    It's astonishing how the skillful addition of colour and adjustments to contrast, Haze and luminosity brings the image to life and then the cherry on the cake, animation of the face. It's just genius.

      @@coconut569 There are video clips from movies that document their lives. The whole family was brutally murdered as a result of the Russian revolution. It's a very heartbreaking page from history.

But the tsar's unsuccessful and even stupid policy resulted in a succession of revolts (1905, 1917 February and October) and we all know the outcome. But shooting teenagers in a basement, pouring acid on their faces and bodies and burying their remains in a pit, a dirt hole was too cruel, don't you think?

    I love these videos with adding color and animations since I’ve always wondered what they really looked like during that moment when the photograph was taken. If that makes sense. It’s so much different with color. That amazes me.

    I am in my 70's. I cannot begin to count the number of times in my childhood and youth I saw Sarita Montiel on screen - at the movies or on TV. It is very interesting for me to see her in this way. - Of course, I cannot pass by the humanization of greats like Charles Dickens and Edgar Allan Poe. I read the works of both to this day.

    I love all these photos, but most especially the one of the three little sisters. So very cute! I collect old photos and postcards. Most of my photos are of women and children. There are so many lovely images out there.

    All lovely... Sara Montiel was one of my mothers favourite actresses. My mother was only a little younger than her. My mother died five months ago... this would have made her day... Poe and Dickens look amazing as well... the Romanovs are always hard to see wether in black and white or in colour... An unforgettable thing the Russians of the time did.

      I would imagine that Sara Montiel greatly assisted her then husband director Anthony Mann in making the passion and heroism of Spain come alive so profoundly in his film El Cid starring Charlton Heston and Sophia Loren.

    One of the things that to me is interesting about photography as an art and science, is the high quality of the photos produced from even the very earliest cameras. The photos of Matthew Brady are still stunning today, and make a great base for colorization. I'm not sure what other inventions started out at such a high level of quality, but certainly by comparison things like the car, plane and computers did not.

      @@Cassxowary Oh, stop. It stinks to get old and ugly, and the loss of youthful beauty is a tragedy. Beauty is fleeting, like flowers in spring. There's nothing wrong with recognizing reality, but there's a lot wrong with denying reality. Sure, gaining more knowledge and experience is part of the good part of aging, but nobody becomes more physically beautiful with old age (of course, some hold on to more of it than others).

I do have to say when the picture of Edgar Allen Poe was shown i forgot about the eyes and facial expression kinda moving was startled at first because i looked away and looking back his eyes moved right in my direction😃.     Incredible. Brings out a lot of empathy for those that went before. You can really tell that having your photo taken was a very big deal for many of the earlier folks as they were wearing clothes that likely took a month's worth of the then average salary for those times. I wonder if similar emapathies might be evoked in folks of later centuries over photos taken of our times?
