    Man I love these old Harley commercials. Wonder why we don’t see them nowadays, or any motorcycle company.

    I still have a near-perfect Liberty Sportster XLH. Near perfect because the decals were never clear coated (The '77 Low Rider wasn't either) and they shrink and crack a bit over the years. Repop decals are available, but this is how you tell the real thing. Also, these bikes had sparkles in the black paint. Glad these old promo films still exist.

      My friend has a nearly mint 76 Bicentennial Sportster that he's had since the early 80's, around 90 I put the first top end on the engine and it's mostly sat since then, like you said no clear coat over the decals and a metallic flake in the paint.
      Pretty rare birds in this day and age, finding one that's original like that, I didn't know you could get repop decals for them, I'm surprised Harley is allowing that to happen.

      My Dad had the 76 but In brown sparkle paint with the
      stripes fading from yellow to orange. I remember being a young kid thru the 90's and my dad giving me and my little brother rides on it. It was so much fun! My dad ended up selling it in 96' and died in 97' less than a year. I still have very fond memories on that Harley. I believe he bought it in 88'. I remember being sad when he sold it . I realize now he knew he was dieing and had to get rid of it R. I. P Dad We love and miss ya!!

      exactly,the motor company was saved due to AMF, I remember all the bitching,heard it every day on the job most of the guys I worked with bought hogs,but as I remember it,all the trouble was over the brakes,my amf is staying,i've learned how to keep it running after 35 years,and it idles and sounds like a Harley,i don't like the exhaust note on the new ones,shovelheads sound completely different,must be those hemi heads huh?

    I think the AMF Harleys are the best looking of all bikes, even today. Although the Motor Company is still making good looking bikes, they could do with a line that mimics these classics more. It might even sell. lol
    What distinguishes these bikes are: Much narrower width and the tendency for the individual parts to stand out more. The Shovelhead and Ironhead motors looked and sounded great. They had a number of issues, though! lol

    I did a test drive in 1976 on a brand new Liberty edition FXE with a few hundred miles on it. Back then I hung out with some unsavory fellows in motorcycle gangs and this particular bike was stolen brand new from what they said off of a railroad box car. I don't remember the asking price but I do remember it was $1,000 to change the serial numbers. Of course I turned it down and told them I'll get in trouble by myself I don't need any help.

    Very cool, always loved the Liberty tanks. Great graphics during the AMF era. My daily ride is a 1982 FXB Sturgis. A lot of great models introduced during the AMF years. Anything on the Confederate bikes? I think they came out in 77.

    There was also the Confederate Edition line of bikes, but due to controversies over the flag and the CSA, Harley wanted nothing to do with it apart from a specimen or two in their archives.

    • @davidsnow2420
      @davidsnow2420 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Up until the early '90s Harley offered merchandise with Confederate flag imagery, and lots of dealerships in the south used the rebel flag in their logos. Unfortunately, Harley bowed to pressure from the PC crowd and forced dealerships to discontinue what they deemed negative imagery.

    I had a '77 iron head XLCH kick only the bike ran awsome in the summer but she was a real cunt in the winter practically broke my leg trying to start it. I ride a Honda now BIG difference in performance. Electric start is the way to go the bad thing about old Harley Davidson motorcycles is if the fucking thing is not tuned exactly correct your going to be kicking it over for a while.

      What matters these days : is the mechanic who rebuilds them a pos ?
      Been riding shovels for almost 40 years
      They're as reliable machines as long as you maintain them.
