Overall, can’t say kumon is completely useless since they do teach you how to become an independent learner and you gain more soft skills like learning how to solve problems very quick and short manner. That said, what I would say for sure about Kumon is that it really does destroys someones confidence, and mental health if they are unable to keep up with what they are learning.
Kumon Reading is the worst program I have ever attended too. I’ve been on the final level for 2 years. They always do those same type of questions where you have to “understand the story”, but when you compare the answers you put to the correct answers. It makes no fucking sense. For example, on page L 81B, it says to in your words, substantiate the interpretation below by referring to the text. Interpretation: Memories are contorted. HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO THAT WITH 3 WORDS? Most of the L reading packets give you questions where you have to write a paragraph. In the test, however, there’s no such question like that. They’re teaching you stuff that isn’t even on the test. That’s why I hate Kumon.

I recently finished level M in math (I'm on N now) and I'm in 9th grade... honestly I started to go on autopilot a little by that repetition, but once you get to like the middle of M you can't do that anymore and that's when the critical thinking starts to actually show up and it's kind of a wake up call. In elementary school I was super good at those timed sheets because of Kumon, then I had to move and stopped for a few years (4th-7th grade), and then I started again in 7th grade because I wanted that feeling of being fast and accurate. I can say that I'm disappointed that there isn't too much geometry there and when I went into geometry honors this year in school I had to self teach myself most of it. However, thanks to Kumon I actually did really well self-teaching myself most of the curriculum. Also, the moment you get to level I it's a whole new world of math and I almost failed the level test which I haven't ever done prior to I. That being said, I managed to fly through level D - K in the span of middle school (7th-8th grade) alone because of the work ethic I put in. If you are planning to put your kid into kumon, make sure they have the "want" to improve and the work ethic to do so. This video is very accurate, and I honestly highly recommend kumon if your kid is willing to work for it. If you have any questions about it feel free to reply to this comment :)
I asked my mom to put me in Kumon with 14 years (1st year of highschool) and here I'm, 17 years (last year of highschool or senior year or whatever how people call) on level N, it was hard work from 2A - M. But I don't regret it, maybe if Covid wasn't a thing I'd have finished it already.
PLEASE I NEED HELP how do I convince my parents to not go back to kumon I did it from gr 3 to 6 and now I'm going to 8 and they want to start again I can't do it please
Started when i was in kindergarten and still doing it (7th grade). I already completed the reading program but my mom forced me to do math. Currently on level I 😭💀 Edit: i'm halfway through j now
My honest honest opinion- Kumon only really works until level G, as they build up on fundamentals, but after that it is not worth it and you would have much for success investing in a tutor.
my teacher changed it to 3 pages. not much, i think i might be over exaggerating with what i get. but really whatever u get for how many pages, u basically still go through a lot of stress and frustration - i’m grade F. almost to G.
The thing is they don’t teach you, I went in grade 4-8 and I fucking hated it because at some point it got hard and I couldn’t just figure it out myself without constantly going up and asking for explanations
Kumon was torture for me I used to escape by turning in my work and disappearing and leaving , they figured that out after a while and made sure my work had no errors or I had to go back. I stayed there all night one time just to finish the damn math after having a breakdown. It was a horrible experience and I definitely learned nothing. I saw some kids finishing tons of stuff but I literally hated the whole experience. It was so horrible and eventually my mom didn’t make me go after going every single day.
I started Kumon before I started my elementary school, it was.. a decade ago. In my experience, it help me a lot in many ways but in other way it tortured me indirectly. My Kumon's teachers was good and kind and my parents doesn't forced me, it just when you can't understand the sheets and your ego start crying inside or smth like that. Tbh, I really glad I finished it before got to highschool, but I kinda miss the feeling. Especially now when I had an urges to understand complex math like calculus and more. In summary, Kumon is not for everyone (consider financially and mentally). You need a will to improve and not being forced so u can work for it. (Sorry for bad English)
My childhood: Kumon ruined everything. So I went to kumon for about 3 years and since 6th grade I’ve been learning like high school or college math and I think that forcing children to do kumon homework everyday isn’t the way to teach. I remember I was so stressed that I completely destroyed one of my kumon because I already have enough problems. I hope some people feel my pain.
Same for me. Its 24/7 stress. When I tell my parents I want to quit, they say YoUr JuSt goNNa PLay aLl DAy. I just to have a stress free day. I also want to pursue my love for chess. But im sure my parents will say its useless. Well let me just die here slowly.
Few days ago I started to work in a Kumon school . And I'm really struggling because I'm used to another kind of classroom , at times I feel like I'm doing nothing OMG 😂 ! I like the way the kids come and go and that's it. I don't like maths and I'm making math , along with English, all those numbers running through my brain OMG 😅 they offered me middle scholarship for my son , I'm still thinking if I want his first contact with EFL would be the through Kumon! As a teacher I love songs and role plays in my classroom and I really like kids repeating aloud!!! Math with Kumon for sure , my kid already loves math and he really gets distracted easily , so he needs more discipline and concentration! above all the videos that I already watched about Kumon this was the level GOD in explanation , I really love te way you exemplified everything and your philosophy about kids' new way of thinking ! 👏👏👏
Exactly they are like “hold your pencil properly” like MiSS GWURL this is how I have been holding my pencil for my entire life and you want to change that? But luckily I still write the way I do now, kumon will never change my way of thinking, I quit kumon because I came crying to my parents and they felt bad so I’m don’t doing it anymore, I hope you can stop doing kumon soon
This is the first time I’ve heard of Kumon. I feel like repetition and memorization isn’t a good way to teach children. It’s probably the fastest and most streamlined way, but it’s not the most efficient way. Education should not be factorized, but I understand that with the amount of children out there, it’s practically impossible to sit down with each one of them and give them the education they deserve. However, in a perfect world, we should be covering each concept in depth rather than just telling them it over and over again. Memorization is a part of the learning process, but it isn’t the whole process.
as human beings we only use 10% of our brains, do you really think we need to learn 20 ways to do math?! Some kids are dumper than others and some just choose not to use their brains because they are lazy. When you have too many choices, at the end you're confused. It even applies to business, focus on one thing to be good at and put your energy on that and you will be more likely to be successful. In an adult working environment, the most effective way to advance is to have accuracy, efficiency and be able to think out of the box. Learning "20" different ways would be "fun" and a waste of money that most children don't have and parents are sacrificing their hard earned money to give something to their children to somehow secure their future.
Student here, I'm not in Kumon though. But I really do think that the school system is based on memorization and application. That's the game; you memorize it, do the test, pass the test, and eventually you forget about it. If Kumon is teaching us to memorize then I don't see the issue.
@@rxses2111 while it is true that in most cases the school system is like that, most of us would agree on the fact that it shouldn't be like that. Education has a purpose at the end of the day, and that is to educate. Passing exams doesn't imply learning, and therefore, just like you said, you forget everything then. Therefore Kumon is just useful if you don't care about learning and just wanna pass exams. Besides that, pure maths student here. What Kumon teaches is nothing but what anybody who studies math hates about it: repetition. We study it because it's everything but dull
Hi i am a kumon student and i do reading and im level D2 and when i read the story and started to answer and the passage is asking what happened to the story something like and it's not helpful when i started answering i look at the story again to find the answer and when i look at it there's nothing that the passage is questioning. And my 2th problem is when i do the kumon i always get feel dizzy because the question iss hardd and kinda destroying my brain. So guys that's all Don't let your kids go to kumon If they already did Never go back And do you know how the teacher know the answer? They know it because they use a book to look for an answer And the teachers are the one who need to study kumon
I personally don't believe in doing any of these extra after school work. You can still be very successful later on without these extra after school work. Your children's youth is only there once in their life, and you should let them be kids while they still can because the process of adulting later in life is very shitty and depressing. This is speaking from my own personal experience who went through these when I was a kid. When you're young, you want to be older as soon as possible. When you're finally older, you realize the times when you were a kid were the best because those were the times that you didn't have to worry about paying bills, filing your taxes, being a dad or mom, dealing with shitty people at work and all these other responsibilities. I'm talking about times when we were kids and the only thing we looked forward to was just coming home and playing old school Maplestory or Pokemon or some kind. Heck, or just play marble ball in the dirt. I'm just talking about anything that's not some bs school tutor related for extra activities that lead to kids being traumatized. Let your kids be kids and enjoy their youth while they still can, because later on they won't have those times to enjoy their youth after they start working and become an adult. As long as they're doing well in school, stop interfering with their own life and making decisions for them. That's just very selfish way of projecting your own ideals onto someone else because you personally think what's best for another person. Parents need to realize to stop projecting their own ideal life onto their children because they're not you, and most likely they aren't interested in the same thing as you either. What parents should be doing is giving their children the options to explore different things in life and guide them towards a direction that the kids want to pursue a career in. Parents are supposed to be there to support them and guide them, not control and dictate what they should or shouldn't do. Obviously, I'm not talking about just let them do drugs and end up killing people, but you get the point because I'm just talking about let them explore different subjects and they'll realize what themselves are gravitated more toward to. I seen a lot of people where their Asian parents fall into this stereotypes of wanting their kids to be either a doctor or lawyer, but their kids grew up traumatized with just socializing issues with other people later in adulthood because they don't want to disappoint their parents. But in reality, they hate being a doctor or lawyer. A lot of them want to do something else instead because they're not happy since they just did it to make their parents happy. They're going to eventually realize this isn't the life they want to live for themselves in the long term. It's kind of similar to realizing you're in a toxic relationship with a person, but in the beginning you don't realize it. Later on, you'll eventually realize this relationship is toxic and you deserve to be happy just like everyone else too. Please remember that ultimately they are the ones that are living in their own life, not you. So it doesn't make sense for you to tell them what they should or shouldn't do because you're not the ones that living their life.
So when i was in kumon i legit picked someone else's correction paper bc i had a lot and they were looking for it but i was too embarrassed to give it back so i just kept it🤭
It sucks parents ruin their kids childhood by making them go after school, weekends, holidays, vacations, etc. They don't let their kids go outside make friends and just hangout. Like they freak out over Bs in school and just make them do kumon
I personally disagree that giving your child affection is being a bad parent. This is showing your kid that you will only love them and give affection if tney do this or that which is really toxic and not love. What you should be doing is communicating with your child and working out problems together. Definitely please please do not only show affection when they meet your terms. It will ruin your relationship with them and make them constantly fear you and seek approval.
The cold, hard truth of kumon: get tortured by stupid problems, not to learn english and math, but to become an independent and selfish robot without emotions.
I’m currently in kumon, and I do have to say when I was in 6th grade it did help me a bit with my skills. After that though, everything went wrong, and I’ve been stressed out. I was never the best at math but I learned how to understand better at school and now my average is 99, without kumons help cause I don’t even do their hw. Corona kind of saved my life but now i have to join dumb zoom meetings since the instructor called my parents to make me join them. I’m at the very end of lvl H, but don’t even give a damn about this stupid progam. wtf do i do
My parents did not simply love me, but they did not discipline me either. I was disciplined by myself. I feared my parents and grew to hate them. They never cared about me and that was what got in the way of my success the most. The techniques that really matter are much harder to know and master than repetition. Also, there are enough people to teach children individually, just as there are enough people to produce their own food instead of shipping it, but society is discouraged from this behavior because it is all about being certified and scientific these days. But even scientists are not providing answers on basic questions about the world needed to advance culture in ways that we used to possess some common mastery in. Yes, the repetition is good for mastering things, as I have found in playing fighting games competitive and seriously, but you need comfort and to see the necessity of your actions before that is truly the best step to take.
I’ve never done kumon thank god. But I’ve done something called “Northshore” it is basically 3 hours after school on Thursday. It was HELL!! I had to do Math, Science and English and I wanted to die!!! Thank God it was only for 2 years but all I can say is that it didn’t help ONE BIT.
DAMN IKR WHEN I WAS KINDER THEY GOT MAD AT ME FOR COUNTING MY FINGERS,And now they keep giving out papers saying its ok to count your fingers so you can answer faster🙄😒
My dad told me that Kumon will not help me get better you just need to memorize your lessons in class…i was like “then why even sign me up i can just memorize” like i have good memory i can learn a whole lesson in 30 minutes or less lol. I even had a 14.95 on math whats the point of signing me up?!?!
I'm failing geometry and my parents think it's my fault. I asked them to quit kumon because it was too much work and a waste of time. Its dumb cause I can't skip to geometry level.
I think the method is just a tool. It can be good for some people and horrible for others. Reading the comments, I think it's horrible to be forced by the parents to do a method you don't enjoy. I by other hand had a good experience with Kumon. I don't have TDHD but as you keep doing the school math process gets easier. You start in you own level and own rhythm. The exercises are always easy for your level so you always know how to do and do the next problem. So it makes we feel that we are dominating the content. It can give you confidence and make you like to do homework. With time you end up memorizing everything. You become a human calculator so, when you solve a problem the calculations become very easy and you save time and energy. But I started at the age of 14. Maybe it's not good for kids but if you are a teenager it can be very helpful. But depending of your age you can pass your school level. I've never been able to pass my school level, but I always thought that could be horrible. Cause then you will deal with a content that there's nobody to teach. But if you are in a level that you already know it can be wonderful. I think the hardest part for the kids today is that this generation needs to do things with purpose and it has to be functional. Nobody today wants to get in college or PHD because of tradition. Some will like for the title, but kids nowadays are multi-potential and they share interest in several things and do different projects in several different fields of study. But I live in Brazil. So maybe is different. Our culture do not have this cultural pressure on "success" like the USA culture has, for example. And when I had complications understanding the exercises sometimes and the "tutors" always were very helpful.
same for me kinda, yknow like i wanna do something im interested, example, biology, marine biology, i need to learn measurements, geometry blah blah, but im learning something way different than that.
I'm currently doing I, and the reason people hate it is because Kumon give one simple example and barely any working/solution to back their teaching up. Sure, you could ask someone for help with it, but then Kumon scold you for using the wrong method and if you ask Kumon for help, they just ask you to do it and then give you the correct answer. It's more like having to use logic than learning
Guys if you want to stop KUMON just literally stop doing it, no matter what your parents tell you just stop doing it all together. Trust me it works Edit: IT WORKED!
My mom just complains we don't have money for 3bedroom house but it os because we spend over 100 dollars on this kumon shit i don't need just cause i got a C and it was because i didnt do my work i understood my school work
Kumon definitely does help you in many ways (math more than reading) but the instructions can be very hard to understand sometimes, making some packets extremely hard
While the math is horrible enough, the fact that they give 2 HOURS of homework EVERYDAY is not only depressing, but gives us unwanted and unnecessary work, as if school didn't give enough. It wastes money and time. The reading work is rather fine, but the math homework is what gets me. 1 packet of 6th grade level math takes almost an HOUR to complete. And they give this every day. Every week. It puts kids in a depression state, where the teachers are too mean or uncaring to understand. They show no shame for anything. Kumon is garbage.
Kumon is the worst because if I have 20 sums on a page and I make 1 mistake on each page then I fail with a 95% but if I get a b lets say a b is 4-7 mistakes and I make 3 pages with 7 mistakes then that is Twenty one mistakes and that is a 79% and that is a pass and I get it on holiday and the point of holiday is to relax and no work and my mom says I can quit when my brother quit and she says it is unfair to him but he quit a year ago I have been doing this for 6 years and I still have another 2 years help me.
my parents out me in kumon when i was about 2-3ish and took me out after i begged for 2 years to be taken out when i was 11. the place was misery for me
ive been there for 8 years im 11 and im on level f -_- kumon is nutin compared to my work at school and it just ruins meh life but finally my parents let me quit :D
Does Kumon help with schoolwork, too? My niece is struggling and is not doing well in math right now. She used to get solid A's in math, but now she is a solid C student. I want her to get more math in, but I believe she is in the danger zone with what she is supposed to be able to be in the 8th grade now. Should there be a tutor and something like Kumon?
Give them exercise, discipline, THEN affection. Just like training a dog huh. I feel deeply sad for you or anyone who has to go through such upbringing.
If im being honest Kumon really helped me in primary, it helped score through my grades but for cons literally is the pain and suffering you feel if you did Kumon didn't have one mental breakdown your will power is beyond that of a regular human being and Also Kumon's teaching system is... without a teacher or a pog sister I feel bad literally once you learn a whole new topic it'll just turn into fractions, top that off with the homework you get everyday

All kumon really did for me was tell me how to hold a pencil properly. Everything else was mental breakdowns and holding me back with easy questions

@@marisolwendland3149 the 10% of brain usage is a myth btw
@@rxses2111 while it is true that in most cases the school system is like that, most of us would agree on the fact that it shouldn't be like that. Education has a purpose at the end of the day, and that is to educate. Passing exams doesn't imply learning, and therefore, just like you said, you forget everything then. Therefore Kumon is just useful if you don't care about learning and just wanna pass exams.
Besides that, pure maths student here. What Kumon teaches is nothing but what anybody who studies math hates about it: repetition. We study it because it's everything but dull

MY PARENTS ARE PUTTING ME INTO KUMON WHYY
I wish my parents cared enough about me to even think about doing that. Take good care of your time there.
Thanks God that I watched this video , so I just found out that KUMON it’s not what I want 4 my daughter.

I try to explain to them I get 50 packets of homework so it makes it hard for me to balance my school work and the dumb homework everyday.
The face on the logo says it all.

This is a great explanation!
