homemade surface drive upgrade

I have always wondered what the advantage these have. The lower unit is just a regular lower unit so it wouldn't float in higher in the water. I am guessing the main advantage would be lawn mower engines are easy to find. For the same horsepower wouldn't it weigh quite a bit more. Don't get me wrong I am all into anything that can be Frankensteined I wouldn't hesitate to build one myself as long as I thought there was going to be some advantage to doing it this way. Thank you
