Great sci-fi idea to explore here - obviously, they play it for laughs here, but the core idea demonstrates perfectly how evil some of these modern companies work "pay us, or we will waste your time / life". I love it - even if it's not the funniest - I particularly like the miming scenes, the health bot talking to Lister while trying to squeeze down his artery, and Old Lister who has completely list all self control "I'll have one of them too".

This season is probably my favorite of the whole series. So many great episodes handled marvelously. So many references back to early episodes while also having new events and material going on at the same time. Just absolute Red Dwarfy perfection.

I love this episode! It's so clever and very funny! And I agree it does feel like a really series 1 & 2 vibe. Fun fact, the person who played Steve (the friend Lister could buy) is the audience warm up act for the majority of Series X-XII plus The Promised Land. I attended two episodes, Father and Suns and part one of the Promised Land (in fact when you watch the extras for The Promised Land, I'm actually visible in the opening of one of the extras. Though my friend is the one doing the talking! 😂)

they were never shy about wearing their political heart on their sleeve. And here they are. Red Dwarf's recovered it's fastball and is throwing it right at the head of a contemporary real world issue, just like the good old days. The shift of everything to subscription services, and us not really owning the things we buy. And losing it anyway when a new company buys up the old one or it goes out of business and just shutters it all. Definitely could fit right in with S1 and S2, telling a fun full story without needing to take them off the ship. (Brings up the potential darker side of all the stuff like Dream Recorders and Hologram copies of yourself and potentially not even owning your your own likeness and other stuff like that that was more present in those episodes but not really explored)

I wish someone would reboot me to 23. A fun episode, I do like they don't try and deny they are getting old but the Red Dwarf crew are still as good as ever. The back to basics episodes really make the Dave era work., I remember when you first started during the strike thinking the gals will love Red Dwarf, and I've loved your reactions to this iconic show.
Kind of amused to learn Paula is a fan of Call The Midwife! It's such a weird nostalgia show I find it odd to believe it has watchers outside of the UK and younger than 60! (My mum is a big fan) Are you going to do a wrap up episode when you hit the end of the show? Maybe get Matthew involved after he was the one who recommended it?
Obviously when it comes to the third attempt at making a US version of Red Dwarf, Kat should be cast as Cat - why it's almost as if it was destined... Oh, and before anyone suggests that they should watch the US pilot of Red Dwarf, Kat and Paula are good, decent, kind people and don't deserve that punishment - many of us watched it and faced the consequences so others may he spared! Finally so sad to hear, that the great Tony Slattery died of a heart attack on Monday - his role in Series 8 was minor but he was brilliant in Whose Line Is It Anyway amongst other things. RIP.

Even though its funny, the debt racking in this episode stresses me out because it feels so plausible. It felt more like Red Dwarf doing a Black Mirror concept.
It's because it's like TH-cam - you can subscribe to not get any ads (pay in money, or we'll waste your time / take minutes off your life) - and countless other free to play games or free to use aps - you have to pay for an optimised experience, and if you can't pay, you need to pay with time - it's literally making it clear how the online mobile economies work (limited words you can talk per day is like limited number of texts or messages you can send without upgrading to the next package) - it's scary because it's already here.
