- Ford about ten years ago came out with the Focus and Fiesta ST and created an entire new hot hatch rivalry in the United States. However with those vehicles gone, Ford built the Explorer ST - a jack of all trades family SUV that just so happened to be the fastest vehicle ever in the ST lineup. With a built transmission, a tune by ZFG, and big turbos - this is one crazy grocery getter. So is this a great alternative to a Jeep Trackhawk and Durango SRT? Let's talk about it.

What fast SUV would you take?
After riding in George’s ST explorer ST I got hook, hands down it’s what I am picking.

Just stay away from the rust belt because there's a reason you don't see older ford SUV's up north when they sold like a billion explorer's in the late 90s early 00's. Although I think it's just a Ford problem with all the cars they sell.
Lmfao when I was 18 years old, I told everyone I wanted one they all laughed at me couple months later I bought one and now it is FBO tune with 500whp and I smoke all my friends

Wheel HP!?!? Prove it - where is this 700wheel hp st located? Where did you get this #? What kind of dyno was used - what stage injectors and pump? What turbos you running? Anyone can claim big HP - I just wanna see the pull in a video -
Not on the hi way they just move out of my way. Just did a tune only and got 100 extra Hp. On mine now, I want more intercooler and exhaust next, lol.

Another sleeper ford is the 2007 ford freestar 4.2 either awd but the fwd is faster was faster than my buddies firebird and his 3v mustang and could keep up with his tuned audi a4 till bout 120 then he ran outta my life 😆 but dang van would do 113mph in the quarter at 13.58 not bad for being stock

I did when I was one as well. I could not believe what a gem it was. They handle really well from factory.
Other than their god awful plastic oil pans that are just waiting to leake
I own a 21. It's been the most fun family car I've ever driven. This thing is amazing at road trips and jaw dropping mustang owners. It will massage your butt with adaptive cruise control and lane centering going at 100mph. Best sub 100k family car, period.
And even better looking than any Mustang!

Agreed. I drive a 2019 Platinum F-150. As nice as my pickup is, I still envy my wife’s 21 ST. I go from six to midnight every time we are about to road trip.
Yeah I'm a mustang owner and I got totally surprised when an ST took a run at me and I could not pull away ...That's why I'm getting rid of my wife's Genesis G70 and getting an ST
Our final two were between the 2021 explorer ST and the 2021 Hyundai palisade, both with all options. At the time the palisade was five grand less and offered better technology on the interior. I really wanted the ST, but no heads up display on a 55K car? Sometimes I think about the extra hundred horsepower I could have had.
Explorer st are literally the most sleeper suv out there. Just a tune and they rip

Durango Hellcat, both look like cop vehicles but the Durango can put down more power.

I used to be a ford tech and in class the teacher said ford engineers squeezed out 700hp out of the 3.5 before the turbos blew, that was in 2011 lol crazy to see them pushing these numbers on stock block reliably
700 hp is NOT reliable in that setup
I would of thought because it's factory turboed, it would have forged internals
3.5 has always been potent

@@superstallion97 No forged internals but the block is pretty stout. The only problems that have surfaced is maybe bearings from oil starvation because of a launch with low oil.

The Explorer ST is sick. It looks mad aggressive, and of course the Ecoboost motor is one of the best motors Ford made.

Damn, making me question my 17 X5M purchase from December. I wouldn’t go full blown new turbos and all for 700 whp but the idea of a newer vehicle with easy bolt ons, a tune, and cheaper maintenance sounds like a dream 😂
Yes i was between and older like 2016-2017 X5M and Mercedes GLE 63 AMG or a 2020-2022 Explprer ST im glad i went with the explorer got Downpipes l, Exhaust, Intake, Tune, and few small thing and i love it.
No trust me. Your X5M is way better! I promise. You did NOT make a bad decision. I love these little Explorer ST's but high hp is not their MO.
X5 will touch 700 with just a tune. Literally the reason the St gets clowned on by all the fast suv guys.

Almost 2 years ago i was deciding between a 2016-17 BMW X5M and Mercedes GLE 63AMG and at the end i decided to go with a 2020 ST love the decision

I was a ford technician and I wanted to say that the stock transmissions shift equally as aggressive. It feels like a DCT from factory.

I just love the ford explorer st. They are just a beautiful looking suv with alot of hp. And so much more when you tune it up . Ford did good with it. Ill be getting one in the future for sure. My dream suv.
Long time Chevy guy. 03 Silverado 6.0 swapped and Nitrouse, then 07 TBSS cammed and full bolt on. Both daily drivers. Took a few years off from burnout and financial strain. In 16 ai was in the market for a truck and researched "fast" production trucks and came across the EBs. Got a steal on a 2.7 and tuned it at 8k miles and full bolt on and Stage 3 turbos around 14k miles. I just traded it in at 131k miles and had zero issues. Obviously i beat on it.. thats the whole point. Picked up a F250 6.7HO but talked my wife into a 25 ST. Yeah its on she just doesnt know. Great setups!
Just bought one a week ago and it’s my favorite vehicle to date. Can’t wait to out a tune and a whipple intercooler on it

This thing on a set of 19 inch VOLK ZE40’s and 50 side wall sticky tires, Mach 1 mustang brembos brakes, good set of coilovers, beefy rear sway bar and a open dump wastegate would be so killer.
There’s a whole crew of explorer ST guys here in KC. They’ve always made me want one
A did upgraded turbos, injectors and fuel pump on an ST this month at my shop and was taken for a ride with the owner/tuner afterwards and it was wild. Fastest thing I’ve ever been in. We had the car back to owner next day.

I have a 2004 eddie bauer edition explorer. 300,000 miles 20 years old runs like a champ. Has minimal rust love that thing😂

No drone, almost cant even hear the system while your talking, only when you down shift or gas on it can you really hear the pipes open up. That's a Thermal R&D Exhaust, Great video guys!
Thermal is definitely the best option for the ST!
The fun part is getting in the fast lane on the freeway and watch everyone get out of the way…might as well put the brush guard on…seriously wicked build.

Love these big suv setups! Pretty sweet you can build a "Mom-mobile" or "Dad-mobile" to be as fun as a street/track/drag monster while still being able to tow or haul kids in car seats.
I had a 20 ST for about a year, amazing SUV's.

I love the ST models. Stay away from the “ST Line” as that’s more of just a trim package without the bigger high performance motor. I’ve had the Ford Edge ST and the fusion sport both with the 2.7l tt ecoboost and they scoot. Now I just cruise in my new f150 3.5l ecoboost. Big ford fan since my father converted me. Was a Chevy guy

Great video, I'm working on the little brother Edge ST. With bolt-ons, I should get to about 500-525 HP. Now that is the biggest sleeper. The best part of my 2020 with 50K miles on I just picked up a window stickered for over $50K and I bought it for under $25K ..I think that would be a great follow up video ...
The edge st is slow af. Edge sport is much faster due to the better transmission. 500-525 MAYBE at the engine with bolt-on's and turbo's

So i have a 22 ST. I have the Cold air and the intercooler. Rear Diff brace. It is a very fun SUV to drive. I need to get the ZFG tune. I dunno if i want to go any higher then that. Yes the Fuel pump and the upgraded turbos and injuecters would be cool. But then i have to rebuild the trans on it to handle the power. a 60K SUV goes into the 80K+ Not sure if i want that. I think the mods I have with a ZFG tune will do me just fine. TBD

I met the guy here in Florida who got the first dyno tune on a 2020 explorer ST. I've always wamted one even more since I saw his.
Sounds like a cool sleeper and a good daily driver still. I know I loved. I had a 2014 Ford escape all-wheel drive with the 2 l and you could actually fit a lot of the parts from the focus ST on it and I was able to put a lot of their bolt-ons on mine and get it tuned and it was super fun and I never got it to a track but I'm pretty sure I was ripping about 14 second quarter miles in it and that felt crazy, fast and fun and it was still super practical

Im considering modifying my 3.5tt 17' Ford Explorer Platinum when I get back to the U.S., Its a bit of a downgrade from the 10spd in the newer explorers but its a 3.5l so ill have to see what happens. Its just really cool to see what I might be able to get close to.
Also, stock the ST twin turbos are pretty small and its still a very quick SUV stock.
I saw the ad when they were going ro be released. I already knew that truck is going to break hearts and wallets.lol
B8 Audi SQ5s are a lot of fun too. A tune and bolt ons will run with trackhawks
The last generation of the Lincoln MKZ had this drivetrain as an option, super underrated platform.
We own a 2020. Just ordered a 2025 and will be here in August. Nothing about them to dislike

Quite the subtle but rapid sleeper...I noticed it didn't have the red brake calipers, so therefore it doesn't have the factory optional brake upgrade package. An even better sleeper would be these upgrades done to a Lincoln Aviator !!
I just installed the jb4 tuner on my edge st..im blown away these eco boost motors are no joke
We have a 2022 that’s stock and it’s more fun than my 22 GT was. The awd is great. We have the bigger brake package (basically police brakes) much better
I think these little Explorers are awesome like this but I’m still taking the TrackHawk even tho I’m a Mustang guy!
I never got why Ford USA did not release the latest gen ST of the Fiesta and Focus.
Living in Belgium, I had the Fiesta ST200, it was a 3door (not so)limited edition for the final year of that generation.
It was a modified 1.6L 4cyl. ecoboostengine wint 215BHP in overboost. and a shorter second gear.
Though 0-60 was only slightly better. The powerband was much wider.
I traded it in last year for a EUDM MK8.5 Fiesta ST 5 door in Mean Green.
1.5L 3cyl with 200BHP and 320Nm. Much more tech, LSD, 4 driving modes, launch control, etc..
And yes, despite smaller engine size and 1 less cylinder, it's quicker.
It would have been perfect for the US market, especially for those who would want something sporty like a GR86 or BRZ, but need 2 extra doors for the practicality.
We have a '15 Explorer Sport. They have the 3.5l ecoboost and AWD. I believe they share the same chassis as the Taurus Sho
But the newer ST has the engine in the right way with the trans going to the back wheels first. Not a transverse mounted one like yours. They handle really good especially with the sport pack. With The Pzeros. Like mine.

You need to try a stock or stockish ST. You’ll still be surprised, I was beating some coyotes in mine with just an intake.

Im so excited, i just bought a ranger raptor. Same engine and transmission. Once they break the new ECU my RR will do this same thing but QUICKER as its significantly lighter. "And better looking".
Isn't the RR almost 5500 lbs? Is it really that much lighter?
5300. Didnt know that till after I got it home. Its 1100 lbs heavier than the standard base model ranger due to the extreme frame reinforcement and suspension. But is still 400 lbs lighter than the bronco raptor. So I guess the ST is a lightweight. But you wont be doing any high speed woops, or big 60ft jumps with the ST.
Got 30,000 miles on my bone stock 2021 Explorer ST…….ITS ALL YOU NEED BRO! Ohhhh mine is all black too and it even has massage seats
I have a black 2020 ST, fully loaded with the Street Package. I have a Livernois Stage 4 93 Octane tune on it, and that tune woke up this platform tremendously! I have 26,000 miles on it, and it's been tuned from day one with ZERO issues. Bone stock feels sluggish compared to the tune. But its still a fast SUV. I'm looking into upgrading my turbo's and adding a Steeda front sway bar. I already have it lowered on Steeda springs with rear adjustable sway bar, custom stainless steel cat back exhaust on 24" Forgiato 3-pc. wheels.

In My humble opinion, I think the Ford Explorer is overlooked because it's a 6 cylinder! I do like them, but I opted for the V8 Durango R/T when I made MY purchase!

This is the 3.5L, 3.0L and the 2.7L Ecoboost which that 3.0L is based on. They wake UP when you tune them and are incredibly strong motors.
The Explorer ST is probably the best bang for your buck American performance SUV but it doesn’t have the potential of a Trackhawk or Hellcat Durango

Ford should definitely have been made a High Performance trim of the Ford Explorer, like there’s so many options that can be used. They could make a Ford Shelby-Esque trim that has a lot of horsepower, maybe even a Raptor edition or something similar with a Supercharged V8 to compete with other High tier SUVs like the Escalade V, or maybe a Hellcat Durango or Trackhawk.
Obviously I love the ST Explorers, but I'd love to see you do a review of a Modded Kona N, it kills me that they only made them for 2 years and quickly replaced them with the N-Line models which are trash, but I for some odd reason love those little rippers.

The EcoBoost line of engines is massive. Below the 2.3 there's the 2.0 which was in the mid trims and ST Versions of the Focus, Fiesta and mid and upper trims of the Fusion and now the Escape and Bronco Sport. And even a 1.0 and 1.5 Turbo 3 Cylinders. The 1.5 eventually replacing the 1.0 and replaced the base non-turbo inline 4 in the Escape and Bronco Sport. and between the 2.3 and 3.0 there's the 2.7 V6 that is the base engine in the F150. There's pretty much an EcoBoost for everyone. I just wish Ford would give the EcoBoost treatment to the 5.0 V8.
Fiesta has the 1.6L, not a 2.0L
Let's also mention the Fusion Sport with the 2.7 and the Edge Sport with the 2.7. Can't forget those either if anyone knew about them
@@surrealinabox5220 I had a 2017 Fusion Sport. No lie, I beat a Porsche Panamera and a BMW X5 with my Fusion. Dude in the X5 pulled up next to me on the shoulder, while at a light to ask me what mods I did to the Fusion. I told him it was stock. He was also informed that it had a twin turbo V6. He thought it was a four banger!
If you order it with the performance pack it comes with brembos. You can tell this one doesn’t have it because the brembo calipers are red
