Well done ID guy.. You have impeccable taste., and if I saw that watch across a room full of Rolex, and Nautilus, I would be pushing them over to get to the wearer of it. I may even tip my hat. I have a VC Royal Eagle which makes me feel the same way.
Definitely not a cookie cutter design. I am somewhat new to watches, and see that sameness running through the available watches. This watch re-ignited my interest. Thank you.
What a fantastic video on one of my favorite watches. You need to see this watch in person, pictures and videos do not do it justice! Thanks IDGuy for highlighting this very special watch.
A fellow Facebook group enthusiast just got one of the Anniversary editions...happy for him and jealous at the same time...lol. It’s a great piece...I absolutely fell in love with it in person.
Ah, you're a lucky man to have experienced it! A real OG Racing / Aviators piece from a bygone era. The quirks are right up our alley. And thank you as always for the comment, brother
The VC 1921 is a true ‘grail’ watch for myself. If only a budget version was brought out for a 10th of the price, I’d have one straight away! Another great video here my friend for the centenary of this beautiful timepiece. ✊
I fell in love with VC 21 the very first time I saw one, it’s such a beautiful piece. One day I will have one in my collection. Thanks for the video, ID Guy.
Before Watches and Wonders this year, this watch was in the Oort Cloud of my consciousness at best. And then I saw that gorgeous iteration in platinum and I started reading about the model and I listened to the Hodinkee radio piece that covered it. I guess you are right about people these days with the herd mentality driving their desire for the non quirky; the fear of not having "the right watch" to show off. I feel like Vacheron has been in this boat for a while, despite the success of the Overseas, it is obviously nowhere near 5711 and Royal Oak "status". Then you think of a brand like Gerard- Perregaux ...OK i'm beginning to ramble on here.... I have to say the thing that really perked my eyes today was the comparison the the Apple watch as far as design language! I don't think anyone else would have caught that. ( that's why we come here! )
Thank you for the in-depth comment Michael (you're never rambling) always great to know your perspective around these subjects. And this model is a gem, also will probably remain very underrated / under-appreciated but hey! Next week I've queued up a video on the new Hermes H08 which takes this "retro modern" concept in a bit of a different direction. It's amazing to see where these watches are going today (keeps us interested at least) ;)
Yeah well said. Not that I thought you were rambling at all, however there is something about the brand which is extremely difficult to vocalise. I'm a fan of the Overseas - it's my favourite of the big 3 integrated bracelet pieces, BUT the first iteration - the VC 222 - with those elements of the iron cross on the bezel + the offset iron cross logo lower right made it more... see I'm lost for words now and feel like I'm rambling! They are by far my favourite of the old world high horology brands, for that precise reason.
Holy mother of all that is good, I love this watch. It is just a weeeeee bit outside side my budget, but I appreciate the video and the chance to enjoy the watch from afar.
Love it when personal grail pieces are featured and given their due respect. The American 1921 is an absolute classic. Amazing case shape and lugs. I think VC does outstanding case & lugs. Great vid. I’ll be at the VC boutique picking up this Saturday 😍... I’ll send you a “lefty” wrist shot with it!
God-damn this watch is gorgeous, almost to the point of being beyond words. I too am flabbagasted that this timepiece doesn't sit somewhere towards the top of most, if not all grail lists. It's just so 'right'. The idea of an off-set dial appeals to me. Giugiaro did it well in the 80's and others, both before and after VC did it with some inherent clumsiness. But the manner in which the Historiques American achieves both subtlety and audacious beauty concurrently is... and this is where words fail me.
Well done ID guy. For me VC are in a class of their own when it comes to good taste. And you clearly have impeccable taste. If I saw that watch in a crowded room full of Rolex And Nautilus, I would be pushing them to the ground to get to this watch. I havea VC Royal Eagle for exactly the same reasons you have mentioned here. When I wear it I feel like a million dollars
Definitely one of my grail watches. It has all I want, elegance, authenticity, novelty and the right amount of peculiarity. I would even consider the to wear it on a good leather Nato strap to make it even more unique. But my budget I only big enough the Longines type a7.
I feel the same about it, brother. You've summed it up better than I could. It's definitely out of our budget too... BUT who knows! maybe we could spark a movement to bring it out in steel? The A7 is a gorgeous piece too... takes the quirks of this and multiplies them haha! Thank you for your comment (I'm glad someone else feels the same about it as I do)
The ONLY VC I'm interested in. It is beautiful with a depth of character missing in so many of is peers at the same price point or higher. VC will always struggle because it can't appeal to non WIS so won't be a 'must have'. I'm happy about this because it remains attainable & I think good value arguably 👍🏻
Great video IDGuy, I've always had a soft spot for the offset design, maybe one reason it's not been universally accepted for what it deserves to be is that this is clearly a left wrist watch. For sure I'm not a follower of fashion and often prefer function over form and this VC clearly has both in a balance rarely achieved by many. Thanks again.
Thank you Anthony! A seriously under-appreciated soul and it's the quirks that haven't made it universally loved, absolutely. Who knows, maybe the interest will soon shift in a direction similar to these pieces ;)
I have a pair of 1921s in white and pink gold. Got them both on a whim because I couldn’t decide which I liked more. I alternated them for a few weeks but stopped wearing them because winding the crown is a giant pain in the butt - it’s so close to the lugs so my fingers would keep rubbing against them. It’s an interesting watch but too annoying to use as a daily driver.
I wear watches on the right too... Funniest thing is that the originals were made for the right wrist (strangely) - I'd imagine we could make requests ;)
I think there is a lot in it being quirky not serving it well, especially at the price whereby almost everyone will have built up a collection and will have probably scratched that particular itch at some point already. I sold on my Oris Divers 65 as it was too much when i already own a Zodiac Super Seawolf in watermelon. I expect by the time you are looking at the VC as a serious option you will have an interesting Reverso, or a Ploprov or a Joker or something else that fills that quirky niche making it very hard to justify buying up again. And Seiko do loads of offset faces in the meantime!
Guess I am peculiar. I fell in lust for this watch from the first glance. Just as I have for the Longines Heritage Avigation with an offset single push chronograph in a style reminiscent of the Omega Lawrence of Arabia watch. Just as I have for the Hamilton Movie Regulator. Just as I have for the Daniel Roth Ellipsocurvex Papillon. Just as I have for the Romain Gauthier Logical One showing the constant force chain on the dial. I could go on. But you get the picture.
A beauty, for sure. I was interested to see at 2.00 and 6.10, it looked so well on a woman's wrist (as can Panerai). The 45. rotation gives the design tremendous energy and louche elegance. But for me, the masterstroke detail is the corner-mounted crown. The case, numerals, small second are not unique, but that corner crown elevates the design to the next level. But hey, put Breguet numerals, observatory/Breguet hands and a 3 o'clock small second on a watch and I'm gone. Solid gone.
Stunning but personally I never get dress watches. It's a topic in itself.... maybe omega aqua terra or a simple oyster rolex can be dress watches AND an every day watch, but I would never look at a patek or vacheron... very expensive, fragile, not water resistant..... maybe when I'm older I'll be drawn to them...but for now it's Omegas, g-shocks and Rolex
It's an acquired taste that I think we'll all get later in life. I'm in the same space as you when thinking about watches I'd want to wear on a daily basis. But then I know pretty young collectors who cannot go through a week without wearing an FP Journe at least three times. You'll be interested in the next watch I unveil on the channel in the coming weeks (quite left of field) ;) Thank you as always for the comment, brother! Running another Livestream on Saturday if you want to gatecrash - feels like it's going to be a long one
@@ID-Guy That was a great comparison. I think I would like the lugs more if they did not have the rivet on the bottom. I didn't expect to compliment the apple watch, but I love the smooth transition into the strap.
It's not desirable because EVERYONE (younger people) want the unobtanium Rolex Daytona, GMT, Submariner, AP Royal Oak, PP 5711. This is a beautiful watch, but it's not a only one, or first watch. This is suited more for a mature older gentlemen that already owns a few watches. It will not look good on a man under 40. It will look like his fathers watch that he took from the sock drawer. It can't be worn with jeans, flip flop sandals, t-shirts, or gym shoes. Plus it's expensive... grey market Rolex prices. Given the money in hand? Most people will not buy this before an opportunity to buy a steel sport Rolex/AP/Patek. Childish "Hype" watches are in.
This piece does epitomise "grail" too. I like that. Makes for the kind of watch that could truly cap off a collection. Interesting how we feel that these tiers are linked to age as we mature in this hobby. Crazy how deep it goes ;) Thank you for the comment, Milo!
@@ID-Guy Yes as we get older, and continue to grow and experience more to life. Men grow out of certain watches. Tastes change and evolve. I speak for myself. I'm 49 and I see most modern Rolex watches as childish immature accessories. With all due respect this is just how I feel for myself. Great timepieces but are more for a younger man. Plus the negative attention and a bad stigma that the brand carries. I don't need that in my life for the price that these watches retail for. It's no longer special to own a Rolex. The design of the Oystercase is very dated, classic but dated. I prefer something that's class, mature, timeless, and something that's can be a real heirloom for my children.
@@garyboyle695 Like I said it's all hype internet, online influenced, and only good for investment when it comes to a few brands. Don't get me wrong I love my Rolex Explorer 36mm. No one knows it's a Rolex and it's a tough everyday watch. However, I would prefer a Reverso, or this VC over most modern sport watches.

Deserves so much more love from the FP Journe collectors and others. Just a fascinating piece of design that has to be treasured. Thank you Arthur!
