Since being in Germany for a longer period of time now, I noticed that Germany has changed me (Phil says for the better :). Have you noticed similar changes? 😀
Also, we want to state that even if some of these things are pretty "German" doesn't mean they aren't common in other countries as well! There are wayyyyy more similarities than differences and we just wanted to talk about the changes in this video. 🤗💜
hey phil ich hab mich gefragt ob es bei euch auch üblich ist grillkartoffeln zu essen? wenn wir mit der familie grillen gibt es normalerweise fleisch salat etc. und am ende wenn alle fast satt sind packen wir ein paar in alufolie eingepackte kartoffeln direkt auf die kohle und quatschen und klönen noch für circy ne halbe stunde bis die guten fertig sind und wir sie endlich mit kartoffelcreme tzaziki oder kräuterbutter essen, sozusagen als 2. gang :>
I moved here from the US and I notice the same changes in myself as you. Except the potatoes...always been a potato fan. 🙃
Most parts of the world can't stand limburger cheese whilst I love it I think it's funny
One good reason you guys might not have thought about to live in the Rhine-Ruhr area like Köln is it's proximity to Belgium and the Netherlands, so during the summer it would be easy to just go to a nice seaside or beach area in the Benelux, at the same time the region is still close enough to airports like Amsterdam or Frankfurt .

Unfortunately in Germany, you see less and less real bakeries. Most of the so called bakeries, receive deep-frozen industrially produced bakery products that are simply thrown into an oven in that specific outlet. This has nothing to do with artisanal baking. If you have a real artisanal bakery in your neighborhood, support it by all means!
@@marcuszaja6589 I used to have a really good artisanal bakery in the Bavarian village that I live in, but unfortunately the owners decided to sell it a few years ago, so one of these "Aufbackshops" moved in and since then, the quality of the products being sold, has been light years away from what was being produced previously (they also had their own sourdough bread and a delicious potato bread). Quite sad - but I suppose that's what you call "progress" 🤔
If I only could upvote this comment more than once! Just lost my local artisanal bakery due to him retiring. I'm afraid I will never have a proper Roggenmischbrot in my life again. To hell with those industrially produced bread and pastries!
I have a mix of both...there are two bakeries close to me which are outlets of two traditional bakeries. Some of the stuff is just "thrown into an oven" there two, but it COMES out of a proper "Backstube". before getting there. Sourdought and similiar are an option. Like, in one case this is the only "outlet" of the bakery, and in the other case there are a few, but in both cases the "central bakery" is in my own town (just not in walking distance like the "outlets" are). I have tried and there is no difference between the stuff they sell in the outlet and the one they sell in the "central bakery".

Bäckereien die noch alles per Hand zubereiten und nicht mit Fertigmischungen erkennt man leicht daran das diese eine weit geringere Auswahl an Broten und anderen Teigwaren anbieten.
Jede Teigware benötigt Arbeit und oft auch einen eigenen Teig.
Diesen herzustellen braucht viel zeit, Materialien und oft auch Platz (Mischgerät ect.).
Somit sind Bäcker, die alles noch selbst zubereiten meist nicht im stande 20 Verschiedene Teige gleichzeitig herzustellen.
Das Angebot ist damit oft eben wesentlich kleiner als bei Industriebackketten.
Jedoch haben diese Traditionellen Bäcker oft wechselnde Teigwaren, abhängig vom Wochentag.

And many people in germany understand english. Maybe they are not used to each and every phrase, but at least at the second try they would understand what you say in english if you don't know that in german. That's no problem. They would help you.
The potato thing is exactly the same in Sweden as in Germany
I don't see potatoes as an only German thing. The Irish, English, Russians all eat lots of potatoes. In the very northern countries, potatoes are probably the largest crop. Lets not forget the Irish Potato Famine.
My heritage is Irish, English, German and both sides ate lots of potatoes...I got sick of them, as a kid. But I do prefer eastern European cuisines, including German......and French Cajun/Creole.

@@Zak_McKracken81 High heels are very damaging to health, what might be pretty, leads to a permanently tilted pelvis and warped foot bones, even on small heels. It's really terrible those shoes are considered "beautiful" considering the damage they inflict on the human body.

@@DeanaandPhil Nope Chicago has them as a staple too. The pizza, hot dogs, gyros, and Italian beef sandwiches are the highlights though even though potatoes are served with everything but the pizza. Personally I would love to see Phil try a good gyro.

I lived and worked in Germany for 5 years and really do miss the Kaffee und Kuchen -- and of course the beer!
I am German and I love Potatoes. They are so easy to use, you can do anything with them, and they are dirt cheap. I think they are deeply ingrained in the culture and recent history of German. The Prussian King Friedrich II even gave the "Kartoffelbefehl" in the late seventeen hundreds. Every farmer was to be educated on potatoes and should plant them where any free space was. There are still people lying down potatoes at his grave in Sancssouci.

Yeah, only a man can claim that wearing leggings is okay...for one, most people who wear leggins really, really shouldn't, and two, it really looks half-dressed. Leggins were a thing in Germany in the 1990s, and tehre is a REASON why the trend was abandonned pretty fast.
C'mon don't be sooo strict about this.The only thing is that some ladies wear far too tight leggings in public which hurts my eyes ...

@@DeanaandPhil Potatoes: Even some Turkish bakers in Germany expand their typical products (Fladenbrot, Baklava etc) for the German customers and offer "Kartoffel Börek". I was very sursprised when I saw that (by the way, "Kartoffel Börek" tastes delicious. You should try it, if you see it).

I am from Canada and lived in Munich for a year and totally understand what you are saying about leggings. I felt really weird wearing them out in public if I wasn't going to a workout class because I felt like I stood out like a sore thumb. Haha not sure if it just because no one wears athletic clothes as streetwear but I definitely found myself wearing them less.

You two are and have always been informative and entertaining. My grandparents lived in Germany until their deaths and I myself was born in Linz a.d. Austria. My cousins still reside in Austria. Watching you is so entertaining and reminds me of my love of Germany and Austria. My wife and I have traveled there annually for many years. I live through your adventures and am happy that you enjoy so many adventures. The memories will last forever. Keep doing what you are doing.

You two are my favorite “German Life” You Tubers! I am from Ohio and I agree with Phil, it get annoyed that the price listed isn’t the price I have to pay. I can’t keep up with state and local taxes. Keep it simple and just list the total cost. Deana, I have noticed a change in your accent when you say certain words now too! I think I am a German at heart. Love the way Germans live!

Leggings look like trash here in the US. Wear them to the gym or yoga but not in public. During the summer, a lot of girls dress really trashy too.
Leggins and sports wear in public is so "sub class" here in Germany. Sports wear for sport!

My parents had potatos with almost every meal. So, when starting to cook on my own, rice and noodles where the only thing for decades. It is just now, that I have come back to appreciate potatos. "The best french fries ?" A big deal!

Ever since i move to Germany :
1) I go to Edeka at least 4 times a week!
2) DM is my heaven, there is no way i go in and not come out with a single thing!
3) Bread , cold cut, cheese with butter, coffee - everyday breakfast.
4) I stop to drink milk but in love with Haferdrink!
5) I stop to wear that much makeup.
6) I talk quietly.....(shiiiii

I remember when I saw people wearing leggings and no skirts or dresses on top for the first time. I thought it looked like wearing see-through tights and nothing on top. As if they had forgotten something. :D I still feel that way, though I don't care. People should wear whatever they want. Even if I think it's funny. ^^
It’s kind of funny because Germans are less prudish about things like nudity. It’s like you can be naked but if you’re going to wear clothes don’t wear this one specific bit of clothing. I always assumed it was because it’s too casual for Germans who love people to look very put together when they go out.

Deana I couldn’t agree more about wearing leggings in public... American women will do their hair and makeup and wear leggings and a sweatshirt and that is a perfectly normal way to run around in public, especially if you’re just going to the grocery store. I tried it once in Germany and immediately felt uncomfortable. I now make sure I am dressed up a little more when in Germany, even if I’m just going to the supermarket!
Also, I had to laugh when you said the coffee and cake culture is “your favorite” and Phil said “that just means she likes it” 😂😂 this is a frequent topic of conversation in our house as well. I always say “I love that!” Or “that’s the best!” Or “that’s my favorite” and my husband thinks it’s a bit dramatic 😆. He always says “how can so many things be your favorite?” Germans would say “I like that” or “that’s quite nice” but rarely use the words “love” or “favorite” to describe things they like (at least from my experience).
Americans just love their hyperbole.

Potatoes were one of my favorite foods since childhood along with chocolate, bread, cheese and coffee and for those reasons (I could live off of those few things only for the rest of my life, no exaggeration), I loved, loved, loved living in Bayern in Germany and to this day, 7.5 years after coming back stateside, I still miss it!!! Also, the calmness, the country living right outside city limits (only in huge city it feels like actual city living), the clean, adorned, freshly planted flowers in the cities/towns, the freshness of the food in the supermarkets and at the butcher’s!! The bäckerei yummy goodness!! And now I’m crying reminiscing!! Ok, fertig. By the way, I agree with everything you said about how Deutschland has changed you. It was a big culture shock for me and took time to adjust back to stateside living. I came back with great memories though!

The way you feel about leggings in Germany is how I initially felt about shorts in Japan. People don’t wear shorts so much here, so I stopped wearing them for the longest time. I finally decided to wear what I want, even if that means being asked over and over “AREN’T YOU COLD???” when it’s below 23°C. Lol

I always am very very happy if somebody from foreign country likes the environment where I am born. It is a big compliment and warms the heart. Germany is such a beautiful, secured and protected area to live that I feel always very comfotable. Potatoes are base culture. As a student there are always 2 dishes: spaghetti with tomato sauce and potato with 'kräuterquark'. Saves generations of student lives at the end of the month. :-)
In my small town, in rural PA, our grocery store is closed on Sunday. We have a dollar general too though and it's open every day. I drive 2 miles down into town to go to the store and I usually go every day. ☺
My family has always eaten a lot of potatoes, with almost every meal in some form.
I would love to see Phil try different toppings on baked potatoes such as a fully loaded baked potato. 🍛

Kartofler / potatoes are common in northern Europe I think in Denmark we count them as our main meal
I grew up in Illinois in the30' & 40. My father loved potatoes, we had potatoes every day mostly mashed but also roasted and home fries.
I love potatoes more than any other vegetable. I’m Polish by birth. We LOVE potatoes 🇵🇱🇩🇪🥔❤️
Half the carbohydrates of pasta or any other side dishes made from flour.
There are so many delicious kinds of potatoes. Bamberger Hörnchen is my favourite, or “Neue Kartoffeln” with Spargel and Sauce Hollandaise! A thick slice of smoked ham beside... Bratkartoffeln, Kartoffelgratin, Kartoffelpuffer....Buttered Potatoes, Baked Otatoes.
I’m wondering now,if I have some German in my heritage. We always had coffee and cake in late afternoon and or when company stopped over. We also had potatoes with every meal. Lost of sauerkraut too. My Gmaw use to make it from Scratch! Do Germans also,eat lots of onions & use plenty of black pepper? We did/do & we live into our late 90’s & 100’s!
Maybe you do! A lot of countries here in Europe enjoy some type of afternoon treat. 😍 Ohhh homemade sauerkraut sounds delicious! I think Germans use onions and black pepper.. at least the ones we know do!
have you ever heard of onion cake with bacon and sour cream, or of the so-called " RESTE ESSEN " (leftovers from the day before mixed together), for example noodles with fried potatoes?
Well we put onions in many dishes, but mostly we chop them into tiny little cubes, put them in a frying pan, add oil and stir them until they are a nice glassy brown color as the first inge and then add the rest according to whatever dish we made in the moment.

@@axelk4921 Resteessen is when you fry all of the leftovers with potatoes in a pan. (Pyttipanna in swedish). The cake with onions, sour cream and bacon bits is "Zwiebelkuchen" - it's a bit too late in the year for Federweißer, sadly, but fruity white wine will do as an accompaniment as well.
I'm with Deana on the "Kaffee und Kuchen" in the afternoon! That was always one of my favorite things about visiting my family in Germany. In addition to eating lots of potatoes, Germans use the small golden potatoes and seem to have fewer varieties than we do in the US. I have never had a baked potato in Germany.
I love potatoes! One of my favorite original dishes is the Hot Mess. It's country fried potatoes mixed with your choice of meat, usually spicy ground turkey with pepper flakes, your choice of cheese (usually shredded Mexican cheese), and a ton Siracha (I freakin' love Siracha!).
Potatoes are very popular in the Midwest too (heck, all of the middle and northern states). Very!
I have absolutely loved potatoes. What I notice is German's have so many different kinds of potatoes. Each potato is used for something specific. Soup potatoes are different from baking or fried. Some are more starchy then others. So weird, but I can eat potatoes in any way made. 🥔 🥔 🥔 🥔
You guys are soooo cool. I am a Hungarian living in Berlin-Potsdam now with my German BF. And I can tell, that the sweatpant thing is REAL. In Hungary, especially in Budapest, wearing gym clothes as a lifestyle or just that you go and grab something from the grocery and you don't want to change from home wear to jeans is totally a thing. When I arrived to Berlin, after a months my boyfriend nicely asked me if I can maybe change to jeans as HE FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE that I am wearing joggers to shop or for a stroll around the lake!!!!! Big mac menu in all Schengen countries is 6 euros , whereas in Turkey big mac menu, whopper menu is 2.10 euros. 2 pounds of tomatos during the summer time is 40 cents , 2 pounds of apple is priced 70 cents, 2 pounds of pastry is priced at pattiserie , 7 euros in Turkey. 2 pounds of either potato, cucumber, cabage is priced 50 cents. All kinds of fruits and vegetables are produced in Turkey.

Im Irish living in Germany just 3 weeks now. We are the ultimate potato eaters and also given derogatory terms spud diggers, etc. I love Germany and the people here but mostly am so grateful to find a part of culture in common. Look up the man who lived a year only eating potatoes. Its very interesting 🤔 love these vids. Helps me feel like less of an alien xx

Als ich im Rheintal und im Moseltal war. Plus im Hamburger und Bremer Kreis. Kartoffeln wurden dort zu allen Abendessen gegessen.
As a person in Minnesota and my maternal grandparents are from Norway (grandma) and Germany (grandpa) ... Potatoes are a staple, for sure.
That supermarket shopping segment really got me laughing. I am in Las Vegas, NV. I go shopping for groceries at 3 a.m. sometimes. I work the late shift in a casino is the reason. Everything here is open 24/7. Especially bars. I love it. Two pretzels walk into a bar . One of them was assaulted. Say it fast and you will get it. Hahaha.
