  • The latest Steam Deck update has arrived, and with it some exciting new features - including the ability to set the refresh rate between 40Hz and 60Hz while in-game and variable rate shading support. Alex goes hands-on to test out these new features work, and how a new fan profile has affected the Steam Deck's thermals, noise and performance in version 3.2.

    It's odd that they called it Variable Rate Shading in the settings menu when it's not "variable-rate" at all. Half Rate sounds like it does 1 shade per 2 fragments, but from the video it looks like 1 shade per 4 fragments (2x2, so 50% on each axis; quarter rate shading).
    Although perhaps it isn't working properly for deferred shaded games? If it's global half-rate shading then the deferred resolve itself would be at half-rate and you'd probably lose all that crisp geometry that this technique is supposed to preserve.
    It might be worth checking out how it looks on a forward rendered game that has high-contrast, sharp geometry, and seeing if it looks nicer in that situation.

    You can really cutdown on the noise of the fan, by simply stacking some strips of electrical tape inside the case, under where the steam logo is on the back. This applies pressure to the fan and reduces the high pitch noise. This does not affect thermals and is easy to do yourself. Valve are looking into doing something like this for all Steam Decks in the future.

    • @ctrlectrld
      @ctrlectrld 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Do you just cap the fps with something like RTSS, or use adaptive sync at half refresh rate? I've been playing at 50 fps vsync locked at 50hz on my laptop to keep temps and power budget down, while still having a butter smooth framerate. I have tried 30fps vsync locked at 30hz on a TV but it is not smooth at all. Unfortunately all my monitors can't go lower than 50hz so this 37fps locked on 75hz looks quite appealing to me if sufficiently smooth.

    • @ctrlectrld
      @ctrlectrld 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Going to write down here in case other people read this whole thing and are interested. In the end I tried it myself and it's ok! Clearly better than 30hz, it does not have that choppiness, still not the smoothest when the game is super fast paced, but it also depends on the vsync. I am finding out that nvidia vsync is trash, driver 512.15, it's always on the edge of tearing. Anyway, with some in-game motion blur it should be totally fine. To achieve the smoothest 37fps on a 75hz refresh rate, nvidia gpu, I've set adaptive sync at half refresh rate, and then with nvidia inspector I changed the tearing control from adaptive back to standard. Games like Microsoft Flight Simulator are going to be butter smooth at this framerate.

    Refresh rate selection might be a game changer considering that different levels in certain games have very variable performance. For example metro exodus in the forest level a little late in the game has immensely more gpu load than any other level in that game. Cap it to 30 in a level that is demanding then change it to 40 when out of it. You will need to know which areas are demanding tho...

  • @rodylermglez
    @rodylermglez 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's a shame that the screen isn't variable refresh rate capable, since that would completely fix the jitter issue (but arguably consume the most battery). However it's really a nice consolation price that you are no longer stuck in 60hz land. For the European friends, 50hz matches the old PAL refresh rate, for which their eyes will no doubt get a surprisingly nostalgic blast from the past. For those who visit the cinemas often, 48hz is the frequency at which projectors flicker at (although some cheap models do use 60hz/50hz lamps and the high tier ones flicker at 72hz).
    Display refresh rate's psychological and physiological effects have been so forgotten since we all got stuck in the HDMI standard since the LCD revolution, but this is such a nice and unexpected comeback! Just remember some old wisdom from the CRT era tho: the lower the refresh rate the higher the chance to experience headaches. At 85hz or higher almost zero percent of people experiences headaches from a display's flickering lights. Thus, assuming that this panel is doing the double frequency trick to prevent headaches, I would not recommend setting it at less than 43hz.

      Yes, the input latency is a lot higher with the artificial limiter than it is if you limit refresh rate. The reason being how Gamescope does the limiting right now. It should be improved, but currently 30fps limited in-game (on The Witcher 3) has around 1/2 the input latency than 30fps limited by Gamescope (yes, I measured them using a 960fps camera).

      @@Drivenby You likely saw my tests, which keep getting reposted all around. They are absolutely accurate, but it’s worth noting there is only significant input latency when using the Steam Deck’s OS-level framerate limiter, not simply changing the refresh rate of the screen.

I remember after insomniac put out that 120hz/40fps mode for R&C I went ahead and tested 40fps in a bunch of PC games and yeah, it's definitely has enough of an edge over 30 to bother with if you can't hit 60. Being accustomed to 60-144hz minimum at this point means 40 still looks relatively choppy to my eyes but I can definitely acknowledge the improvement.

    Hi Alex, thanks for the great video!
    I have a question and will try to be as straight to the point as possible:
    - Even though I am quite experienced in the PC gaming world, I'm quite overwhelmed by all the settings to tinker with on the SteamDeck. Resolution, FSR, change Hz, lock FPS, lower TDP.. Then there's in-game settings.. etc etc.
    The question: If I'd like to target 40 fps on any game, what would you recommend to use as a 'standard' guideline to, step by step, get the most battery performance out of the Deck? What should I do first?
    It can be so confusing because there are too many combinations.. For example, I can use FSR, but do I lower the in-game framerate to 720p + lower GPU clock, or to 480 without lowering GPU? This is just an example but is there step-by-step plan of action to follow to get a decent optimization in most cases?
    Sry for the long message! I love DF's videos, even though I don't understand all of it :)
    Much love from Netherlands ✌

    I think the adjustable refresh is fantastic. For games where I can't quite get to a locked 60, I can usually get a locked 40 without too much compromise. I think the best example I've noted so far is dishonored 2. I just couldn't get a locked 60 unless I turned the quality way down...even with FSR. But I can run it at native 800p, no FSR, high settings at an almost completely locked 40 FPS. It feels great, no quite 60 but significantly better than 30, and in a game like dishonored 2 40 FPS is just fine.

    I presumed that the screen could technically support VRR since the refresh can be changed at that range and I wouldn't be surprised if VRR would be added in an update. I figured they haven't have it yet due to the software itself not working properly with the drivers they have. Not a hardware or software expert, but with the display being able to dynamically change refresh like that for a modern display should be able to do VRR on a hardware level.

      I don't think it's possible, but not an expert either. Valve delayed the release of this beta because they were getting the black screen time down when switching refresh rates. Right now, it's about 1/4 of a second. It doesn't update on the fly, only when you stop sliding the slider and at that point there's a blink of black screen.
