I used to ride mopeds in the Netherlands, among them Zundapp (great
memories) and in my experience after a while the exhaust, especially
close to the cylinder, would get a coating of carbon on the inside,
restricting the engine. We either bought an exhaust with a lager
diameter or tried to get the caking off, I sometimes used a wire in a
drill and let it spin inside the tube to knock the carbon off.. Also the
exhaust could get full of gooey residue in the muffler, sometimes we
would poor gas into the exhaust, ignite it and let it burn off the
residue. Obviously we did this outside and at a place where you would
not cause damage of fire. Not to environmentally friendly but it's a
two-stroke anyway ;) It was great to see those Bing carburetors again,
so many combinations of carburetor size, jets and gas needles I tried to
get the most power. Those Puch mopeds were very popular during the
eighties and nineties, nowadays you see mostly moped scooters in Europe.

Boy that takes me back. When I was 16 I rode one of those back and forth to my job at a hole in the wall machine shop. It had a windshield, fairing and saddlebags. The old guys at the shop had Harleys. Somehow I had no shame.

Really enjoyed that. Back in '74, a dark purple Puch Maxi was my first motorised vehicle. I always loved the characteristic throttling back sound, and I could almost smell the magical two-stroke fumes when you first took it out on the road. But I hated the max. speed of not much more than 30mph, and all other traffic whizzing past, and slowing right down when going uphill! Nostalgic.

My first big purchase as a teen in 1979 was a brand new gold Puch Maxi 2. Man...I LOVED that moped! Had the deluxe seat, black box on the back, heavy-duty shocks, and had it bored out to go 44mph on a flat. (I remember some of us drilling holes in the exhaust pipe too?) It was the fastest moped around town. I spent just over $1,000 on it, which was a lot of money at the time! We actually had a Puch riding club for a bit! (We got an article in the Grand Rapids Press! Lol!)
Great times, and a great piece of machine. Good to see someone with your mechanical know-how cleaning this old gem up!
    Thanks for the videos!

I'm 52 now, but when I was 14 in Ohio, my friends and I all found a way to acquire mopeds. In Ohio, in 1978ish, the law was that you could get a moped license at 14, but they could not exceed 20mph. Before that law went into place, mopeds could reach as high as 25 or 30mph. Two of my friends found some Vespa Ciao's that had saddlebags and turn signals, from an old couple a few doors down. They were older/faster. The mopeds, not my neighbors. Also, one friend had a Puch Maxi, another a Sachs Westlake, and another had a Garelli (don't know the model). I saved my chore money and bought a Vespa Ciao, but it didn't have turn signals or saddle bags, and was governed to exactly 20mph. The Ciao's were belt driven from a centrifugal clutch. Sounded like vacuum cleaners. I really liked the Sachs mopeds. German engineering and well built.

They're definitely bigger across the pond but they still have a place in the states... Tomos mopeds were super popular in my town in highschool and I see a lot of other scoots with the occasional moped around in denver. After having a ruckus and a 77 batavus stolen, I went for a cheap Chinese scoot for my 3rd and mechanically its been just as reliable as any others I've owned over the years. The batavus was a real dog.. always started right up but you'd be lucky to surpass 25 on flat.

choke pin should be al te way down for ON. to start it at cold weather. and when it runs the choke will also come up and thus OFF. when you rotate your trottle handle. the trottle slider pulls the choke up and off when the trottle slider goes up.

The plastic disc in the front drive chain sprocket is to cushion the chain links as they pass over the teeth of the sprocket.
Try running the bike with the small white air cleaner tube that fits into the frame removed.
That seems to cure 4 stroking at high revs.
You can buy 70cc cylinder, piston kits to update this engine. They are bulletproof.

You are right about the 4 stroking, it just needs leaning off a touch. You could raise the exhaust port about 1.5-2 mm, you could remove 2mm off the back of the piston skirt (assuming that it is piston ported!), skim 0.5mm off the head, it will end up doing 45 MPH!

Worked building exercise equipment for a few years. Best thing we found for installing 2' long grips on stair climbers was hairspray. Spray it inside grip, and on handlebars, slides on like butter, when it dries, it aint coming off, unless you use air to remove grip.

Actually filling the jet with solder and the redrilling it is super easy. the really nice thing about doing it that way is there no fear of going too big because all you have to do it hit it with the solder again and start over. I've used that method many many times and never had an issue. Of course a set of jet drills is kind of needed.

It's nice to see them, and other classic mopeds getting a new lease of life and new recognition. Great Video! I'm currently getting a mint condition Puch of the same model and year of Manufacture as yours ready for my daughter to take back to campus on the west coast. I should say near mint as it looks mint with some engine and other mechanical issues. I was a moped guy as a kid. I saved for a Vespa Grande ( It was the only moped available to me in my area at the time ) and it was a great looking moped and ran very well but it was a heavy moped and it would barely hit 20 MPH (which was the legal limit in my state at that time too ) with it's belt drive and it's two piece, V expanding clutch which was the "automatic variable speed transmission". Just a year later, Puch and Tomas mopeds were available readily and the speed limit was raised to 30. They were also much less expensive than the Vespa. I spent a great deal of time and paper route and lawn cutting money as a kid ( 12, 13 yrs. old ) trying to figure out that huge "secret" to get the extra 10 MPH lol. Still have the Vespa, it's sitting in my Uncle's barn waiting to be resurrected. That's a future project. Thanks for the excellent video.

In 1969 I purchased an Allstate Motorcycle used, it originally was sold by sears. It was a 175 cc two stroke, twin pistons one spark plug. Puch made these cycles for Sears and Sears Robuck & Co, sold them under the name Allstate. I'm sure the cycle was at least 5 years old when I purchased it. Also the air cleaner was the choke, you rotated at bezel on the front which either opened or close the air inlet vents in front. I thought you might find my comment interesting. I unfortunately melted a cylinder, I probably didn't have the fuel and oil mixed correctly, and I found a collector who used to sell Puchs, that had a Yamaha dealership and I got a 1 year old 125 Enduro with posi injection for just a few hundred bucks and that old AllState. I felt lucky to have elec. start and a reliable bike lol.

You can de-memory-ify rubber seals by boiling them in very slightly soapy water. That relaxes the polymer molecules and makes it go back to its original shape.

I had a Sachs motor way back when , had occasional trouble with the transfer port clogging with carbon causing loss of power and 4 stroking .

I sold motor cycles and mopeds in the 1970 to 1990 period. Japanese and European makes. When we were building them up fresh out of the crate we always junked those blasted metal shrouds on the plug caps. They often picked up the current by way of induction and would partially short out to the fins, especially in damp or wet weather. Caused misfires and poor performance, if necessary we replaced them altogether with old fashioned rubber caps. After all they were only there to reduce interference to radio and TV sets. Made a big difference to my favourite big Kawasaki triple anyway.

Really nice moped mate! and that 2 speed engine i love it. Here in the Netherlands those engines are really hard to come by and if you are lucky enough to find one it will cost you 250/300 euro. Greetz!

Mustie you got that spot on, sounds just like the typical puch "puk" of my teens :-D.
Puch maxi's and similar do fourstroke on full throttle when going down a hill, they all do it!!.
They are such a simple and forgiving engine, thats why i enjoyed mine :-D.
Looks like the nut is missing off the end of the baffle, they have a habit of escaping.

Hi Mustie 1. I had a Puch 3 speed (MS 50 super) back in -77, and my experience is, that you need af bigger exhaust header (1") and a higher compressionratio to get some decent revs. :-) enjoy your fine and enformative videos, as i own a VW buggy (selfmade) from -73.

Just a thought ... instead of drilling out the two-stroke muffler (or in addition to), seems like a good idea to maybe soak the muffler in solvent overnight. Next day, blow it out with air and then re-attach. Solvent might also help to stop surface rust from going further into the metal.
Also, RE: two-strokes ... pretty important, I think, to have the correct fuel/oil ratio. I'll never forget, my old Hodaka 90 called for 20:1 mix.
