Thank you so much for doing this comparison. I've been going back and forth trying to find affordable material and not knowing what would work, and this has helped so much!
Came here to watch your review as the AtmosFX material is still sold out. Thanks for reviewing power mesh! My order has been placed and im looking forward to doing a hologram in my yard this Halloween! (Have been projecting in my windows for years, and last year added a second projector for Pumpkin Jamboree on orange trash bags which was a big hit. Now i have a 3rd projector!)
Hi Tricia. Thanks for the tip on Material i'm from the UK and just getting into the Digital Decoration scene but availability to get the ATMOSFX material is not easy but this looks like a really good alternative and I have ordered some to try I'll let you know how i get on.Great Channel.
Hi can you let me know what material you went with please. I'm from UK and I'm worried the atmosfx material won't come on time plus if I can get something a bit cheaper would be perfect. Thanks
I came here specifically to see how grey tulle compared to the others because I want something I can use outside that will almost disappear into the background. The other materials are too thick - they're obvious when used outside... and then you chose not to even test the tulle at all, lol.
I added an update in the description that tulle and chiffon work we also. I know it’s not the same as seeing it though. 😩 I truly didn’t think it would work. When I couldn’t return the tulle I purchased, I played around with it. Layering it twice (at least) works, but of all the fabrics, it’s my least favorite.
I love frosted shower curtains for windows (rear projection). Definitely my favorite! I have another video posted with links for other fabrics just in case you haven’t seen it. th-cam.com/video/BsvVztOu45U/w-d-xo.html
Did you try a slightly darker power mesh material by chance, like grey instead of light grey? (Do they make grey?) I'm curious if that "hides" better than the light grey. Incidentally I started with one projector and a couple of projections a few years ago. I'm now up to five projectors and I've almost bought out AtmosFX. :) I've projections on my rooftop, garage door, a bedroom window, a "graveyard" area on the left side of the front yard, and another display on the right side of the yard. I'm the hit of the neighborhood. In fact, I don't think anyone else in Gainesville FL is doing projections. Just us. I can't believe no one else has caught on to this stuff! Already thinking towards next year. I want to project snakes crawling across our driveway, cockroaches coming out of a hole in our sidewalk, and tarantulas coming out of a hole under the apex of the rooftop eve on the side of the house. (sigh!) I can't stop! Please help me! LOL!
LOL! It’s definitely an obsession once you start! I haven’t used black or a darker grey but have read about others using black. The one remark I saw was that the image didn’t project as brightly, but if you have video editing capabilities you can boost the brightness a bit to help offset a little.
So I see the power mesh does not list the grey color. Black and white would be the only options. Feel like white would stand out and black might absorb much of the projection. Your opinion?
I wouldn’t go white, but I have seen some people go with black. I think on its own, I wouldn’t opt for it vs gray, but if you bump up your brightness, it might be ok. If you are in the Atmosfx Decorating Community FB page, there’s some posts using the black power mesh.
Great breakdown. Can you suggest something that is larger? My garage opening is 17' wide by 7' tall. I'd LOVE to have it one continuous piece but I can't find material that large. Any thoughts?
It might be difficult to find a single piece that exact height/width. The power mesh I mentioned is close but you would likely have gaps on either side or to one side depending on placement. You could always set up something on the gap side(s) to disguise. The good thing about the hollusion effect though, at night, no one will likely even notice where the material isn’t. A bolt of Tulle might get you width even when you double, but not the height. You could get around height by not opening the garage door all the way though. Before I went to projection mapping I used shower curtains in my garage doors. They weren’t the exact height so I wouldn’t have the garage doors open all the way to accommodate. Leaving about 12 inches at the top. Hopefully that made sense. 🎃
The power mesh I was looking at was called Light Gray but sold out, Would you happen to know if Silver or Charcoal will work? I am thinking on ordering 10 yards just wanted to see if you had any recommendation on these colors.
I have heard of other people using black bc they feel it fades into the scene more. My only concern is needing to bump up the brightness but that’s fairly easy either in editing the clips or the brightness on that projector itself. Idk about silver without seeing it. My thought with that, are they simply calling that as a color? In which case, might be ok. But the flip side, is it too reflective. I really am not helping, am I?? 😩👻 🤷🏻♀️
@@HauntingwithTricia I think you convinced me to get Hot Pink. lol...I will try and buy the minimum of the Charcoal color and try it out. Thanks and I understand each company might have a different name for the same color. Awesome help again and thank you.
@@HauntingwithTricia Its almost time again. I forgot what fabric I bought last year so came here to see what I could find. I cant believe I posted Hot Pink lol
Do you pull your material tight? I’m thinking about buying some power mesh and I will be using it outside. Just curious how wind will effect it if ifs not tight? Thanks
I have only ever used grey. I have heard of people using black though, so my only thought is bumping up the brightness to offset if the image/video is too dark. I did notice the difference in brightness with those I tested with the darker grey fabric. BUT I like the idea of the black fabric being less noticeable. 💜
Do you have any non-hollusion Window Projection Material to recommend? AtmosFX is sold out of their smaller projection material. Also, the AtmosFX 5.5 Foot by 9 Foot Hollusion Material -- is 9 feet the height or length? Thanks!
@@HauntingwithTricia yeah I got the grey chiffon and could hardly notice the difference with the hollusion material, so I got a bunch and had the alteration lady at my cleaners add grommets easy peasy
@Malcolm Dartnell I definitely think it can. Do you want to have it look like a hollusion? If you are ok with being able to see through it a bit, then it absolutely can work. If you want something a bit more opaque, I'd use a frosted shower curtain.

what materiall do you recommend for rear projection at a window to be viewed from outside? Im looking for a good contrast and sharp image. I feel these would let too much light through for that? but a frosted shower curtain is too blurry
If you haven’t already seen, here’s another post that’s a comparison between the frosted shower / hollusion material. th-cam.com/video/3DcgFGP8gFY/w-d-xo.html I think they both work great but depends on your use. In my opinion, hollusion really works best if you are adding to a scene and you want the digital decoration to be part of that scene but the material hopefully not be seen (example - ghosts flying through an outdoor cemetery). For windows/doors, I prefer the frosted shower curtain. If I wasn’t front projecting now, I would still be using those. Hope this helps! 🎃 Thanks for reaching out!

I used a grey outdoor curtain from amazon. It’s working. We added grommets to it. It’s 100x120inches.
I still think you should have checked out that sheer fabrick. It may have surprised you. At any rate it would have been a more complete comparison.
I posted an update in the description regarding additional fabrics. There’s lots of good options should anyone find others out of stock.
