- I like to use the wood material from the yard wasted, tree branches, wood scraps to work on my project, make something useful out of the wasted.
I like to practice nunchuks, but found out most nunchuks that I bought from the martial art store does not fit in my hand, the chain or rope either too long or too short, so I decide to make them myself.
Back in the 80’s I made a pair of nunchucks at the furniture company I worked for. The materials and tools were all accessible and made them during breaks and applied finishing touches at home. I was really happy with the result l. They were octagonal, tapered and french polished. I still have them to this day.
I really like your video. For me your creation highlighted the beauty in ‘imperfection’ such as the organic form of your sticks which actually made them ‘perfect’. Your use of available materials such as the laces and sock were creative and inspiring, and entertaining.

I am not a professional carpenter but I did work with professional furniture makers and I learnt from them I also did some research for example to learn how to french polish my nunchucks. My inspiration was Bruce Lee and at the time I bought two books written by Japanese Authors who wee experts in Karate and weapons. That was in 1984 :)

Nowadays I’m more interested in finding a book by Hirokazu Kanazawa who designed a ‘health’ kata or form where the practitioner hits acupressure points around the body to stimulate energy flow and improve health... its seems to be difficult to find that book!

I love your videos! This is one of the best videos on home "nunchuck" construction. I started to make a pair this weekend. The only things left are to apply some finish, then string them up!

This brought back some memories. I had a friend who made me a wooden set but with a chain back in the mid 80's, then in the late 80's I found myself with a black metal set that I have absolutely NO recollection of where I got them from. A month ago I bought some more, wooden again, because that young teenager inside my mind (the body is nearly 47) said "Do it, you know you wanna!" Thanks for this. Think it's time I tried to be creative.

Thank you for this demonstration. You reminded me April 1989, when I worked at a construction site and made there a pair of nunchaks from broken shovel shaft, and then decorated it with carving, using for this pocket knife, which made it look more nice and my grip better. It great to remember such things. ;-)

I built several styles of these back in 1979-80. This is a great tutorial on building the traditional type. The only thing that I would add is to use some superglue on the cords where they are wrapped at the ends. It will make loosening an impossibility and there is no subsequent maintenance or concern. Another thing that I noticed you had done properly but didn't point out quite enough, is the bevel and sand the top hole in each stick. Sand it down to a very fine and smooth surface. Then the time it takes for the cord to smooth it down to a polished surface will result in minimal fraying of the cord. So I have a few sets of these that are now 40 years old, made with oak and nylon cord. I have used the heck out of them for that 40 years, and the cords are still strong and solid. Pretty amazing. Thanks for taking the time to make such a great video on the traditional build techniques for these. I've shown mine to my nephew and he asked me how I build them. I'll just send him a link to your video.

Great video and great re-use of down to earth materials.
Someone I read somewhere and have yet to try, is to use a finish of diesel fuel mixed with boiled linseed oil. I have used linseed oil miked with turpentine. It takes some time, maybe some weeks drying in the sun.

Shoelaces are best because they make your nunchucks feel humble, and feel like they are a part of you. Also, the shoelaces have aglets. The aglets make forcing the string easy through the hole.

I use to make em wen i was young using hardwood broom handle with a bit of weight but not too much
Mine look similar. I made and still.have 45+ years later. No finish just the oil from my hands broom handle.and para cord. I round the ends of each stick prevents splinters. The end holes I make larger so I can pull the knot down inside I then taper and polish the center holes this prevents wear on rope maybe a little wax . About 12 inches rope length allows enuff to hang over my wrist rope still good after 45 years. Back.from time of Bruce. No rubber chucks you got the hang of it or you did not.

you can still make your ovvn using chain. But look for the professioal svvivel bearing sets they have for sale , they vvont bind up or break like using a piece of chain like I used to. Also the bearing kits come in different lengths so you can make an affordable 3 section staff or a European type military flaill or morning star
