With a trailer that size on a half ton pickup you should really use weight distribution and sway control. That explains your sway over 60mph.

GM had a two-mode hybrid back in like 2009. It had a 6.0 V8 with a four-speed auto that had two electric motors in the transmission housing. They did the mild hybrid in 2017 like Ram's 2019 eTorque.

The 2Mode Hybrid was available 2009 thru '13 only on the Tahoe, Yukon, & Escalade short WB. Talked to a GMC engineer trying to understand why the Silverado & Sierra Hybrids were only marketed in limited markets and never came with a 8' bed, which put me out of being a buyer. But I am looking for Escalade Hybrid, used of course, for my wife.

I have the 2009 Silverado crew cab 4WD with the 6.0 L V8 and 2-mode hybrid. Bought it used In 2010 and have put >120k miles on it. I still get 17-18 mpg in the city and 19-20 mpg on the highway. Get 12-14 mpg towing a fully loaded 6x12 2-axle box trailer on the interstate. It’s been a great truck for me, but I will be in the market for a replacement in the next year or two. I have a diesel SUV, so am considering a Chevy/GMC with the 3 L I6 diesel.

Though I appreciate the thought of towing at a lower speed, I find with my 23' tri-toon boat, my 3.0 really struggles and is maxed out throttle at 70 mph on the highway. I do want to be able to maneuver and have some throttle left when towing. That is why I am looking a the overall higher hp and tq on the power boost ford. Really want 3/4 ton diesel but boy is it hard to find a deal on those and any kind of decent financing. Thanks for the info and insight! Really appreciate the channel!

Tim that is similar to my trailer I tow with my Colorado 4 cyl diesel. Love the diesel no screaming motor even when pulling a heavy load.
13mpg with that load sounds about right for the 3.0 litre.
The battery in the Ford with the twin turbo 3.5 is a great idea. Love all the power out back.
But Ford should of put a lot more battery in the truck 1.5 KW is way to small. It should have been at least 5KW
You feel it moving around because you should be using a weight distribution hitch with sway control.

False! Range Selection mode only can show you what gear you down shift to when say you are in 10th gear and you down shift to 9 or 8 etc. When starting from a stop you are always in first gear and the trans mission can go up to the gear you select but not any higher than the gear so in other words say you put the transmission at 6th gear. you start out in 1st gear and the transmission will go up to 6th but you have to push the plus button to go any higher.

Great video, I have a couple questions or comments though. It’s nice to see comparisons but why would we not compare diesels to diesels and gas to gas power trains? It would’ve been nice to see the Ford’s small powerstroke compared to the small duramax. Also, if we are going to be non-biased on reviews why don’t we mention the Silverado has the same trailer light check feature as the Ford. Conversely does the Ford have trailer data features you can plug into the infotainment system as the Silverado system contains? I enjoyed the video, keep up the good work.

The vehicle comparisons are really just based on what manufacturer loans I get each week. Sometimes the stars align and I get the perfect truck, but more often than not, I make do with what I get.

Right now diesel is more expensive than gas so I'm definitely getting the truck with the built in generator. Full disclaimer I own a Ford F 150 and 2 Cummins Rams. I won't contest the towing abilities of diesel engines as a general proposition. But here, the PowerBoost generates 570 lbs.ft. of torque which makes it such a great engine with which to tow. The GM straight 6 diesel engine, originally from Italy, only produces 460 lbs. ft. of torque. The GM engine might be smoother than the V6 from Ford, but the difference in torque permits the Powerboost to tow an additional 2,000 pounds. This one ton difference allows me to to buy and tow a medium size 5th wheel weighing 12,000 lbs. The GM diesel restricts me to a 9,300 lb. travel trailer or a small frame 5th wheel at best. Unless Ram, GM or Toyota come up with hybrid 6 cylinder turbos or V8s, without cylinder deactivation, (and with big battery generators), they all will be playing catch-up with Ford.

The Ford website states the power output of the Powerboost as the maximum output with a fully-charged battery. Do you know if this power is sustainable on a long hill climb in tow/haul mode? or does the system deplete the battery then just act like a normal Ecoboost and lose the extra hp and torque of the electric motor? Or is it possibly less because the Ecoboost in the hybrid has a lower output as is the case with the 3.3L in the Ford Explorer Hybrid.

The reason the Ford is so poor in towing MPG, has to do with the way the computer fuels and times the engine under boost. Because of low octane fuel, the ecu will fuel the engine really richly when under load, to prevent detonation. All these "eco turbo" gas engines, really are not "Eco", because whenever your right foot demands anything more than minimal power, out of necessity to prevent engine damage, the things really are gas hogs.

    • @CajunRulez
      @CajunRulez 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That's not my experience. I've had several V8s before I owned my 3.5 Ecoboost. Of course they burn more gas when the turbos spool up, and they will do so under just about any load, like you stated. But, I keep a close eye on MPGs as well as other details and I can say that overall the Ecoboost is still far more fuel efficient than any gas V8 I've ever owned or driven. The most obvious real world test for me, without any calculation or even looking at the truck's built-in MPG meter, is just how long I can go between fill ups. Quite often I just forget when my last stop at a station was. So yes, they burn more fuel under load, but still less, with the same driving habits, than a V8 in my experience.

The Hybrid system is way too small on the F-150 PowerBoost to be helpful under load, so it makes sense that Ford would have it disabled during towing. With only 1.5kW capacity in the battery, it would be depleted almost immediately when towing, and the constant high power draw and likely high power return going downhill would be very hard on the system.

I think the generator is a cool idea and for sure handy but it won't change the construction industry or camping.
Most of the time on an industrial or commercial site you can't even get close to the work. You may even be parked in a remote parking spot. On a residential site you may be lucky to get near by street parking so now what? Run 200' of cord? Plus if your powering a couple guys on the tools and have to run out, everyone is down. Camping would be handy but personally a portable Honda put far away in the bush or behind a wood pile is far more convenient. They come in many sizes and are quite affordable.
Don't get me wrong I would tick the option box if I was buying one but I would not be a decision maker for me. A portable generator is way more versatile.

I don’t use 87 octane in a lawn mower. To absolutely keep the potential detonation down under heavy loads you have to run higher octane.

I thought I misheard him, so I played it back...most new turbo engines you want to use 91 +

I tow my travel trailer maybe 20 days a year, I drive my truck 365 days a year. I'll take the day-to-day driving performance of the powerboost for all the time I'm not towing and suffer the lower gas mileage on those days when I am towing, plus I don't have to drag my generator with me when I'm camping off the grid.

I like the Ford EcoBoost RV truck but I get better gas mileage on my Ford V10 Motor home.

On them GM trucks the shifter must be in M (manual mode) in order to use the tap up/down buttons to see that gear number on the display, my RAM (2012 1500 column shifter) doesn't have the M on the dash but while in D you can tap the button on the shifter to display what gear your transmission in, the GM feature is more superior than that on my RAM plus the tow/haul mode button is integrated on the tip-end of the shifter while the RAM one is on the dash.

Warning check your ability to stop while compairing half tons and towing or just driving.
One of my 34 chevies braked really well.
My 89 1500 chevy only braked well with abs disengaged in 4 wheel drive for that modle year. Newer ones braked poorly...dealer said live with it.
My 2010 XTR ford came equipped with real brakes just like the 2006 34 chev and felt safe letting the kids and wife use it

Who towed better was the title not who has fun gadgets. The Silverado towed better with vastly better fuel economy. I've towed with an ecoboost before and the mpg more than doubled. My trip budget went down the shitter...never again. The 3.0 has my vote all the way

Most trailer tires are rated 65 mph maximum speed. States have their own speed limits for trailer towing. Most are 60 or 65 mph. You have to check each states towing laws. They also have laws regarding trailer tow mirrors too. I tow at 60 mph everywhere on the highways except in construction zones. I've towed with 1/2 ton F150 and 2500 GMC Savana van. The 3/4 ton is always better in high winds because of the load range E van tires vs P rated 1/2 ton radials. Much stiffer sidewalls at 80 psi inflation.
