Fernando Azevedo Thank you! Annie Lennox stoled this song and made it big, not at all as good as orignal. I remember being 19 or 20 back in 86 or 87 when this song was popular. They this song on U.S. radio too.
My first time hearing the original. I was busking the Annie Lennox version with my singer and someone stopped their car to listen to us and then called me over, gave me a twenty, and asked how i knew the song. I told him from Annie Lennox and he suggested i listen to the original. It's truly amazing! I'm going to have my singer listen to the original. Whoever you were sir, thanks for sending me to listen to this fabulous tune!
The Lover Speaks used to open for the Eurhythmics and Annie Lennox loved this song and wondered why it never garnered more attention. So when she struck out on her own, she asked them if she can cover it and they gave her permission wholeheartedly. There's no competition between them. They're all happy (both parties) that the song got out there and received the attention it deserved.
It was bit more than that. Dave Stewart started a record company I the 80's primarily picking up bands that had been signed by labels and then dripped after one album, on the basis that they must've had something may have been just unlucky. he signed TLS that's when she would have heard them. I used to know Dave Freeman yonks ago and he's a good bloke. the song is inspired by the book A Lover's Discourse by Roland Barthes.

I think it's important to say that The Lover Speaks worked on this song with one of the producers of David Stewart, the Annie Lennox's bandmate from Eurythmics. So Annie Lennox was aware of this song around the time is was produced and released, in the mid 80s. She liked it very much and she was puzzled that the song didn't do better in charts. The Lover Speaks actually released it twice as a single, but failed every time. So the third time it was Annie Lennox and it finally became a hit in 1995. 20 years later, in 2015, the singer from The Lover Speaks said that they were lucky that Annie Lennox did the cover and the song was appeciated as it should have been from the beginning.

So you did hear about this and was able to listen to it when it initially was released ? I really wished I'd heard of it then .. So many musical experiences not had. But was this in England where you heard it first?
I never realised this was on youtube. Just one of the best love songs ever. I am of a certain age now and listened to this endlessly in the late 80’s with many a broken heart. I bought the album on cassette in 1986 and still cherish it today. Bit scared to play it now incase it breaks. What a song though and much less known than Annie Lennox’s cover.
A friend I've known since the age of 4 visited me recently, and we had a night of 80s reminiscence. Which included me fishing out my old ghetto blaster, and us listening to cassette after cassette from that decade. (Some bought, some my recordings from the radio.) And do you know what.....this one came on, and I had a tear in my eye. One of the most emotive tracks of our lifetimes surely?
Probably my favourite song of the 80s. One of the most crystal clear productions i have ever heard. I have never warmed to Annie Lennox's version - incredible singer though she may be.
Lyrics: I used to be lunatic From the gracious days I used to be woebegone And so restless nights My aching heart would bleed For you to see Oh but now ... (I don't catch myself Bouncing home whistling Buttonhole tunes to make me cry) No more "I love you's" Language is leaving me No more "I love you's" Language is leaving me exiled No more "I love you's" Changes are shifting me outside the words I used to have demons In my room at night Desire, despair, desire So many monsters Oh but now ... (I don't catch myself Bouncing home whistling Buttonhole tunes to make me cry) No more "I love you's" Language is leaving me No more "I love you's" Language is leaving me exiled No more "I love you's" Changes are shifting me outside the word No more "I love you's" Language is leaving me
@@dshmechanicI know I'm very late replying to you, but it is "exiled" in this original, and I think that's a better lyric. It's always bugged me a bit that Annie Lennox changed it for her version - I don't know whether that was deliberate or she just misheard it.
You cannot replicate the howls of a man in pain about love. The original was covered for this reason she recognized the raw emotion and art in his voice. It is unmatched.
I absolutely love the soundscape. It fits right alongside Cocteau Twins, The Go-Betweens, Echo & The Bunnymen, Book of Love. This track, namely this version, should've been big.
WLIR was and always will be the greatest Radio Station of all time on Long Island! They played this song all the time. By far the best version! Brings back many memories! ❤it!
Annie keeps it true to the original. Used to hear this song every night at 8pm while working at Carls Jr. I was going through it, but this song brought me through it. There were other songs, but this one in particular made me feel okay about being alone in my struggle. It made me realize and accept that no loved me. And I was okay with that.
This is the first time I've ever heard, or even knew there WAS, the original version. And my God, do I love it 😍 It's rare that I prefer a version of a song after I've heard one I'm used to (if that makes sense) but I DO prefer this!! That 80s nostalgia is hitting. I also love Annie Lennox but this does something different to me ❤️
The 80s were so brilliant ...often think they happened to give us something to look back on in the 20s of just how good we had it...R.I.P the 80s you are sorely missed...🙏😞
Probably because Annie's version is more popular than the original ?... or the original artists have not given their consent to be on a streaming service ?... have you thought about those possibilities ?
i@@knoxyish it's matter of preference, others think Annie's version is better, the original version peaked at #58 when it was released and only in the UK, while Annie's version peaked at #2 in the UK and was in the top 10 in many other countries, not to mention that the work with the video clip is fantastic and it got excellent reviews. As you can see, it's matter of taste
For me, originals can't be beaten. And, as much as I like the Lennox version, this track just proves it to me again. Lennox.....yours is good. 7/10. But this gets 10/10 every single time....
@@Matthew9818 The whole production is just more atmospheric with this original (well, IMHO anyway) and that kind of tallies with what you're saying. And, yeah, despite what I wrote a couple of years ago, I can instantly think of one cover I prefer over the original. So my old comment is null and void! ;-)
This song makes me imagine I'm a child waking up sick at 5AM in the early 2000s with this playing on our old radio set... having parents who grew up in the 80s is a wild trip
I have known this song since when it came out... it was put back in mind of course when Annie Lennox did a cover, which did nothing to me but long for hearing the original... but only just now I looked up the lyrics. Wow. Talk about impact... so emotional! There are a hundred ways to put a heartbreak to words, but this is special. "A language is leaving me". Profound!
Pity this isn't on streaming. The cover might have found a bigger audience but this is the definitive, IMO. I prefer the rawness of his vocals and production over Annie Lennox's.
To this day it remains unique and mesmerising song. As for Annie Lennox cover, all else considered, she deserves big kudos for eventually getting the song the exposure, recognition and commercial success the original release deserved back in the day.
Absolutely epic. A fantastically produced song that just blows me away every time after all these years. Seriously, one of the best songs ever written and performed (but not by Annie Lennox, thank you very much). @@gabrielcruz5858 🎉 much o pff
probably overcoming the "first-heard"-bias ;)
Lennox has the voice for it but she can't relay Lovers experiences and motivation for the song.
@@TheZarric 😏
THIS SONG JUST MAKES MY BORING LIFE ALIVE!!!!!! BRINGS BACK MY LONG LOST YOUTH!!!! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
best comment i read today, cheers brother!
Jethro Roissing Brings back great memories for me also
😊
I bought this when it came out. I still have the single.
One of the best songs to come out of the 80’s.
So painfully sung. Beautiful poetry from the heart.
This song is the EPITOME of the late 80's. I'll NEVER forget this song. It's in me forever. So beautiful!
So you did hear about this and was able to listen to it when it initially was released ? I really wished I'd heard of it then .. So many musical experiences not had. But was this in England where you heard it first?
God - TRULY a masterpiece!
The original and best
Brilliant. Takes me back to working in Vauxhalls luton 1986 sitting in a new Cavalier with the radio on and this came on. Memories
Lyrics:
I used to be lunatic
From the gracious days
I used to be woebegone
And so restless nights
My aching heart would bleed
For you to see
Oh but now ...
(I don't catch myself
Bouncing home whistling
Buttonhole tunes to make me cry)
No more "I love you's"
Language is leaving me
No more "I love you's"
Language is leaving me exiled
No more "I love you's"
Changes are shifting me outside the words
I used to have demons
In my room at night
Desire, despair, desire
So many monsters
Oh but now ...
(I don't catch myself
Bouncing home whistling
Buttonhole tunes to make me cry)
No more "I love you's"
Language is leaving me
No more "I love you's"
Language is leaving me exiled
No more "I love you's"
Changes are shifting me outside the word
No more "I love you's"
Language is leaving me
I've seen "the gracious days" also, but I think he's singing, I used to be lunatic from "your precious face." (Also, you can his lips in the video.)
*read his lips
The language is leaving me in silence, not exiled.
@@dshmechanicI know I'm very late replying to you, but it is "exiled" in this original, and I think that's a better lyric. It's always bugged me a bit that Annie Lennox changed it for her version - I don't know whether that was deliberate or she just misheard it.
The original...fantastic. Thanks for posting!
You cannot replicate the howls of a man in pain about love. The original was covered for this reason she recognized the raw emotion and art in his voice. It is unmatched.
So glad I found this original version so powerful and heartfelt. Love it.
Same
Me too
The original and the best
Wowww! I have never heard the original until today. I was 17 when this came out and wish I had discovered it back then.
I'm so old I have the vinyl record Tonester. It was a picture disc, all the rave then haha.
And I loathe the Annie Lennox version.Actually, I just bloody loathe Annie Lennox. The shouty screech.
Not old Lorraine Cleaver..."Mature"...like finely aged wine:)
Exactly
Yeah, she does look so leftist ... can't stand her crazy demeanour
Bought this when it first came out on 45. Fantastic song and should be played much more. Shame it’s not on Spotify
Spotify is complete shite. No one should sign up to it.
This is pure gold masterpiece
I absolutely love the soundscape. It fits right alongside Cocteau Twins, The Go-Betweens, Echo & The Bunnymen, Book of Love. This track, namely this version, should've been big.
WLIR was and always will be the greatest Radio Station of all time on Long Island! They played this song all the time. By far the best version! Brings back many memories! ❤it!
The fact that this video only has 164,000 hits is criminal
Agreed
Quality not quantity, but yes agreed.
One of the best 80's songs
80s and 90s. annies cover is on medusa.
agree.
Bought the album when it came out. Im 61 now and this is is still brilliant.
I also love Annie Lennox but this does something different to me ❤️
Best song of the 80s.
This rises to the level of art. Wow. And the video is the essence of grit.
Can't go wrong with Matt Mahurin.
The whole album is just brilliant.great lyrics to all songs.
One of the most underrated songs of the 80's
The 80s were so brilliant ...often think they happened to give us something to look back on in the 20s of just how good we had it...R.I.P the 80s you are sorely missed...🙏😞
How come Annie Lennox's version is on spotify but not the original song? 🤦🏼♀️ nothing beats the original and they deserve their credit
Concordo plenamente com vc
Uma vibe anos oitenta talvez não seja tão interessante quando se tem o pop,@@osielmessias3126
especailly when this is better than annies!!! easily !
The original is way more raw in emotion than Annie Lennox cover.. Can't stop listening to it,, Amazing vocals
For me, originals can't be beaten. And, as much as I like the Lennox version, this track just proves it to me again.
Lennox.....yours is good. 7/10.
But this gets 10/10 every single time....
Lee71England . In some cases covers are better but in this case I personally have too say I feel the lyrics and meaning more with this version .
@@Matthew9818 The whole production is just more atmospheric with this original (well, IMHO anyway) and that kind of tallies with what you're saying.
And, yeah, despite what I wrote a couple of years ago, I can instantly think of one cover I prefer over the original. So my old comment is null and void! ;-)
Obsessed with this song.
A wonderful forgotten gem
This song makes me imagine I'm a child waking up sick at 5AM in the early 2000s with this playing on our old radio set... having parents who grew up in the 80s is a wild trip
Do be do be do do do …. Aaah Aaaah. Legend 👌🏻
Adore the backup singer - goosebumps
Juventus Ventuno good point, I wonder who sang that little hook? Goosebumps city
Juventus Ventuno just found out from wiki June miles Kingston sang backup!!
The album these guys made was also a fantastic piece of work, pity they never got the commercial recognition their talent deserved
Thanks to Lennox’s version because without that I could never found this gem 😊
This is in my vinyl collections. So many memories.
What an amazing voice.
Totally underrated song
Agreee, it got stuck in my head now
A shame this song wasn't a huge hit
What a voice, wow!
an original masterpiece
......the lover speaks about the monsters
Takes me back to central coast california mid-80s. MTV. Remember MTV?
@SuperDolphin 1313 --We gotta move these refrigerators.
When it was originally released, I taped it and played it in my Ford Escort...and damn nearly blew the speakers.
My sister got to know the man who wrote this song some years before she eventually took her own life... This song really hits me hard in the feels. I've never heard the original until today. Such a tragically beautiful song.
Really sorry about your sister mate. May she be at peace always.
Very sorry for your loss. Hopefully she is singing this song.
I'm sorry to hear this. Was this Lisa? I knew David too many years ago, what an complex man. Please accept my sympathies.
Good God all these years. And what a fantastic original and what a video. Criminal how this is not a classic. Well in a way it is a classic.
Without doubt one of the best contempory songs ever written. Have love this band for 30 years [my goodness I'm old but still feel 22 ,whats going on lol]]
I was 15 and now 52 still love this! Thank you
Awesome. Why has it taken me till 2020 to discover this gem 💎
I had the album cover poster framed in my home in ‘86 when it came out. There was a British radio show that played for I think a couple of hours every Sunday night 10-midnight, I believe. I recorded it every week, cassette of course, LOL!being from Oklahoma City there was no other way to here about The Lover Speaks, Kate Bush and the even played Joy Division even though Ian had already taken his life years earlier. It was a great time to be young! XTC was legal, 18 to drink! Wonderful memories!!
Loving this. Prefer this to Annie's version. Great vocals. Great songwriting
I agree.original perfect Don't like Annie's version.
I like them both
The days when good music was played on the radio making your working day good ...so glad my late teens were in the 80s ..love this original version ...
I have become obsessed with this song. I love it!
What a beautiful 80s gem ! After tracking down the rare album I also found that I love every single track of it ! Brings back so many nice memories... Thank you TLS for this music.... sooo beautiful 😍👍👍
I bought the album back in the 80's and like you, loved every track. I was going through my tapes last week and it's not there😭😭😭
@@izadoru What a pityful thing ! I feel so sorry for you. Seriously. I remember many years ago I wanted to have the album ripped as mp3 but in those days it was not so easy, and the CD was not available - so I announced this request in my company and finally found someone who offered me to rip my vinyl record. Though I had to pay him 50 DM for that job (about 25 EURO or maybe 30 US$) it was really worth. Today I own the CD anyway, but in those days I owned a treasure then.
Hearing this for the first time in 2024 after learning Annie's version is a cover. This is an awesome song!
Bought the single when it was first released. Wonderful song - wish one of the streaming services would pick it up. The original and still the best...
I think I still have the 12 inch single of this. It never leaves my 80's playlist. Supremely good song.
this is the best version unquestionably - there ought to be no debate
My dad bought this single and whilst everyone was marvelling at Annie Lennox I knew I preferred the songwriters version.
The original and the BEST ❤
The only version for me, always loved this, gives me chills ❤the original.
