Funny thing about adding the capability to do work that you've never gotten called for before: your odds of getting that call go up significantly, because once word gets out in the industry, you'll start getting calls from other operators to sub onto jobs where they could use it. Sure, they could tow a buckled trailer by bringing in a crew to unload it for 4 hours on the side of the road and then splint the whole thing back together with chains and binders and big chunks of angle iron, or they could call you and chill for 3 hours while you drive over the mountain. Being a small truck mechanic, I've never learned more about big trucks than watching your channel. I saw one of those spring brake tools in someone's tool box once, now I finally know what it is.
Not being a truck guy I know very little about exactly how the different brake components work on their air system. Thanks so much for taking the time to explain it. Knowledge is power 👍
The ONLY problem I see with Option #1 is a second set of 4 wheels in the centre of a trailer (or truck) is going to make it difficult (?impossible) to turn corners in the road. But i dont know enough.
Be interesting if you could make the flat top use the slider pins so you could make different tops for it if needed. Also to retain the king pin, could you use pins like the under reach adapters have for retaining standard trailers? Be nice if they were on springs so you don’t have to crawl under to put them in place.
Good sir I use to hav a part time job driving heave wrecker only going to get salvage equipment. 99% was from ups as the place had the contract to crush all their package cars, trailers and road tractors and spotting trucks for a particular state. I built a dolly just like you’re going to make. It’s like you read my mind. It worked great after a bit of adding stuff here and there. I will say add MANY d rings front back and sides different angles. Many reasons but the #1 for me was like you said if almost broken in half I could place dolly ( I was the only truck so no using 2 trucks and my stuff was always empty) you could run chains under the trailer pulled tight and blocked up to create a Tyler of frame to keep it all together on the trip back.
Just for fun and “training purposes”, your bus is completely on its roof, you don’t have the time and/or space to roll it over, you pick it up and set it on the dolly and tow it around the yard upside down. May be fun. Not sure where you would chain sling to being upside down but you never know, it could happen…
So the new ZackLift wheel grids are perfect for picking up new toys er projects!!!! Very slick way to pickup the wheel set to back it into place. Can’t wait to see you do the build and then use the new dolly!!!!

Your caging bolt explanation brought back some memories. We used to have 1985 to 1994 Flxible buses, along with 1998 and 2000 Gilligs with the separate bolts. We used whatever brand of chamber was the cheapest. 3 different caging bolts, so odds were that you'd have the 2 with you that you didn't need. Currently the only buses we have left that use those are some 2010 Gilligs. Our 2013 and newer New Flyers are disc brake buses, and have that new style can like on your UPS dolly. Those are way more convenient. No more searching for bolts, or finding the attached bolt hopelessly rusted into place in the little holder on the side of the can. Although FWIW I try to put air to the can so I can free run the bolt, which I can do 98% of the time, since most of my work is inside the garage. The other 2% is a bad can or rubbed through air line out on the street. Sometimes I can remove the air line and use a rubber tipped blow gun to take the load off the caging bolt.
The explanation of the different brake pods was interesting - and it gives a far better level of understanding to what you deal with daily. Thanks, Casey!!
Im not sure how old you are but you have years of experience on you im in my late 50s and been in trucking since my late 20s even ran a tow truck but I continue to learn things from watching you keep up the good work
Couldn't you just pick-up the dolly and extend your under ride lift all the way out and carry the dolly instead of towing it. You might need a bracket on one axle to set on the extendable part for tie down. Just a thought. Might keep the tires from getting flat spots while braking.
Casey, just a thought. before you install the flat plate, why not take the front axle and flip it around so that the brake pods are directed outward. this way when you need to cage the brakes on that axle, your not having to crawl between the tandems to access those pots. So long as the slacks aren't going to try adjusting them selves tighter on you when in operation since those wheels would be rotating backwards most of the time. doing this would only require a set of longer brake hoses to reach the valves.
Good video ! idea for you - if u misplace the trailer light bar occasionally. Put a Apple Air tag on it & Mark it to notify you if " Left behind " mode. That way if you drive away from it , it tells you it's " Left behind. "
my buddy in Montana with SweetRides Towing just build a low ride dolly and it works good he moved a container the other day he posted where it was too tall for a bridge he used dolly on and rolled through with cantainer low as a lowboy trailer
Good to have the right tools for the job. I had the right tools, but sometimes they were home in the garage. I could always picture exactly where they were setting right where I left them.😂

I enjy your explainations of how the equipment works for you. I would like to see a video where you go over the process and cost of maintaining the Western Star tractor. It would be interesting for those of us who don't know about that side of the business to see.
Once you build it, You will need it at least 3 times. Then you won't touch it again for years. Have 2 sitting in the weeds right now. used 1 about 2 months ago, last used 2 years ago. You could change theair brake system to the old style or lowboy style, Where if it doesn't have air the park brake is off. Then just drain the air to release or hook up air lines to have brakes. You would have to change all the chambers to singles. Most of your convertor dolly's (fed-ex, UPS) are set up that way so you can move them by hand.
That flat top dolly is a great idea. We always had 3 or 4 ups and fed ex converter dollys around when theyd call with bent up axles. Just grab their own equipment and rescue their shit😂😂😂
I have 3 zacklifts and I will never buy another one again. Parts are crazy priced and complicated to work on. I enjoy your videos Casey stay safe brother.
It would be nice to have a battery operated impact wrench. Back when I was trucking, it was only a 3/4" inch wrench and lots of hand cranking but I'm sure Casey's had lots of that too. Good buy. Thanks for the video.
Hey Casey, on the off chance you see this: a flatbed under the frame rails will mean there are two sets of frame rails between the dolly axles and the bottom of the trailer instead of one. The Factory axles at the back of the buckled trailer will be floating in the air. I don't have a solution to that, just sayin.
Did not know you had those medical problems casey. From one tow truck driver to another I hope it does set you back in life! By the videos looks like you have the bull by the horns!
If you cut a piece of the pool noodle so it will stand up snugly between the glass tray and the top of the microwave it will hold nice and snug, just wedge it in there.
7 states ain’t bad, that’s what I’ve gotten this month. I run western 11 but some months I barely get out of California. I sorta miss coast to coast but the east coast is nasty if you get stuck out there, crazy traffic, crazy people.
The code may have changed but I used to haul two 20's and a 40 foot containers on my 53 foot trailer out of Portland and Seattle to Idaho right through Oregon. I had 10 foot of overhang on the front and 17 foot of overhang on the back. Went through all the POE with no issues. Things must be different now. It's been more than a minute.
Feel for you Casey, got digestive issues myself and have to avoid most veggies too. Not like you, those veggies wouldn't potentially send me to the hospital, but a tablespoon of lettuce will have me doubled over in pain for three days. Not worth it is right.

What a cute dog.
Cool vid, interesting. Oh, and about the broccoli..., you're not missing anything.
That is a great idea and if you don't use it you can rent it out to other tow companies that might need it in a bad accident 😅
So many fun projects going on... not that I'm jelly or anything!! 🤪
YOU are the "KING" of market place !
That flat top dolly is a great idea. We always had 3 or 4 ups and fed ex converter dollys around when theyd call with bent up axles. Just grab their own equipment and rescue their shit😂😂😂
You explain things ever so well!! If I ever needed something to sell I'll be sure to call you haha the way you explain things you can sell anything!!😮
I would love to see some bridge hauling videos on the channel!!
You said Blazer! Yay!
31:53 right side 2 hole and 32:07 left side 1 hole on the scoops? Different tyre size on the dolly?
@@0o9ijnbhytgr nope. Just how it sat when I hooked it up
Hey Casey, on the off chance you see this: a flatbed under the frame rails will mean there are two sets of frame rails between the dolly axles and the bottom of the trailer instead of one. The Factory axles at the back of the buckled trailer will be floating in the air. I don't have a solution to that, just sayin.
Nope, that’s not how it works
Thanks for the lesson 😊
Did not know you had those medical problems casey. From one tow truck driver to another I hope it does set you back in life! By the videos looks like you have the bull by the horns!
Practice on your field goals lol that was a good one! You truly like that Zak lift wheel grids!
Best factor promo ever
If you cut a piece of the pool noodle so it will stand up snugly between the glass tray and the top of the microwave it will hold nice and snug, just wedge it in there.
The cut noodle can fall over.
I learned a lot today Casey!
Thank you!
7 states ain’t bad, that’s what I’ve gotten this month. I run western 11 but some months I barely get out of California. I sorta miss coast to coast but the east coast is nasty if you get stuck out there, crazy traffic, crazy people.
Image searched for "semi flat top dolly" and the blue and red one I think is the one you're talking about, cool.
So Many fine projects , So many good ideas . Thank You for explaining things
Great video Casey. Very informative. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
I enjoy the innovation!
The other factor..
Used and in great shape is a Heck of a lot cheaper than a brand new dollie that you will have to modify.
Feel for you Casey, got digestive issues myself and have to avoid most veggies too. Not like you, those veggies wouldn't potentially send me to the hospital, but a tablespoon of lettuce will have me doubled over in pain for three days. Not worth it is right.
