  • The Scottish Western Isles of the Outer Hebrides are a chain of inter-connected islands, each possessing their own unique character and way of life. The landscapes of these islands vary wildly; from boulder-strewn mountains, shell-sand beaches, flower-covered machair, countless lochs and lochans, vast watery peat bogs, to monuments built by long-forgotten civilizations. The local communities are warm and welcoming - a defining trait of Gaelic island culture.
    Filmed over five weeks in the Summer of 2019, this film showcases some of the most dramatic environments and landmarks of the islands. Fourteen Hebridean islands are featured here; Vatersay, Barra, Eriskay, South Uist, North Uist, Benbecula, Baleshare, Grimsay, Berneray, Vallay, Lewis, Harris, Scalpay and Great Bernera.

    Technical Stuff
    The climate of the Outer Hebrides can be very changeable which makes filming with a drone quite challenging. More so than normal photography. I was also mostly wild camping, which meant I had no way of regularly recharging batteries. I had to pick and choose my shots with care and make the best of the conditions available to me.
    The most challenging shots were those of the Callanish standing stones. The site is usually busy with tourists during the day, and I wanted to get shots of the stones, not people! After a week of less than perfect conditions, the rain and cloudy conditions gave way to blue skies and I finally got the early morning shot I wanted. Strangely, the shots which required me to climb a mountain were much simpler.
    Some shots are less than perfect as weather and lighting conditions are always in flux. Thankfully, I quite enjoy the post-production process.
    The hyperlapse footage was the most time consuming to correct. Ideally you want very still conditions in order to get the most "fluid" motion. This is impossible when filming on islands where there is almost always a constant breeze. I used Adobe After Effects to stabilise all the hyperlapse segments (mostly frame-by-frame), as well as some of the other footage. It is far from perfect, but I am happy enough with the results.
    Colour correction and grading is an area I have been trying to perfect. I like to try and keep my colours looking as natural as possible but given the limitations (lighting conditions, the hardware, poorly configured settings...) I have had to do some extensive colour correction. For the most part the colours are real, with a slight boost to contrast and saturation.

      Thank you! It is indeed beautiful. I had the privilage of sailing through the Sound of Harris the other day. It was great to see so many of these places from a different angle!

    That's a really amazing video, perfectly matched music, very moving! As for me, an example of how a drone video should look like.

    Beautiful short film introducing me to the Outer Hebrides! I'm hoping to cycle and open water swim there next year - and I can show off where I'm headed with this well crafted film. Thanks!

    Loved this! Especially the wee Cal-Mac coming in with hyperlapse - that bit made me chuckle. I'd love to see the feature for this trailer - not many drone movies you could say that about! Used to spend some summers on Lewis as a boy. Beautiful places.

    Did you go out to any of the Bishop Isles at all from Barra? It's worth a trip. Francis the boatman in Castlebay runs day trips. The sea cliffs and bird life are absolutely immense.

      I pretty much stuck to the inhabited islands, with the exception of Vallay. I do want to visit some of the smaller islands. Some of them have amazing history.
      St Kilda though. That's the next biggy. No drone though :(

    This is incredible!! For the non-hyperlapse shots, did you use waypoints most time or fly manual? Thanks for the inspiration dude!

    • @graemeforrest
      @graemeforrest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ryan! I pretty much always use waypoints for hyperlapses. I can't think of a situation where I'd fly manually for one. Waypoints are just so much more accurate, repeatable and tweakable. Some of those hyperlapses took like, 30 minutes to shoot. There's no way my chubby fingers can hold a smooth course for that length of time :D

    I had plans to use my DJI Mini Mavik 3 to shoot the Callanish Standing Stones near the summer solstice in 2023. I was going by the book and had plans to apply for UK flying license and was told I had to prove I had 5 million pounds liability insurance by the organization overseeing the complex. I thought that was ridiculous as my Mini Mavik was so fragile, it would be demolished berfore adding a scratch to the rocks plus it has collision avoidance anyway. My Scottish guide mentioned that on the whole, Scots hate drones and if they have a gun, they will shoot it down. Even though it was 4am, there were three people hanging around so could not not rightfully fly over them.( US rules). In the end, I decided to leave my drone home.
    You lucked out.

    • @graemeforrest
      @graemeforrest  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The insurance I have covers up to 5m, and it costs about £100/year. That might be a bit much for someone here on holiday, but it's very reasonable for someone who flies regularly.
      I think I managed to get my footage just before drones became cheeper, and a lot more accessible. But it's true that some people have a problem with drones, especially around the big landmarks. I'd say it's more of a privacy thing.
      I very much doubt anyone would shoot a drone out of the sky here! There's so few guns in the first place, and anyone who's taken the time to jump through the hoops of gun ownership will know it's a serious criminal offence to discharge a firearm at an aircraft.

    • @roberthigaki2282
      @roberthigaki2282 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My plan was to use the drone only one time, so the insurance was not cost effective. My guide who hails from Edinburgh served in the military so it may explain his more aggressive tone on shooting drones down.
      Thanks for responding.

    3. Nice job! If you have a few minutes to spare you should consider uploading your video to the AirVuz drone video sharing site - it’s the world’s largest site specifically for drone videos. We have a curated collection of drone videos from Scotland and we would love to be able to feature this video in the collection if you wouldn’t mind uploading it. If you have any trouble finding it or can’t find the URL for the site just let me know via reply. Cheers!
