Today I went to Switzerland to check out the most 'boring' derby in the world as we saw FC Basel take on FC Zürich. Would it live up to the stories I was told or would it be incredible? Let's find out!

FCB-FCZ is actually not really a Derby, its more like a super big rivalry since ages!
Right, it's a classic, more in the direction of Dortmund vs Bayern or Liverpool vs Manchester United as the rivalry between the two cities transcends football

Was there for the same match on the 26th of september, 2021, and I can confidently say it was one of the BEST ATMOSPHERES I've ever seen. We were also treated to a goalfest as Basel won 3-1 and played with a beautiful blackout kit at home. Got my hands on the last shirt on store as well and it was a vibrant sunny day.
I do remember that the Zürich fans had a special train scorted by police that took them directly from Zürich to St. Jakob's Park and back, with no way of letting the ultras around the city as they tend to be quite messy or even violent. People underestimate Swiss football, the stadiums are really cool and for a small nation the amount of talent that comes through is admirable. They're currently debating if installing a Play-Off system, to which most clubs oppose and the fans too which is what the banner says at 14:56 of the video.

@@awaydaysfootball Statistically speaking there are on average 4 goals between them in this derby, you just got very unlucky.
Basel had somewhat of a downfall after the owner changed in 2017 (after winning the league 9 times since 2008).
In 2021 the owner changed again an proceeded to replace almost everyone over the last 18 months.
Our team is currently very young and inexperienced, resulting in inconsistent performances.
Maybe come back in a few years ;)

Looked like an overall great experience I would say, you are always going to have those duller than dishwater games the most excitement fron the game had to be the guy at end. Something always to remember from going to Switzerland Ellis is that guy and BIG KEVVV.

@@lifestyleexzessiv5255 Ein Derby ist ein Spiel zwischen zwei Teams aus der selben Stadt oder Umgebung. Basel und Zürich sind zwar relativ nah (die Schweiz ist klein, ja), aber das ist kein Derby. GCZ/FCZ wäre zum Beispiel ein Derby.

Who tf even said that this is the most boring derby in football? I’m a FC Basel fan so I obviously have to ask this question. People are not interested in our league because the level obviously isn’t as high as in the top leagues but I’ve never actually heard anyone say it was boring!?🤨

please go to the Copenhagen derby at some point, the match and the fans are always mental, we're talking always around 10 minutes of extra time, because of pyro and fights
10:25 What an amazing atmosphere, and there's no moron on the stand throwing a flare onto the pitch or even into a section of the stadium. But I wouldn't really call this a derby while the distances between bigger towns and cities are much shorter in Switzerland since it's a geographically small country. I think Basel vs. FC Zürich is more like a classic in Swiss top flight football comparable to Liverpool vs. Arsenal in England, Barcelona vs. Real Madrid in Spain or Dortmund vs. Bayern in Germany.

Thanks for coming by. Basel vs. Zurich is definitely the best experience in Switzerland when it comes to ultra culture. their supporters are by far the best. I'd rank St Gallen third - they're not many but they're passionate af, whereas Berne is overrated. They're many (as they're the most successful nowadays), but nowhere near Basel or Zurich and they're behaving rather cowardly - (always mouthy against small teams like lugano or lausanne though)

If you want to see an intense Match and great Fans you should visit St.Gallen-Young Boys Bern. It's a new rivalry coming up. best example is the 3:3 2 years ago. This game (Basel-Zürich) was sadly not that good but both of the teams have a crisis so you should know.

Whoever says it's "boring" just doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. Clearly they haven't actually watched it. It's actually a very fiery rivalry that has been PACKED with drama over the years. Those ignorant people are just making things up!
Unfortunately, you just happened to go to one of the most boring FCB-FCZ matches ever played, and it also happened at what most would consider Basel's lowest point in DECADES (hence the below-average attendance and the angry/negative fans). Sorry for your bad luck. 😞
Thankfully things have picked up at least a little bit since then, thanks in large part to a manegerial change. We're playing much more exciting and effective football now. We're currently in 5th place and we still have a pretty good chance for a top-four finish, which would give us a chance to qualify for a European tournament. However, with all the success we've had over the past couple of decades, fourth place would still be below standard. Considering how the earlier part of the season went though, I wouldn't consider that to be too bad. Oh, and we're also in the semifinals of the Conference League right now, which is our second European semifinal ever!

I was in the home stand and this game was so frustrating to watch... One of the, if not the worst perfromances by Basel... Atmosphere was great as always but the game... Glad we bounced back yesterday tho :)
If you wanna see something unique in switzerland, come visit us in Aarau. We play in the second highest division in swiss football, the stadium is over 100 years old and to my knowledge one of the last stadium on this level were you can walk freely around almost the entire pitch and be really close to whats happening on the pitch.
