Excellent tip and unbelievably easy. Will use this in the future!! Thank you ! Just used this tip today on a couple new squirrel tails . This worked wonderfully thank you again for the tip !!
What a remarkable difference in the appearance between the two tails and then their similarity after you applied the blow dryer to the unkempt tail. Marvelous & simple. Thank you.
Fantastic tip! I have only been tying for about a year-and-a-half, and your tutorials have helped me so much. I can’t thank you enough! Every good wish from West Texas.
Great Video! Only one problem. When a 50 something bald guy buys a hair dryer and some fingernail polish people have got to wonder...🤣 Been loving your style of tying for many years! Appreciate all the tips.
Never tried a blow dryer on squirrel tails, will give it a go. I prepare my own squirrel tails by removing the bone, pinning it flat and curing with borax powder (a detergent). If you comb and brush the hair out (almost perpendicular to the tail) while it is fresh the hair will set that way making it very convenient for tying. Treating the tail with a hair bleaching kit yields some interesting results. Depending on how much solution and how long it is left on you get different shades of "blonde" with some markings still visible.
I use squirrel tail a lot and I will be doing this from now on. Every day is a school day, I can't believe how simple that was, but what a difference it made is unbelievable. I might even try pressing them afterwards to see if they keep their shape. But then is there any point cause it only takes a a minute to do them before you start. Right have to rush I have tails to blow dry 😃
Отличная техника работы с материалом. У меня лежит хвост белки давно купил. Что то делать с ним пока не решился. Ещё бы мухи показать с применением этого матерьяла. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
You can use them as a hair wing for streamers like the gierach special or the little trout series. Here in the states, I use it for clousers for many species. You can even add a little squirrel to a bucktail streamer to give it a unique look. Blend it in, layer it, or I like putting just a very small bit of dyed green squirrel on top of a chartreuse streamer, like you would peacock herl. The very base of the tail is often good dubbing material for nymphs, very buggy.
Hi @jcb202. You can use them, especially the tail as you just have to allow it to dry and give it a good wash and it will be fine..I'm glad you found the video helpful.. All the very best Davie
Hi Dominique, I'm not doing much at the moment as our seasons for trout and salmon are closed at the moment so whenever they open I'll be out and about and I hope to do a little filming as well throughout the season...I'm glad you like the video.. All the very best Davie..
Hi Davie, I take it that you would dye your own tails. I have quite a bit of trouble getting the tails to take a colour normally involves me having to do them twice to take the colour any advice? Or maybe a video on how you would do it. Regards dean
Hi Dean, I would give the tails a good wash first and then put them straight in from the wash so that the dye takes straight away though I've had to put a few feathers and hair over the years back in to get the colour I want.. All the very best Davie..
Awesome tip as always Davie👌, I had a response to a comment I had made while you wished everyone a happy 2022, the response comment came through this morning claiming to be your good self, I wanted to let you know as I feared that your TH-cam account has been hacked, I hope this is not the case.
Hi dongil123, I found out this morning that someone had opened an account using my name and photo, I have blocked them as well as reported them to TH-cam so hopefully they should sort it out..I've not been hacked so if you see anything please let me know as I'll delete it from the channel and thank you for letting me know.. All the very best Davie
@@DavieMcPhail That's great to know you have not been hacked, apart from the reply I had noticed that the spelling was not correct that's good you reported and blocked. Kind regards, Michael.
Hi Robert, I do as it does dye easily though give them a wash first before you do this and if you feel the hair is dry use some hair conditioner as this will soften it.. All the very best Davie
Hi Richard, I'm sorry you can't hear the video too well as I'm not sure why as it seems ok this side though I do use the hairdryer midway through it to get the hair to sit.. All the very best Davie..
Excellent tip Davie. I’ve been tying my own flies for lots of years and it just goes to show there are still techniques to be learnt. Thank you.

Natural squirrel is often used as a substitute for teal
squirrel blue and silver, seatrout killer

Very helpful video. We are seeing a lot of grey squirrels coming to grief on the roads. Are they able to be used? Thanks, Davie.

Will this work when I'm fishing?!!
Thanks Davie. Do you ever dry your own skins, or just buy them in?
Hi Steve,
I have dried a couple of small skins and wings many years ago but I prefer to buy them as they are far cleaner..
All the very best Davie
Do you dye squirrel tail? Is it easy?
