sittin in front of the hot neighborhood chicks house. I reckon that was the one that caused the incurable blood infection.
I never had any problems with my AMF Harley’s.. my 1971 night train, 1975 XLH Sportster and my 1979 FLH all ran great. If anyone has old stock AMF Superglide or Sportster let me know!
no it wasn't,it was a time when the same people who worked for Harley Davidson one week before the take over,same crew,same bike, just shit rear brakes,i've the one that they fixed,they put a JAGUAR rear caliper on my bike in 1981 and fixed the problem of the disc brake dilemma,mine works wonderful,it shuts it down quick,my first bike was a Harley,still got it,some things shouldn't change
Don't be ridiculous. If AMF hadn't stepped in, there would be no Harley today. The Motor Company was virtually bankrupt in 1969, and about to be sold to a corporate raider who would have stripped it of assets and sold the corpse for pocket change. AMF's money kept the Motor Company afloat during the '70s, giving it a chance to get back on its feet, develop the popular 'factory custom' lines and the Evolution engine. They made mistakes, but they also kept the doors open. ....and, FYI, I absolutely LOVE my 1974 AMF Harley-Davidson shovelhead!
Shovels are user friendly; just one reason I am so in love with them. On my shovel, I can rebuild damn near the entire machine sitting under a shade tree. I look at these late-model jobs with computer-controlled ignition and all and think 'WTF could I do if this broke down in East Bumfuque?'

AMF actually invested quite a bit into the H-D division throughout thier history of ownership. The probems with manufacturing quality started happening in the late 70's when AMF was suffering corporate wide. That's where they saw long time management retire or seek empolyment elsewhere, and day to day plant operations became lackadaisical. This happened all throughout industry in the USA at the time.
I had a 1974 FX. It started very well - usually on the first kick. n really hot, humid, days you had to be careful to not hit the throttle before kicking it over - it would flood very easily. All the jokes about hard starts and oil leaks were just that - jokes. It was a fun bike and very easy to maintain in top order.
With rare exceptions, my 1974 FX-1200 (same bike as in the advert) has been a one-kick wonder the entire 45+ years I've had her. Learn to tune them and they work great.
'77 was a year of poor cost-cutting decisions for the MoCo. Stamped steel transmission mounting plates, diecast inner primary covers, no forward peg mounts on the Superglide models... Of all the motorcycles I've owned (six of them Harley Big Twins) the 1974 FX-1200 is my favorite. I bought her in '79 and still own her today.
amf bikes were pretty kewl,but expensive,of course $5,000 back in the 1970's was a lot of bread for a bike known to have mechanical issues before you ever put the key in the ignition,like outta site man! later dude.

Not only was at the Harley-Davidson, it was made by AMF. The worst iteration of the Harley-Davidson in existence. AMF not only couldn't build frame properly, I still remember taking several of them apart and Welding supports on to them keep them from falling in half while riding down the road. Frequently you would by one and it wouldn't start because they didn't even put the right pistons in the engine. Amongst other manufacturing difficulties they seem to have.

AMF saved Harley-Davidson. Period. Harley only had three heavyweight bikes in 1969--- the FLH, XLH, and XLCH--- to face the booming Japanese motorcycle industry. Under AMF, Willie G. introduced the FX Super Glide, FXE electric start Super Glide, the FXS Low Rider, the FXEF Fat Bob, the FXWG Wide Glide, the FXB Sturgis, the FLHS Sport Glide, the FLH Heritage, the XLCR Cafe Racer Sportster, the XLS, etc., etc. Harley-Davidson set the Absolute Land Speed Record for motorcycles at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1970 under AMF. The record stood for five years. If it weren't for AMF's investment and the innovative models of the AMF years, which continue to affect the entire motorcycle industry today, and continue to benefit Harley today, the MoCo would've gone out of business 40 years ago. Harley would not have survived the '70s onslaught of the Big Four---Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha--- with only an Electra Glide and two Sportster models.
My 74 Glide is certainly not junk. In fact, it is the biggest hit at the bar with plenty of other fancy new hogs. It's a little bike with a big shovel, perfect vibes for my 'rider', whoever she may be.

My buddy in 1978 rode a 1976 FXE with the US Bicentennial eagle on top of the gas tank. Those were great bikes.

The xlcr of 1977 was the basis for later Harley Sportsters,it had a different frame than mid seventies sportsters.

I have a 90 fxlr super glide 1340 evo. Andrew's cam and screaming eagle carb and ignition with header. Runs like a scalded dog.

I had a 1974 FX. It started very well - usually on the first kick. n really hot, humid, days you had to be careful to not hit the throttle before kicking it over - it would flood very easily. All the jokes about hard starts and oil leaks were just that - jokes. It was a fun bike and very easy to maintain in top order.
Mine always starts with one kick long as no fucker around .
With rare exceptions, my 1974 FX-1200 (same bike as in the advert) has been a one-kick wonder the entire 45+ years I've had her. Learn to tune them and they work great.
Bought a new 77 FXE. Worst POS I ever owned (except for my 77 Mustang II). Only kept it a year and got rid of it.
'77 was a year of poor cost-cutting decisions for the MoCo. Stamped steel transmission mounting plates, diecast inner primary covers, no forward peg mounts on the Superglide models... Of all the motorcycles I've owned (six of them Harley Big Twins) the 1974 FX-1200 is my favorite. I bought her in '79 and still own her today.
amf bikes were pretty kewl,but expensive,of course $5,000 back in the 1970's was a lot of bread for a bike known to have mechanical issues before you ever put the key in the ignition,like outta site man! later dude.

Not only was at the Harley-Davidson, it was made by AMF. The worst iteration of the Harley-Davidson in existence. AMF not only couldn't build frame properly, I still remember taking several of them apart and Welding supports on to them keep them from falling in half while riding down the road. Frequently you would by one and it wouldn't start because they didn't even put the right pistons in the engine. Amongst other manufacturing difficulties they seem to have.

I've had my 1974 FX -- same model as in the advert -- for over forty-five years. Stout-hearted, reliable AF and absolutely beautiful.

then people in Europe need to pay closer attention. AMF era Harleys are fine machines, easy to maintain, rebuild and customize. I've had mine for more than forty-five years, and she's the finest machine I've ever owned.

AMF saved Harley-Davidson. Period. Harley only had three heavyweight bikes in 1969--- the FLH, XLH, and XLCH--- to face the booming Japanese motorcycle industry. Under AMF, Willie G. introduced the FX Super Glide, FXE electric start Super Glide, the FXS Low Rider, the FXEF Fat Bob, the FXWG Wide Glide, the FXB Sturgis, the FLHS Sport Glide, the FLH Heritage, the XLCR Cafe Racer Sportster, the XLS, etc., etc. Harley-Davidson set the Absolute Land Speed Record for motorcycles at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1970 under AMF. The record stood for five years. If it weren't for AMF's investment and the innovative models of the AMF years, which continue to affect the entire motorcycle industry today, and continue to benefit Harley today, the MoCo would've gone out of business 40 years ago. Harley would not have survived the '70s onslaught of the Big Four---Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha--- with only an Electra Glide and two Sportster models.

My 74 Glide is certainly not junk. In fact, it is the biggest hit at the bar with plenty of other fancy new hogs. It's a little bike with a big shovel, perfect vibes for my 'rider', whoever she may be.
