The fact that Kaine recognizes Emil right away is such a small little story beat but it adds so much. The fact that she doesn't see people as what they are on the outside because she spent her whole life ostracized for her body. It crushes me every time.
I may have played automata first and only played OG Nier within the past year, but dammit. Why are there characters so great. All playing the original Nier did was made Emil's story even sadder. Plus added so much depth to the series and make me wish I would have had the chance to play it sooner.

Automata really disappointed me too. It felt shallow and cheesy compared to the story of the first Nier. I didn't make it past route B. Gonna give it another chance to see if the other playthroughs are better. It just didn't move me.

I remember being really hype when I first played it, thought the whole harem/sexual exploitation thing could have some really really interesting unexplored angles to it, and then it just... Didn't. A lot of the lore and events are hazily implied, a hell of a lot of it just makes no sense, and the sexual stuff goes ABSOLUTELY nowhere in terms of narrative. I think I can still understand why someone would like it? Like, if nothing else it makes the mind go into some interesting places, but it's a shame the narrative itself didn't follow imo.

By new nier you meant automata or replicant? In replicant .. well.. of course because this is the same game but in replicant you Play brother instead of father like in gestalt.
I believe it has nothing to do with the remake/remaster but with the version of the game. In this version the protagonist is a father (NieR: Gestalt). In the remake/remaster he is a young boy and grew after the timeskip.
The original Japanese ver. (NieR: Replicant) Nier was a teenage boy and Yonah was his sister. For the version other countries got (NieR: Gestalt), they were asked to change Nier since an adult male main would sell better in those regions. So Nier became Yonah's father, and they only significantly changed lines that had to do with their relationship, while keeping his characterization more or less the same. Note while canon mostly favors Brother Nier, the existence of branching and parallel timelines in NieR/Drakengard universe as well as a few references in Automata can mean both versions can "exist"

The two are the same game save for a different main character with different relationships to the other characters, different backstories and slightly different dialogue. However only Gestalt was released in the west because America was extremely sensitive to LGBT themes back then, and since Kaine was a hermaphrodite... Kaine's relationship with Nier was also suppressed in the English release because of the age difference with papa Nier.
Idk if it was a remake change or if it always played out like this in Replicant but I think Nier being the one who says "it's not as good as your grandma's" works better. Like those things are hard to grow, bringing her grandma's wreath up to papa Nier seems kinda rude. And not in the way she's usually rude and vulgar if that makes sense.

Its like I can understand that this game isnt the best because it does have flaws here and there but I still enjoyed the journey I took in this game compared to automata, got way more emotions out of me from the storytelling in this game and I cared more about the characters hell I even cared more about Emil (I played this game after automata 😣) and he became one of my favorite characters of all time. I thought the characters in near a tomato were well constructed.
