Ah I still remember getting my SP I was 7 at the time and had been waiting over a month since my actual birthday to get the SP. Even now in 2012 at 16 years of age I still play it and I love the nostalgic feel it gives me. Long live the Gameboy!
Unimpressive design?? I fell in LOVE with the GameBoy Advance at first glance because of its design, and to this day, though the pocket is my favorite handheld, the GBA has my favorite design >.
I have such nostalgia for the GameBoy and still have one. But it's so hard going back and trying to play it on such a small screen with no back or front lighting, and no way of putting it in sleep mode if I suddenly have to do something. I've become spoiled by smartphones and the DS line. The GameBoy was amazing for it's time but we've improved so much since then it's impossible to go back.
I still have the original game boy , game boy color ,game boy advance and game boy advance sp! :D love those little machines, so many good games on all of'em!
Wow, the Microvision! I actually got one of those for Christmas in 1986! Shortly thereafter I took it apart to see how it worked, but I digress. I had an original Game Boy back in 1994, got an Original DS back in 2007, got a white DS Lite about a year after that, currently own a silver DS Lite and am going to get a Midnight Purple 3DS.
Just bought a Gameboy advance sp from a thrift shop yesterday. Though I'm still able to afford for more beautifully animated games, but those just never bring me the same feeling as this tiny little gadget --- the feeling of the 90s and 2000s
Release history of toy: 1989 - Game Boy 1996 - Game Boy Pocket 1998 - Game Boy Color 2001 - Game Boy Advance 2003 - Game Boy Advance SP 2005 - Game Boy Micro
Letfordlay Why don't you buy a Nintendo DS Lite + R4i SDHC + EZ-Flash 3in1? With it you can play: Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 2600, Atari 800/XL/130XE/5200, Chip8, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, Micro Lua Simulator, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, Macintosh, MAME, MS-DOS, PokeMini, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, MSX, Nintendo DS, Neo Geo, Neo Geo Pocket, NES, Scumm, Spectrum, Super Nintendo, Wonderswan, and ZX81 games.
i have a ds lite but not an ez-flash i cant find one anywhere the ds lite wont turn on though, it turns on than one of the screens flash white than it turns off
From where you are? Aside the EZ, if the upper screen it's the only problem, replace it. Just buy it in any web market (MercadoLibre, eBay, Amazon), and watch TH-cam tutorials. The replacement is very easy even for electronic noobs like me. The only hard thing is take out the speakers and put them in the new screen.
OMG, the memories this video invokes nearly bring tears to my eyes, because the 90's and early 00's were the best of my life and me and all of my mates owned every gameboy from Pocket, through to the Advance SP, along with Pokemon Red, Blue, Silver, Gold, Crystal, and the SP era Fire Red and Leaf Green...... :-D
I remember my friend at school had an original gameboy which he played on the bus..man I was sooo envious. The gamegear was pretty cool, I never played a Lynx.
Maybe not for your typical head phones, but you could get special headphones that plugged into the charger port of the Gameboy Advance SP. I have a pair, and they work fairly well, considering the game I mostly play is Pokemon: Yellow Version.
omg the memories ;) first I had the original Game Boy from my sister, and I played Tetris and Super Mario on it. then I got a turquoise Game Boy Color and me and my neighbours would spend so much time playing Pokemon.. I had the Blue and Gold editions :') later I got a Game Boy Advance SP and mainly played Shrek and Sims. I will never forget the Pokemon times, though. I'm really glad I grew up in that time
I had the original gameboy, then upgraded to a red pocket, then to a turquoise color, to a white advance, to a silver SP , skipped the launch DS , then bought a white Lite and now have the black 3DS . man how time flies . I wish I would've kept them all but found myself just trading for the new model:/ many good memories All the same.
i have a gameboy color, gameboy advance, had a gameboy advance sp but lost it as a kid with games for the 1st gen such as tetris, pokemon red, super mario land, super mario bros. deluxe and link's awakening dx. i love being an old school gamer
My first ever handheld was the GBA SP pearl blue, then i got the black ds lite, then upgraded to a dsi(white), then to a dsiXL(magenta), original gameboy, gameboy color(light green), and then last but not least the 3DS. I still have most of these games
Looking back... Tetris is sort of like Angry Birds or some other popular smartphone game. It got the attention of non-gamers. Even some of my teachers knew about Tetris (gaming hadn't reached the mainstream yet). At the same time it was a wonderfully innovative puzzler with an addictive quality that regular gamers could appreciate. You could play it for a few minutes, or invest an hour or two. It really was the perfect pack-in for a portable system.
Original Game Boy packaged with Zelda: Link's Awakening, Green Game Boy Pocket, Clear Purple Game Boy Color, Arctic White Game Boy Advance, NES edition Game Boy Advance SP. Just recently, grabbed the Play it Loud Clear Game Boy to relive some memories. What a great system!!!
Still have my Advance SP, and the Gameboy player fir the Gamecube which is great when you don't want to squint. I'm playing through old games I missed like Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga on my old 36" standard def flatscreen and it's awesome!
I can still remember the day I went to toys R US with my dad and I got the Glacier Gameboy advance with pokemon ruby and sapphire and my addiction had started when I got a gameboy color with Pokemon Crystal in it. My Crystal hit the limit then the battery died with my save file in 2005 I still remember it was the summer of 2005! To this day I remember all the fond memories of playing All the gameboy line after the Color even the micro. I now have 1 or more of every nintendo gameboy released in
Talking about tetris with the pokemon music in the background.....ultimate victory nintendo. Here's to my great childhood, and the many more lives yet to discover the game boy's true potential.
played all the pokemon games except for pokemon black and white. Still remembered bringing my clear gameboy everywhere to play. Gameboy original, gameboy colour clear, Gameboy Advance SP, Nintendo DS Lite Polar White, and Nintendo DSi Blue
SP has a proprietary rechargeable battery... Those things eventually stop working and due to it's proprietary design you will likely have to pay quite a bit for a replacement since they have to be custom made. Only really worth it if you get a special edition one like the one with Pikachu's face on it. And if the back light is all you want you can actually modify an original gameboy advance to use the SP screen I think.
I played GameBoy, han GameBoy Color, than GameBoy Advance! I had them all! dispite t6he fact that I am only 14. I am 8 years YOUNDER than GameBoy, but still grew up with it. Favorite memories of childhood: - Pokemon, beatling Elite Four - Super Mario Land, not getting that far - Super Mario Land 2, clearing the worlds which was fun as HELL. and off course that gambling in it ;)
i remember getting a gameboy advance when it was really popular and there was no PSP or nintendo DS, i remember playing such awesome games. we are so spoiled these days
I found a "Mega Memory Card" made by the same company as the gameshark that can copy the save file of a gameboy or gameboy color game and then rewrite the save back to the game's cartridge later. I use it to keep my save files whenever the save battery starts to die. My Pokemon saves are as old as the cartridges themselves.
I started with the Gameboy Color and Pokemon Yellow and from there I've owned each new handheld as they came out. Though I've never had the original Gameboy....
The one to have is that Japan only GBC Light with the back lit screen. So if you've got that, you're set. I picked up a Japanese GBC for around $30 off Ebay. It matches Pokemon Red! :D
Now with the Nintendo 3DS coming up, we can get Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on the 3DS Virtual Console as well as Turbo-Grafix 16 games and Sega Game Gear games
I loved my Gameboy. And I love my Gameboy Advance Sp. I still play the old original gray Gameboy games. As well as GBA games. Honestly, I prefer the Gameboy over the DS. I've never been a huge fan of "alternate" controls. ..Touch screens, motion controls, etc. I always preferred a nice simple..controller. Actual buttons. The GBA has to be my favorite system, ever. It had awesome games. No weird touch screen crap, and was just...awesome.
I would agree that the first Game Boy (which also included the later 'Pocket' variant) had the most important (and innovative for that reason) library of game titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Pokemon Red/Blue, Tetris and Donkey Kong '94. The 'Color' is part of the 5th generation of video game consoles and for a three-year life span it just didn't manage to impress all that much with the games it offered. The 'Advance' on the other hand brought back the faith in the GB line.
A Game Boy released in 1997 exclusively in Japan. It was essentially a GB Pocket with a backlight and 2 AA batteries, rather than 2 AAAs. It wasn't released in the rest of the world because Nintendo thought that it wouldn't catch on, after all, the GB Color was less than a year away. (Think about it, which would you rather have: A GB Pocket with a backlight, or an entirely new Game Boy with color?) There you go, I answered your question. Now answer mine?
Nintendo were originally planning to continue the Game Boy line with the Game Boy 64, but they decided to destroy and rebuild with the DS. The Game Boy Original was the only console to completely dominate a market for 8 uninterrupted years. Quite an achievement considering it was criticised as old tech pretty much as soon as it came out, let alone in 96, when Pokemon came out of nowhere and resurrected the Game Boy, paving the way for the Game Boy Colour.
Not sure if I'm just being stupid, but is that what appears to be Pokemon Gold/Silver on the GBA (or with GBA graphics) at 4:45? Isn't that game only for the GBC?
Idk why but as a kid my parents kept getting me game boy advances, altogether I owned 7 gbas 4 blue one black one silver and a red one, the silver and 2 blues were found, 1 blue was bought fresh but it broke, I lost the black in preschool and that one was GameStop bought at the time it released the other blue was from a garage sale, which I own now still and the red was from a electronic store
I never thought of Pokemon as so key to Gameboy. In fact, my impression was that it came in towards the end of the Gameboy, and the beginning of the Gameboy Color, aka the second generation Gameboy. And I had always wanted a Gameboy and enjoyed so many other games on it besides Pokemon. So I guess what I'm saying is that Pokemon was a big franchise for Nintendo, but it isn't synonymous with Gameboy since there was so much more to the handheld system.
The game boy micro ...i didn't notice any advertisement for the system. So i think the lack of advertisement, if there was a lack, contributed to the fail.
@xXMethodKidXx The DS lasts pretty long like Game Boy. The screen hinge for the DS is pretty sturdy in my opinion. idk, but it depends on how the person handles it.
of first of all this is what i am thinking design like game boy advanced original with being able to touch that screen, abxy buttons, 2 circlepads that you can push down, shoulder and trigger buttons, and a dpad
Man the nostalgia. I used to have a Nintendo DS Lite. I still have it. I remember playing Mario Kart with my friends every day. That was awesome.
4:21
is that Edmol's TF art?
IS NO ONE ASKING WHAT KIND OF PICTURE IS 4:15
that was... aw weird picture of Pokemon..
It wouldn't be called the Gameboy if it was made today. People these days are butthurt by everything.
THEY SHOULD CALL IT THE GAMEGIRL SJDBSJXSIHXWUXGEYCSUBXAUXNAI
+Gabagel STUDIO They should call it the gamenonbinarytranswolfkin.
+john doe should be called game-glbt

Ah I still remember getting my SP I was 7 at the time and had been waiting over a month since my actual birthday to get the SP. Even now in 2012 at 16 years of age I still play it and I love the nostalgic feel it gives me. Long live the Gameboy!

Unimpressive design?? I fell in LOVE with the GameBoy Advance at first glance because of its design, and to this day, though the pocket is my favorite handheld, the GBA has my favorite design >.
If the original gba had a backlit screen and rechargable batteries then it would be the best game boy ever made
IS NO ONE NOTICING THE TRANSFORMATION FETISH IMAGE
Ok... WHAT WAS WITH THE PICTURE AT 4:14?!?

they just want more money by making us buy off the ds market.... thats why i have a 3ds AND a gameboy
Letfordlay Why don't you buy a Nintendo DS Lite + R4i SDHC + EZ-Flash 3in1?
With it you can play: Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 2600, Atari 800/XL/130XE/5200, Chip8, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, Micro Lua Simulator, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, Macintosh, MAME, MS-DOS, PokeMini, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, MSX, Nintendo DS, Neo Geo, Neo Geo Pocket, NES, Scumm, Spectrum, Super Nintendo, Wonderswan, and ZX81 games.

Maybe not for your typical head phones, but you could get special headphones that plugged into the charger port of the Gameboy Advance SP. I have a pair, and they work fairly well, considering the game I mostly play is Pokemon: Yellow Version.

it's amazing how technology has evolved, comparing the first gameboy to the ps vita is kinda mind blowing.

Such a magical device from my childhood.
The best handheld I've never owned. I've mooched every version of Game Boy off my friends except the GBP and Micro.
@HawkeyeWii Yeah, there were 2 of them i think. Atomic Purple for Game Boy Color and the light purple for Advance.
Still have my Advance SP, and the Gameboy player fir the Gamecube which is great when you don't want to squint. I'm playing through old games I missed like Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga on my old 36" standard def flatscreen and it's awesome!

4:13 this image is VERY wrong.
If you know what I mean.
I had an Advance SP as a kid. I loved that thing.
On JUly 31st, the Game Boy turns 25, and on July 30th, I turn 25! We're practically twins! :)
Hard to believe this video is around 10 years old now
SP has a proprietary rechargeable battery...

Reminds me of the good ol' times when I took Pokemon Blue seriously. Still play it from time to time. I need a DS.
Gameboy Advance sp brings memories back in 2003 ahhh good times... I wish to have it in 2017
Now with the Nintendo 3DS coming up, we can get Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on the 3DS Virtual Console as well as Turbo-Grafix 16 games and Sega Game Gear games
I still have my Gameboy advance sp and play it every once in a while.
I loved my Gameboy. And I love my Gameboy Advance Sp. I still play the old original gray Gameboy games. As well as GBA games. Honestly, I prefer the Gameboy over the DS. Damn coming up on 30 years.
If today, gameboy is made and named by meme artist it'll become Gameboiiiiiiii
In 2016 now, but still loving it.
There you go, I answered your question. Now answer mine?
The FIRST time EVER I played a Pokemon Game, was on a plane. I chose Cyndaquil. I never get to use him, but he's my favourite.
What's the game at 4:57?
Many people do not consider a DS as a sequel to the game boy era.
It's indeed different, but to me, the Game Boy still lives in the DS.
80s-2000s was on of the BEST era f handhelds :) im glad to 12 kinda i still have all my gameboy items xD

I have my Yellow one from when I was probably 6-7 years old :) and my Advance SP from when I was around 13, I'm 18 now. =)
You had a Nice run Gamboy.... Your legacy still lives on.
Not sure if I'm just being stupid, but is that what appears to be Pokemon Gold/Silver on the GBA (or with GBA graphics) at 4:45? Isn't that game only for the GBC?
If you had one of these, you had an awesome childhood
I still have my Gameboy Advance SP that I got my cousin 5 years ago! :3
I remember those days playing my Gameboy Advance :)
I regret not getting this special edition.

And now, it’s 30 years old
with flame wars about specs and exclusive dominating the internet, it's nice to see people group behind a system that was flawed and be nostalgic.
@xXMethodKidXx
The DS lasts pretty long like Game Boy. The screen hinge for the DS is pretty sturdy in my opinion. idk, but it depends on how the person handles it.
the memories and a staple this was ! gameboy color was my favorite among them and the gb advance sp
I miss both of my original Gameboys...
I just ordered it on e-bay with 4 games. :) Had it back then when it came out...
I remember playing the Gameboy Color as a kid, so awesome
of first of all this is what i am thinking design like game boy advanced original with being able to touch that screen, abxy buttons, 2 circlepads that you can push down, shoulder and trigger buttons, and a dpad
