Yay Dustin!! 💗 Thanks so much for your help and letting me pester you with 'Is this germination? Or is this?' 😆😆😆 Thanks for all your advice! I really hope nothing goes wrong now! 😀 So much fun watching the little sprouts 🌱
I agree 😆 Hard enough getting your head around how to physically do this, the theory behind it will become clearer as I get more experience I think 🙂 Thanks! It's so much fun watching the little sprouts 😀
Go easy on yourself, your doing something most won't even try and takes an incredible amount of patience. If your getting germination job well done in my book!
Thanks Todd! I just wanted to make it super clear that I don't fully know what I'm talking about 😆 I've researched alot, but sometimes you just have to take a leap and gain the knowledge practically to support reading 🙂 I've been recommended a few books, there is so much info online though that they have gone onto the list for later though. Maybe at some point I will buy them, or put them on the Christmas list. Maybe they take a more beginner friendly approach or fill in things better. But nothing like learning from experience right? 🙂
I hardly buy books anymore ... you are right, the research is online .. it’s just a matter of sifting out what is useful! A tremendous effort either way! I find online a little harder to do research on because of just how much appears after a search! Kudos to your efforts and incredible detail in explaining what your different trials were about and why! Love it! So happy for you 🌸
Me either! There is so much info online, and so many research papers on most of the subjects, once you get that initial understanding I think it's better to get to the source! It's just piecing together that initial knowledge thats hard work, I've been recommended a few books, but when there is a choice of how to spend money, the books aren't up there yet. Maybe something to go on the christmas list!
Heartiest congrats on the second attempt!!! Amount of prep and high chance of failure scare most of orchid home growers off. Amazing, Anabel!!! 👏👏👏 Thank you for taking us along. Looking forward to see your little nursary grow 🌱🌱🌱
Looking forward to seeing how these will grow on. Very interesting. However so glad you are doing this and not me, here is why too much work/patience. I do have patience and when I am waiting for an orchid to do something that is fine. But this would drive me nuts and at some point for me I would just give up and say that I had enough. So I am so happy that you are doing this. Very challenging I suppose but very exciting at the same time. Love this journey with you. Have a great day.
Hi Kim! I find the process so fascinating and exciting, and each little milestone happens much quicker when they're this tiny! I just love watching growth and progression 🥰 Have a great day!
@@TheOrchidRoom it is! I would love one/some of the Vandas if possible at some point 🤞 I'm thinking road trip/Ferry ride to England or something if they can't be shipped 🤣
Congratulations Annabel! I’m so excited to see your success. I’ve learned so much from you. I have collected the equipment & my seed pods are almost there. But it is really intimidating to take the plunge. I think I need to expect the first few attempts to just be learning experiences. Thanks again very much for sharing your experience on TH-cam.
Thanks Sherie! It's very daunting I agree! One thing I've started doing is prepping the media 2 weeks before sowing, and keeping it in the sterile box. That way you are only sowing onto flasks that remain sterile. And the phrag seeds had almost no contamination, as I collected them before they had opened fully- so that's good to know also. Good luck! Keeping everything crossed for you 🤞🤞🤞🤞
Thankyou! That may be a little too much work for me, but I will certainly have to consider options if all these make it and I have thousands of baby orchids 🤦♀️😅
Hi Annabel, so I've just gotten around to finish watching your post. Have you popped open that bottle of wine yet? This is really exciting for me and you must be really chuffed with your progress so far. I'm so looking forward to the next stage. Happy sowing or is that plating next? 🌸💜🌸
Not quite yet, I'm still holding my breath waiting for it to all go wrong 🙈🙈🙈 It is so interesting though and hard not to get excited over!💗 Next hurdle will be replating since I sowed these so heavy 🤦♀️🙈
If you sale some in the summer, I am interested. Show us more . I'm very excited for you and envious. Wish I knew how to do this . Its fascinating!! If this would have been in science class I would have studied more
Thankyou 🙃th-cam.com/video/0GYqbLBdhwk/w-d-xo.html latest video, with an update in my community tab 🙃 Are you in the UK? These will obviously be a few years until a sellable size
Well, if you think you are a layman then I think my brain must be mush xD But this is so cool! Ever since I watched Dustin's process I found it so fascinating but of course, I am not nearly ready to do this nor do I have space but one day for sure! I can't wait to see all the future updates, but MOST importantly, how many will you keep haha :D I hope you get tons of new orchids from this experiment!
Currently have 5 flasks of Aliceara seeds - first time doing it with a better set up (sterile box). It's not been a week yet so don't know if I've had any success yet!
From my experience contamination from the flasking process seems to occur in the first 2 weeks. If it's some issue with the sealing it can be longer. And germination seems to start around the 2-3 week mark. I'm keeping everything crossed for you!! 😀
Hi Annabel, hmm one grower I follow uses the brand Naturamin as an added mix to his flasked seeds. You may want to check on that too. Keep experimenting for us! 😊
So exciting! I hope so! Impossible to say really since you can't actually count the seeds, they are like dust 🤦♀️🤷♀️ high germination rate for this cross I would say though!
Congrats on the success. The next question is will this end up being your first and last flasking project because, oof, that's a lot of work. And that's before you have to find homes for the babies.
Um yeah, if all those seeds germinating actually make it to seedling stage, that'll be a lot of orchids. I'm bargaining on my inexperience actually meaning that relatively few per flask make it to the end 😅 Otherwise, I hope some sort of EU deal happens, because.....that many Vandas in the UK 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️😅
@@TheOrchidRoom I deflasked some seedlings three weeks ago. There were a lot of tiny babies in them that I had expected to die so I wouldn't have so many plants. Well, three weeks later, all of two have died. So now I have ~80 plants of two different crosses growing on. Maybe if I can get them to a fair size I can sell them to my local orchid nursery, otherwise 🤷 . I don't want to have to sell on eBay.
How do you make this media liquid they are in now? I have to go back and watch Dustin over and over. Can you do a video of making this substance they are in now. This molasses looking stuff
There's a TH-cam channel that's called here but not he did this flasking stuff too I highly recommend it maybe he can teach you something and vice versa
Grats!!! It’s great to see your little babies! It’s a long process, but so cool, eh? Looking great 👌🏻

@The Orchid Room, thanks for your video. May I know what is the best medium that so far you have found for Vanda seeds germination?
Fascinating!

The Orchid Room You’re welcome 😊. I also tried that to my seedlings and mature orchids. It seems to be working well also.

No, but pollinating is very easy. Any orchid seeds purchased online are usually a scam, unless through swaps with other hobbyists.
