  • Today we're looking at five of my favorite office friendly outfits and breaking down my no fail work wardrobe tips. I've included my simple do's and don'ts that I plan my work outfits by and I hope they are helpful for you as well.
    Outfit 1:
Off white sleeveless jacket with pencil skirt with slits. Pair this with an off white blazer for a monochromatic look that’s sleek and elongating. I’m wearing with nude pointed toe shoes and simple jewelry.
Sleeveless jacket and skirt: White House Black Market
    Blazer: Ann Taylor
    Shoes: Jimmy Choo
    Outfit 2:
Black pant suit with crisp white button down shirt. Perfect for a job interview. Pair with black patent pumps and a black briefcase style handbag.
    Suit: Ann Taylor
    Shirt: White House Black Market
    Shoes: Ralph Lauren
    Bag: Tory Burch
    Outfit 3:
Black sleeveless sheath dress. High neck and just above the knee. Can work as a stand alone piece or can brighten up with a red scarf and red blazer. Add black glasses with black pumps.
    Dress: White House Black Market
    Blazer: Boston Proper
    Scarf: A gift
    Glasses: Armani
    Shoes: Ralph Lauren
    Outfit 4:
Red cap sleeve sheath dress. Slightly lower neckline but no cleavage showing, also hits right at knee. Slenderizing yet adds a pop of color
    Dress: Black Halo
    Shoes: Jimmy Choo
    Outfit 5:
Gray Pencil skirt with blouse. Pair a straight fitting, knee length skirt with this season’s must have, a blush colored blouse, soft and airy. It’s not as serious as a suit, but still has a corporate flair while maintaining femininity.
    Skirt: Ralph Lauren
    Blouse: Theory
    Shoes: Jimmy Choo
    Bag: Dolce Gabbana
    Must Haves...
A black and off-white suit, either a pant suit or with a skirt
A crisp, white button down shirt that’s fitted
    A red jacket or blazer
One black and one colorful sheath dress with high neckline that hits just above the knee
Soft blouses with neckties or subtle prints
One gray and one navy pencil skirt that comes to the knee
    One decorative scarf
One briefcase/handbag in either black or neutral
Closed toe pumps with pointed toe in black and nude
    Subtle jewelry
    Black glasses
    Sophisticated hair style
    Nude nail polish or red
    Clean and corporate make-up application
    Spanx
    Stay Away From...
    Low necklines
    Busy patterns
    Short skirts
    Clothes that are too tight
    Knits if you’re large chested
    Too much jewelry
    Overly bright make-up
    Overly teased hair
    Sandals
    Jeans
Nail polish colors that are too trendy
    Underwear lines

I think you should mention to your subscribers that.....probably just as important as the articles of clothing are....remember to keep everything properly altered, PRESSED (no wrinkles!!!!) ironed, dry cleaned, laundered. There's nothing worse than a rumpled outfit...scuffed shoes, unkempt hair and makeup! All of the above reflects on how you feel about yourself and therefore how you are presenting yourself to the public....whether going to the grocery store or applying for a new position. And MOST importantly...A BIG SMILE IS ALWAYS IMPORTANT!!

True, I've noticed that I am getting a little lax on the details. My shoes are in good order but I need to polish them a bit more and even though I air dry my work pants, they could probably use a light pressing. Thanks for the post.

The shoe maintenance is key to polish, remove scuffs, nicks and small tears on heels of pumps, replace heel protectors, etc.

Excellent message! At work, I make so many decisions and was overwhelmed trying to decide what to wear everyday. So, I went the Steve Jobs route; I have one dress for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and another for Tuesdays and Thursdays. Multiples of the same dress, of course 😊. I chose nicely structured pieces that are machine-washable. So easy.

This video made my day. Something I'm routinely working to perfect - my corporate wardrobe. I have found that alterations are also a key part of finishing a polished look. Buying quality clothing is also important - no matter the price point - since timeless looks enable a wardrobe to last a decade or more. An additional note to other women in the workforce that I've learned is invest in shoes that you can feel comfortable walking in an airport for work. I don't wear skirts, either - again, more of a choice of comfort. It takes effort and time to find a wardrobe that is comfortable and polished, but completely achievable. I'll also add that I am plus-size, so no excuses there - just learn how to find clothes that bring proportion to your individual body shape.
The biggest issue I cant seem to conquer is how to organize for business travel. I have the slim laptop, a few business folders, and all but eliminated toiletries as carry-on, yet purses still tend to get very heavy very quickly. I always check a bag rather than be concerned that I'm missing something for my wardrobe. I'd love to see ideas from you Dominique on how you carry work materials for travel as well!

This video put me on White House Black Market, 2 years later I am still obsessed. Black Halo went over my head the first time I watched this video, OMG I’m obsessed with Black Halo for work dresses. The neckline of most of their dresses are to die for! Love you Dom 💕🌸

I have a suggestion for you and the other ladies. It doesn't take a lot of sewing talent. I noticed the lovely blouse you were wearing was gaping in between the buttons. My mother in law taught me to sew small snaps in between the buttons to stop the gaping. It works in keeping the fabric flat. I love you and hope you are not offended.

I do the same -- sometimes it's about the manufacturer and how far they space the buttons apart, not just about the size of the chest.

    • @gltkob

I agree, the button spacing is often an issue. I am busty and have to be very mindful of spacing!

Maggie Pentland absolutely agree. Must be careful to spaces between the buttons. The blouse is lovely but is ruined by the noticeable gaps. I either close the gaps or I wear a chemise underneath so that no bra shows. Cheers.

Excellent, Dominique. I cannot agree more. I've been working in the financial sector for more than twenty years, and your guidelines are exactly the ones most of the women lived by. As you said, the better dressed, the faster people appeared to get ahead. Clothes make people, as a known word of mouth says.

Having retired and, unfortunately, had a few health problems and gained some weight, I have slipped into the sloppy/relaxed mode of dress, i.e., athletic pants and t-shirts. I would appreciate, as others have noted below, a casual and easy wardrobe for home and errand running with low-to-no-heel shoes and some style. Thanks for all you do to keep us on our toes and glowing!

This is helpful for everyone. I'm on our local Farm Bureau board of directors. This past Tuesday was our turn to go to our State Capitol. So,my usual jeans and T-shirt wouldn't have worked. I agree with what you said about our appearance. My Mom worked as a bank teller my whole life growing up. You pretty much hit on everything she always said about wardrobe.

Fantastic video!! EXACTLY what I was looking for. Re-entering the workforce (long story) and I need to re-invent myself and make myself over. I needed this for my new corporate look! I literally just bought a black pantsuit with white collared shirt yesterday, two blouses and I have two knee length pencil skirts and a new scarf. A step in the right direction. I have black patent and grey pumps - I will have to get some nude. Also THANK YOU for mentioning appropriate handbag. I needed to know what kind of handbag works in a corporate setting. I also have curly (often frizzy) hair so keeping it pulled back in a bun is what I was thinking for a professional look so I am so so glad to see that is exactly what you did. Jewellery minimal.... have noticed that you keep your earrings small and classy so will do same. Thank you so much please keep posting these amazing videos!! (now if I can just figure out how to properly apply makeup, I'll be okay). LOL

Hi Dominique, great advice for new professionals or those who want to get ahead. One added tip... Hollywood Fashion Tape. Use it to keep blouses from gaping open (like your pink one), keep wrap dresses where they're supposed to be, bra straps under tops, etc. I'd probably even use it on that red dress to make sure the neckline didn't pucker or gape and inadvertently show more skin since it has the V-neck. Really enjoy your videos!

This video is worth as much as their degree in many cases, for women entering the work force. No one could teach this as well as you did in this video. Oh, so very many girls and women need this edge. It doesn't escape away with the excuse of being too expensive, either. These basics can be followed no matter where one buys ones clothes. I hope you'll do more videos like this one, targeting a different or wider demographic. I really enjoyed this!

Dressing for the job you want, vs the job you, have is a real thing. You don't have to spend a bundle to look great either -- best of luck with Chapter 2!

Awesome video! Please do a video on how to make your Pumps comfortable. I hate wearing flats or super low heels with a pencil skirt, but comfort helps on a busy day!

Love the white on white. Such a great suggestion! Please do another like this soon for the summer. Maybe something a little more casual, but still appropriate for the c-suite.

i just stumbled onto your channel. I'm a new subscriber. I enjoy everthing I have viewed. The very nextvday after watching a make up tutorial EVERYONE at work noticed. I received sooo many compliments. I ve always worn make up. I didn't come into work with this big face full of cosmetics that my coworkers were not used too. So it was amazing to me what a beautiful difference a few changes made.
Also a few days later I got a very dramatically different hair cut. So with the new hair and better make up I'm hearing "OMG you look 10 yrs younger"
Wish I had found you sooner lol Thank you.
You gave me the boost I needed.

Excellent video Dominique! You know times really haven't changed that much as far as dressing for success in the workplace. I was in the banking industry back in the 80's and 90's and I always dressed in the classic business attire and I always felt confident with my look. The only thing I would add to the "stay away" list is to take it down a notch on the perfume. Nothing worse than being overwhelmed by someone's scent of the day. Thank you - you look very beautiful in all your outfits.

Very nice video and I love the outfits and the knowledge of information. You are absolutely correct on everything that you stated in this video. Being professional and classy is important not only at work but your everyday life. You never know who you might meet at your local grocery store, gas station, nail shop, restaurant, mall etc. could be your new boss lol. Always look and dress the part.

My mom had red hair, and extremely pale skin with tons of freckles, so people had always told her she couldn't wear red. They were mistaken. Toward the end of her life she discovered that a burgundy red was really flattering to her, and it still gave a pop of color to her outfit. If you think you can't wear red ladies, try all the different shades of this fun color, and search for the one that makes you feel that you're best flattering your skin tone.

Thank you for emphasizing modesty and class. I'm shocked at how many women in a supposedly professional work place like to stuff their cleavage in everybody's face. It's not just immodest, it's trashy.

I totally agree with you. It is so distracting too. It is not something you force others to notice, but so many people do. I feel very uncomfortable when my son or husband is with me.

Another thing to keep in mind: regardless of colour, ALWAYS KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE. There are 2 tones for almost or every colour: warm undertone and cool undertone. So wearing the wrong one could make a person look "not right". For example, a cool undertone can look too pale or sick if he or she is wearing outfits of warm tones. So that's something to watch out for.
    Great video. 👍🏻
