Armand Assante is one of the most underrated actors out there! Its a shame that we dont see him on more major projects. Everything he does its intense. He got a great vibe and presence, just an awesome actor.
This film visually from art direction, vehicles, and overall depiction of Mega City One to the Cursed Earth is extremally comic accurate. Pretty much it looks like the film was pulled straight out of the comics, also the ABC Warrior is amazing looking. Only problem this film has is the fact Sly removes his helmet and some of the writing etc. The opening few minutes the film I will say that Sly is pretty solid as Judge Dredd with the helmet on. 2000AD has always been a mix of gritty and dark mixed with wacky satire so both Dredd (2012) and Judge Dredd (1995) are two opposites in which tone they tried to capture. So a perfect Dredd movie\show to me would be a mix of Judge Dredd (1995) and Dredd (2012) combine the two together for the perfect Dredd film. Like the Burton Batman films this film visually still looks amazing as it's mostly practical effects using models, sets, and matt paintings for the setting. I love Dredd (2012) but it lacked alot in the art direction for budget reasons with Mega City One not really looking like Mega City One but Cape Town with Tower Blocks not to mention it didn't really dive into the satire and more wacky side of the 2000AD universe but it's an amazing film, kind of how I feel about The Nolan Batman movies, Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises great films but Begins and the Burton films had the better Art Direction and production designs. From a visual standpoint Judge Dredd (1995) is a more faithful adaptation to the comics while Dredd (2012) is more faithful to Dredd as a character and goes for the tone of the more early comics. Things this film did really well: Art Direction - Vehicles, Outfits, Mega City One, Gangs, Cursed Earth. Soundtrack is amazing. Wackiness and Satire side of the 2000AD universe (This world has Texas City after all a massive Mega City with massive cowboy statues and buildings with Cowboy Hats) Action is really fun and enjoyable. Film does a great job at showcasing a wide range of the 2000AD locations beyond Mega City On. And a bunch of Easter Eggs to the Comics. People say it's a "bad film" and that Dredd 2012 is better overall but Judge Dredd did so many aspects right that Dredd (2012) didn't while Dredd (2012) did so many things better. So they both haven there pros and cons but overall as a film Dredd 2012 is better as it's more true to the character of Dredd.
It's been said that the 1995 Dredd had the budget but not the story whereas the 2012 Dredd had the story but not the budget... there's some truth to that! The best person to have directed a Dredd film would have been Neil Blomkamp after 'District 9'... he was clearly and heavily influenced by '2000 AD' (and has admitted as such) and would have had both the commercial and creative clout to have made a fantastic Dredd movie with a proper budget to realise the full insanity of Mega-City One onscreen. The 1995 Stallone version has great production design, cinematography, effects, and score, but it was the wrong story, and quite frankly, the Judge costumes are laughable... like something out of a gay pride parade that wouldn't last 5 minutes in a crime-filled metropolis, in addition to the question of why Judges use motorbikes when flying vehicles are available! The 2012 Dredd film showed from the outset (and in a single shot) why Judges ride bikes, but more importantly, understood that Judges don't wear 'costumes'... their uniforms are functioning and functional pieces of equipment, like a cross between a riot cop and a SWAT team member. It also got right the basic storyline of using a single block as a microcosm of the wider city and keeping that the focus of the story even if it lacked the satirical edge and gallows humour of much of the comic. If they were going to try another Dredd screen adaptation, a CG animated film would be the best option, in my humble opinion...

What I’m tired of hearing about this film (which I love) and I’m a huge Stallone fan, is the whole “helmet” thing. He gets framed and arrested. He was getting his helmet removed and rank stripped anyway. It serves the story.
I liked both versions, myself. Sly’s version is a bigger romp, as Urban’s version takes a simplified ‘Raid Redemtion’ plot line route and adapts it to Dredd’s world. I actually hold them equally because Rob Schneider and Armand Assante raise ‘Judge Dredd’ slightly above a simple Stallone vehicle. Because that’s why Stallone takes his helmet off. It’s about Stallone playing Dredd as opposed to Urban becoming Dredd for his film.
@@damianstarks3338 Raid redemption stole the plot from Dredd. Dredd started production first, it's script got leaked and lo and behold the raid suddenly appears and beats Dredd to the punch. In terms of Stallone taking his helmet off, he was contractually obligated to, at the time of filming he had every issue of 2000ad sent to him and absorbed himself in the character, however, his contract unfortunately had a clause stating how much face time he must have, he was all for keeping the helmet on but had his hands tied.
I remember seeing this in the cinema when it came out absolutly loved it right up to when Stallone takes the helmet off. They nailed the look and feel of the Judges and Megacity 1 but taking tthe helmet off is unforgivable.
As a huge Dredd fan, I couldn't wait to see this at the cinema. I even convinced the theatre to let me have the 6 foot tall 3D cardboard standee from the foyet, which collapsed on me one night in bed. After the helmet came off, the story went downhill but still amazing production design and cast. Despite what I thought about the story, I had hoped it would lead to a more comic accurate sequel. Sad at the time, but I'm so glad we got to see Karl Urban's take on Dredd.

They Cast the "Angel gang" perfectly. I just wished we could've seen "Ratty" and "Fink" (I need sum "Piiiisssan")! If the CGI was better back then, they could've done a Sequel, "Judge Dredd vs. the Dark Judges". Judges from another Dimension Deemed that LIFE was a Crime, and after killing their Planet, found their way into Dredd's universe. There was DEATH (The Leader), Fear, Fire and Mortis.
Great reaction Lauren, loved this movie growing up and it’s a shame they never made a proper sequel but their were talks of one near the time with Jim Carry as Judge Death with an Apocalypse War story line. Great seeing Diane Lane in this, as a fan of The Walking Dead I don’t know if u recognised the father of the Angel gang- Hershel, also the war droid Rico reprogrammed as his bodyguard was an ABC Warrior, a character from a separate 2000AD story line, this movie does have a lot of fun Easter eggs, just don’t ask how recycled food is made 😂
Mister 'ahy ahm da Laahww.' This movie needs a big bottle of wine to go with all the cheese. It was kinda cool having James Earl Jones do the opening. Rob Schnieder kind of stole the show, long with Armand Assante as Rico. The visuals were pretty good for the time. The Judge uniforms were pretty dope. Stallone was ok, but Urban was far superior as Dredd...due in large part to Urban never taking off his helmet. The one liners abounded...mostly from Rob Schnieder. LOVED your face when Dredd tells Schieder ..."They're cannibals." It was a bit of a shocked look...lol. overall, this movie mostly pales next to Dredd 2012. It was still a lot of fun to watch with you Lauren. It always is. The Gold flows. We're here with you. Peace and love. ❤️✌️🥰

I loved that this movie brought two actors from the 1984 Dune back together. Max Von Seidow and Jurgen Procnow sorry for the spelling. Max played Dr. Kiens and Jurgen was Duke Leto.
Living in England, being English and a proud nerd, 2000 AD was my jam in the late 80's and early 90's. I was beyond excited for this...and then I saw it and was crushed 😂. However it's now become a guilty pleasure movie for me (I even brought the US import Blu Ray) and I always have a laugh watching it. Bad films can be great fun!

Only a handful of people myself included remember Sylvester Stallone's I AM THE LAW quote in the court scene. IT'S A LIE!, THE EVIDENCE HAS BEEN FALSIFIED! The problem most fans had with this movie is that dredd removed his helmet, in the books that only happened one time, and it was so underwhelming to see his face, that the artist covered it with a censure sticker before publishing it. funny enough, when offered the part karl urban only had one condition for taking the role, and that was he would never remove the helmet on screen.
The first time I heard about Judge Dredd was the Anthrax song I Am The Law on their Among The Living album. And when I first rented this movie on VHS back when it came out I actually had a girlfriend...
For a pretty accurate depiction of the comic book, react to the fan film Judge Minty. Comic suggestions? Judge Child Saga, Block War and it's follow up, Apocalypse War, where East Meg (basically, the Soviet Judges) starts a nuclear war against Mega City, City of the Damned, the conclusion to the Judge Child saga, where Dredd and Anderson time travel to future to gather information to stop the destruction from happening. Cursed Earth saga is also great. At the time, after its original publication in 2000 AD, the fast food franchise wars (McDonald's, KFC etc serving human meat and going to actual wars against each other), was scrubbed from collections of the Cursed Earth saga, but I think that may have been restored. I also really like Night of the Werewolf, where Dredd fights a werewolf epidemic, momentarily becoming one himself.

I agree with you. However, I do understand the hesitance to "attack" a movie that's popular with its fans. I recently saw another reactor get a TON of hate in the comments for daring to dislike "The Exorcist." Fans of a specific movie or series can be unpredictable.
1995's Dredd is so cheesy I can feel the cholesterol clogging my arteries. That being said it's a fun nostalgia watch, and they did use characters from the comics. I prefer the 2012 version for the more realistic adaptation. In 2040 reactors will probably be saying 'its a product of its time' about it too. Great job as always Laurenn.
This movie is heavily based on the early years of the comics in looks and humor. The 2012 Dredd is more like the later, darker and more serious years. Also, for the 2012 film they made the Judge uniform a lot more practical while still having a unique way of incorporating the comic's designs.
As someone who used to read a lot of Judge Dredd comics, I'd say this movie nailed the look of Mega City, that ABC Warrior robot and the look of the Angel Gang, including Mean Machine. I did not like Dredd's helmet, while in the 2012 movie they nailed the look, but in the suit, moved towards realism. In this movie, the suit is very comicbook style, but still not faithful to the comics, except for having a large eagle on one shoulder and the shoulder plate on the other. As for Dredd's character, it's way off, in many respects, as it has been softened too much as the movie progresses. The satire is there, the adventure is there and there is a hint of Dredd being an antihero, like in the comics, heroic, but with blatantly Fascist tendencies, inherent in the Judge system, but then it turns away from the comics. Something that the comic book creators gravitated towards and ultimately stuuck to, was never showing Dredd's face. In the rare occasion that he was shown without a helmet, his face was always obscured in some way, in shadows, under bandages etc, but in this movie, they break that rule after the first scene. The story in this is an amalgam of stories, mostly three of them. One is the story of Dredd's identical twin Rico turning into a life of crime and becoming a corrupt Judge. One is the Judge Cal saga. Think of mad megalomaniac modeled after Roman Emperor Caligula, framing Dredd for murder, then ruling Mega City with an iron grip, executing people from left to right and doing crazy things, even naming his goldfish as a judge. The Angel gang were introduced in Judge Child saga, where they hijacked a mutant child from Cursed Earth that some of the psychic Judges have prophesied to save Mega City from great calamity. Dredd follows them across the Galaxy, on different planets. One of the planets has actual war as a TV Game Show, and they are running TV ads, which were very obviously an inspiration to the way the writers of Robocop used TV ads as a way of world building and adding satire. The saga takes inspiration from works like Dune, Star Wars movies and even the surreal drawings of M. C. Escher. Now, a recommendation... The Angel gang gets killed, but in later stories, Mean Machine gets resurrected and he even makes an appearance in Judgement on Gotham, the great Batman / Judge Dredd crossover, which also has Scarecrow, Judge Anderson and both Dredd and Anderson's arch nemesis, the interdimensional superfiend, the ghostly, decaying Judge Death, a twisted, supernatural corpse-like, dark parody of judges, who considers life itself a crime, and wants to eliminate all life. His fellow Judges, Mortis, Fear and Fire don't make an appearance.

It could be that this was the first out of the two that I saw but I find the story to have more interest and the aesthetics is closer to that of the original comic, plus of course there is the action and comedy moments. Rico was played by Armand Assante, who is an amazing actor, most of the films he's in aren't the best, but he always plays the role well whether he's a psycho killer, mafia, cop or dancer.
Dredd is obviously the better movie in almost every way. Truer to the comics, Karl Urban took it seriously, etc...but this is so much more rewatchable.
I grew up on Dredd being born in the 70's and reading 2000AD and Dredd monthlies as a kid (even if Rogue Trooper was my fave, where is his movie dammit, in developmental hell for nearly 30 years now), so I saw this at cinema twice when it came out. I'll not wax on because there's already some nice lengthy comments about it but, yes, both films capture elements of Dredd perfectly and if you could meld those parts together, you'd have a pitch perfect Dredd movie. Really enjoyed watching you have so much fun with this one, never listen to the nay sayers haha. P.S. Karl Urban was best Dredd performance for me, since you asked.
I am an old fart and saw this movie when it first came out and I actually liked it. Judge Dredd was real popular in the 1980s in a board game, a role playing game (which I still have in my stack of table top RPGs we played before online video games took over) and comic books. I think the movie captures the look and feel of the Judge Dredd lore from the games and comic books. It was fun being the judge, jury and executioner.

Since you like Armand Assante I recommend a 2 part mini-series he starred in as the lead in The Odyssey from 1997. The Odyssey is a Greek myth of king Odysseus and his difficult journey returning home from the Trojan war. He does a great job in it and each part is an hour and a half long. Thanks for the video and sharing your reaction. Originally this movie was suppose to be PG-13 because they had a deal to sell kids toys for it. However, the director turned the writers PG-13 script into a NC-17 movie then cut it to an R. The writer had trouble getting work after because studios thought he was difficult to work with even though it was the director that screwed that up.
This movie and Demolition have a lot more in common than just Sly and Rob Schneider. Both have a respected officer of the law framed, and convicted for deaths he didn't cause. The primary villain, and the person who frames him, is someone with a connection to the hero. The villain's escape from prison is orchestrated by a respected member of the city who wants to use him to do his bidding. He thinks he has the villain under control, but the villain has other ideas and ends up ordering his death. A female officer goes rogue in order to help the hero take down the villain. There's a chase scene where the hero turns control of his vehicle over to someone who doesn't really know how to properly control it. In the end, the villain plans to use a high-tech facility to create his own army, but the hero arrives and stops him before that plan can be put into action, and the facility is destroyed in the process. The villain gets defeated, but the city is left without its leader(s). It's like they took the core elements of the Demolition Man script, mixed them up a little bit and wrote the rest of Judge Dredd around it.
The production design (by Nigel Phelps and his crew) in this version is amazing, and Alan Silvestri's powerful score never disappoints. On re-watch, it's fascinating to see how much comedy is in this film. Yes, it's not as bad as I remember, though the screenplay is a bit by the numbers on occasion. But, all in all, it's a fun flick to revisit now and then. Cheers!
James Remar was the original Corporal Hicks in Aliens, but the role was taken over by Michael Biehn (I forget why). There are still a few scenes that feature Remar, shot from behind).
I was a teenager in the 90s, so all of that cheese was a part of me. Hercules & Xena, SeaQuest DSV, Lois & Clark. I loved all of that stuff and still do, so I can't pick between the two films. While the newer Dredd is realistic & grounded, Judge Dredd, despite two lore-breaking mistakes (taking off the helmet and the Lawmaster motorbike flying) is far better at showing the mythos & the world that the character inhabits, so I honestly can't choose a winner. 🤷♂ Thanks for another cool video...!
Yeah this Judge Dredd was a very very tone downed of the graphic Comic through Interface with the Studios...that is why 2012 Dredd is so respected and Loved by Judge Dredd Comic Fan's with 2012 it stayed true to everything about Judge Dredd...this one was to comedic and easy going all around

Apparently there is about 40 mins missing from this movie, Stallone disowned this cut and wanted his name removed, the deleted scenes were also destroyed which is a bummer.

One rule is that people never see Dredd face and they have to break it here just so people can see Stallone's face and one more reason why 2012 movie is better ;)
My favorite line from this movie is when Judge Hershey and Rico's girl is scrappin at the end and Judge H punches her, chick goes "Bitch!!", Hershey: "Judge Bitch", proceeds to headbutt her LOL!!
Overlooked Sly Stallone films to watch are Tango and Cash, Cliffhanger, The Specialist and Assassins. His more recent films to watch include Rambo, Escape Plan, Bullet to the Head and the Expendables trilogy. I also recommend watching his crime drama Tulsa King
I don't care what the comic fans say. I will always love Stallone's Judge Dredd, even if they did show his face. He took what would otherwise have been another ill-conceived 90s comic book adaptation and injected a bit of Demolition Man into it. And it worked! It was good old fashioned, popcorn-eating fun! Saw this in theaters when I was a kid and loved it. Never understood the hate it gets. Sure, Dredd is the better overall movie between the two. But I find this one to be highly entertaining.

Dredd (2012) is a better movie tbh with a much smaller plot. It was a drug bust gone wrong. This movie's plot had a much grander scale: a coup within the Halls of Justice, political intrigue & murder and the origin of Judge Dredd himself. I agree the helmet removal didn't feel right but as a convicted criminal it made sense - I just wish they had waited to Dredd's conviction scene to remove it though. As for all the lore, The Long Walk, The Angel Family, The ABC Warrior and The Janus Project - that was all good stuff although many think they tried to cram too much in. The 'feel' of Megacity was closer to the comics here than in Dredd (2012) although the Block 'Life' was better portrayed in Urban's movie for obvious reasons. I liked both versions, myself. Sly’s version is a bigger romp, as Urban’s version takes a simplified ‘Raid Redemtion’ plot line route and adapts it to Dredd’s world.
I actually hold them equally because Rob Schneider and Armand Assante raise ‘Judge Dredd’ slightly above a simple Stallone vehicle. Because that’s why Stallone takes his helmet off. It’s about Stallone playing Dredd as opposed to Urban becoming Dredd for his film.
Perfect comparison on the 2012 remake.
@@damianstarks3338 Raid redemption stole the plot from Dredd. Dredd started production first, it's script got leaked and lo and behold the raid suddenly appears and beats Dredd to the punch. In terms of Stallone taking his helmet off, he was contractually obligated to, at the time of filming he had every issue of 2000ad sent to him and absorbed himself in the character, however, his contract unfortunately had a clause stating how much face time he must have, he was all for keeping the helmet on but had his hands tied.

I remember seeing this in the cinema when it came out absolutly loved it right up to when Stallone takes the helmet off. They nailed the look and feel of the Judges and Megacity 1 but taking tthe helmet off is unforgivable.
As a huge Dredd fan, I couldn't wait to see this at the cinema. I even convinced the theatre to let me have the 6 foot tall 3D cardboard standee from the foyet, which collapsed on me one night in bed. After the helmet came off, the story went downhill but still amazing production design and cast. Despite what I thought about the story, I had hoped it would lead to a more comic accurate sequel. Sad at the time, but I'm so glad we got to see Karl Urban's take on Dredd.
Lovely Laurenn, think your critique is pretty spot on. Stallone's Judge Dredd may be campy and the look is closer to comic accurate. I feel the Urban's Judge Dredd is more grounded in reality. I like them both for different reasons.

If the CGI was better back then, they could've done a Sequel, "Judge Dredd vs. the Dark Judges". Judges from another Dimension Deemed that LIFE was a Crime, and after killing their Planet, found their way into Dredd's universe. There was DEATH (The Leader), Fear, Fire and Mortis.

Great reaction Lauren, loved this movie growing up and it’s a shame they never made a proper sequel but their were talks of one near the time with Jim Carry as Judge Death with an Apocalypse War story line. Great seeing Diane Lane in this, as a fan of The Walking Dead I don’t know if u recognised the father of the Angel gang- Hershel, also the war droid Rico reprogrammed as his bodyguard was an ABC Warrior, a character from a separate 2000AD story line, this movie does have a lot of fun Easter eggs, just don’t ask how recycled food is made 😂

Armand Assante (Rico) is an amazing actor, and does a fantastic version of The Odyssey (TV Mini Series 1997). if you can find it, its INCREDIBLE.
Mister 'ahy ahm da Laahww.' This movie needs a big bottle of wine to go with all the cheese. It was kinda cool having James Earl Jones do the opening. Rob Schnieder kind of stole the show, long with Armand Assante as Rico. The visuals were pretty good for the time. The Judge uniforms were pretty dope. Stallone was ok, but Urban was far superior as Dredd...due in large part to Urban never taking off his helmet. The one liners abounded...mostly from Rob Schnieder. LOVED your face when Dredd tells Schieder ..."They're cannibals." It was a bit of a shocked look...lol. overall, this movie mostly pales next to Dredd 2012. It was still a lot of fun to watch with you Lauren. It always is. The Gold flows. We're here with you. Peace and love. ❤️✌️🥰

I loved that this movie brought two actors from the 1984 Dune back together. Max Von Seidow and Jurgen Procnow sorry for the spelling. Max played Dr. Kiens and Jurgen was Duke Leto.
Living in England, being English and a proud nerd, 2000 AD was my jam in the late 80's and early 90's. I was beyond excited for this...and then I saw it and was crushed 😂. However it's now become a guilty pleasure movie for me (I even brought the US import Blu Ray) and I always have a laugh watching it. Bad films can be great fun!

The problem most fans had with this movie is that dredd removed his helmet, in the books that only happened one time, and it was so underwhelming to see his face, that the artist covered it with a censure sticker before publishing it. funny enough, when offered the part karl urban only had one condition for taking the role, and that was he would never remove the helmet on screen.
The first time I heard about Judge Dredd was the Anthrax song I Am The Law on their Among The Living album.
And when I first rented this movie on VHS back when it came out I actually had a girlfriend...

Comic suggestions? Judge Child Saga, Block War and it's follow up, Apocalypse War, where East Meg (basically, the Soviet Judges) starts a nuclear war against Mega City, City of the Damned, the conclusion to the Judge Child saga, where Dredd and Anderson time travel to future to gather information to stop the destruction from happening. Cursed Earth saga is also great. At the time, after its original publication in 2000 AD, the fast food franchise wars (McDonald's, KFC etc serving human meat and going to actual wars against each other), was scrubbed from collections of the Cursed Earth saga, but I think that may have been restored. I also really like Night of the Werewolf, where Dredd fights a werewolf epidemic, momentarily becoming one himself.

If you liked Armand Asante in this, you should check out his other films. He is a class actor. I really enjoyed his version of the Odyssey.
1995's Dredd is so cheesy I can feel the cholesterol clogging my arteries. That being said it's a fun nostalgia watch, and they did use characters from the comics. I prefer the 2012 version for the more realistic adaptation. In 2040 reactors will probably be saying 'its a product of its time' about it too. Great job as always Laurenn.
This movie is heavily based on the early years of the comics in looks and humor. The 2012 Dredd is more like the later, darker and more serious years. Also, for the 2012 film they made the Judge uniform a lot more practical while still having a unique way of incorporating the comic's designs.
Being a cold killer of justice isn't as appreciated as one should know. But it is appealing of how much pain is endured. Love her questions
As someone who used to read a lot of Judge Dredd comics, I'd say this movie nailed the look of Mega City, that ABC Warrior robot and the look of the Angel Gang, including Mean Machine. I did not like Dredd's helmet, while in the 2012 movie they nailed the look, but in the suit, moved towards realism. In this movie, the suit is very comicbook style, but still not faithful to the comics, except for having a large eagle on one shoulder and the shoulder plate on the other. As for Dredd's character, it's way off, in many respects, as it has been softened too much as the movie progresses.
The satire is there, the adventure is there and there is a hint of Dredd being an antihero, like in the comics, heroic, but with blatantly Fascist tendencies, inherent in the Judge system, but then it turns away from the comics. Something that the comic book creators gravitated towards and ultimately stuuck to, was never showing Dredd's face. In the rare occasion that he was shown without a helmet, his face was always obscured in some way, in shadows, under bandages etc, but in this movie, they break that rule after the first scene.
The story in this is an amalgam of stories, mostly three of them. One is the story of Dredd's identical twin Rico turning into a life of crime and becoming a corrupt Judge. One is the Judge Cal saga. Think of mad megalomaniac modeled after Roman Emperor Caligula, framing Dredd for murder, then ruling Mega City with an iron grip, executing people from left to right and doing crazy things, even naming his goldfish as a judge. The Angel gang were introduced in Judge Child saga, where they hijacked a mutant child from Cursed Earth that some of the psychic Judges have prophesied to save Mega City from great calamity. Dredd follows them across the Galaxy, on different planets. One of the planets has actual war as a TV Game Show, and they are running TV ads, which were very obviously an inspiration to the way the writers of Robocop used TV ads as a way of world building and adding satire. The saga takes inspiration from works like Dune, Star Wars movies and even the surreal drawings of M. C. Escher.
Now, a recommendation... The Angel gang gets killed, but in later stories, Mean Machine gets resurrected and he even makes an appearance in Judgement on Gotham, the great Batman / Judge Dredd crossover, which also has Scarecrow, Judge Anderson and both Dredd and Anderson's arch nemesis, the interdimensional superfiend, the ghostly, decaying Judge Death, a twisted, supernatural corpse-like, dark parody of judges, who considers life itself a crime, and wants to eliminate all life. His fellow Judges, Mortis, Fear and Fire don't make an appearance.

I love this version of Dredd, more than the newer version.
It could be that this was the first out of the two that I saw but I find the story to have more interest and the aesthetics is closer to that of the original comic, plus of course there is the action and comedy moments.

I grew up on Dredd being born in the 70's and reading 2000AD and Dredd monthlies as a kid (even if Rogue Trooper was my fave, where is his movie dammit, in developmental hell for nearly 30 years now), so I saw this at cinema twice when it came out. I'll not wax on because there's already some nice lengthy comments about it but, yes, both films capture elements of Dredd perfectly and if you could meld those parts together, you'd have a pitch perfect Dredd movie.
Really enjoyed watching you have so much fun with this one, never listen to the nay sayers haha.

I am an old fart and saw this movie when it first came out and I actually liked it. Judge Dredd was real popular in the 1980s in a board game, a role playing game (which I still have in my stack of table top RPGs we played before online video games took over) and comic books. I think the movie captures the look and feel of the Judge Dredd lore from the games and comic books. It was fun being the judge, jury and executioner.
So fun fact do you know the judge dredd outfit is made by Versace at stallones request which is pretty cool loved the reaction and loved the badge by the way!!!!
Since you like Armand Assante I recommend a 2 part mini-series he starred in as the lead in The Odyssey from 1997. The Odyssey is a Greek myth of king Odysseus and his difficult journey returning home from the Trojan war. He does a great job in it and each part is an hour and a half long. Thanks for the video and sharing your reaction. Originally this movie was suppose to be PG-13 because they had a deal to sell kids toys for it. However, the director turned the writers PG-13 script into a NC-17 movie then cut it to an R. The writer had trouble getting work after because studios thought he was difficult to work with even though it was the director that screwed that up.
This movie and Demolition have a lot more in common than just Sly and Rob Schneider.
Both have a respected officer of the law framed, and convicted for deaths he didn't cause. The primary villain, and the person who frames him, is someone with a connection to the hero. The villain's escape from prison is orchestrated by a respected member of the city who wants to use him to do his bidding. He thinks he has the villain under control, but the villain has other ideas and ends up ordering his death. A female officer goes rogue in order to help the hero take down the villain. There's a chase scene where the hero turns control of his vehicle over to someone who doesn't really know how to properly control it. In the end, the villain plans to use a high-tech facility to create his own army, but the hero arrives and stops him before that plan can be put into action, and the facility is destroyed in the process. The villain gets defeated, but the city is left without its leader(s).
It's like they took the core elements of the Demolition Man script, mixed them up a little bit and wrote the rest of Judge Dredd around it.
The production design (by Nigel Phelps and his crew) in this version is amazing, and Alan Silvestri's powerful score never disappoints. On re-watch, it's fascinating to see how much comedy is in this film. Yes, it's not as bad as I remember, though the screenplay is a bit by the numbers on occasion. But, all in all, it's a fun flick to revisit now and then.

James Remar was the original Corporal Hicks in Aliens, but the role was taken over by Michael Biehn (I forget why). There are still a few scenes that feature Remar, shot from behind).
I was a teenager in the 90s, so all of that cheese was a part of me. Hercules & Xena, SeaQuest DSV, Lois & Clark.
I loved all of that stuff and still do, so I can't pick between the two films.
While the newer Dredd is realistic & grounded, Judge Dredd, despite two lore-breaking mistakes (taking off the helmet and the Lawmaster motorbike flying)
is far better at showing the mythos & the world that the character inhabits, so I honestly can't choose a winner. 🤷♂

Yeah this Judge Dredd was a very very tone downed of the graphic Comic through Interface with the Studios...that is why 2012 Dredd is so respected and Loved by Judge Dredd Comic Fan's with 2012 it stayed true to everything about Judge Dredd...this one was to comedic and easy going all around

Apparently there is about 40 mins missing from this movie, Stallone disowned this cut and wanted his name removed, the deleted scenes were also destroyed which is a bummer.

The war robot is still one of the best Easter Eggs since it's Hammerstein (or at least the same model of robot) from the 2000ad strip "ABC Warriors".
One rule is that people never see Dredd face and they have to break it here just so people can see Stallone's face and one more reason why 2012 movie is better ;)

Overlooked Sly Stallone films to watch are Tango and Cash, Cliffhanger, The Specialist and Assassins. His more recent films to watch include Rambo, Escape Plan, Bullet to the Head and the Expendables trilogy. I also recommend watching his crime drama Tulsa King

I don't care what the comic fans say. I will always love Stallone's Judge Dredd, even if they did show his face. He took what would otherwise have been another ill-conceived 90s comic book adaptation and injected a bit of Demolition Man into it. And it worked! It was good old fashioned, popcorn-eating fun!

Dredd (2012) is a better movie tbh with a much smaller plot. It was a drug bust gone wrong.
This movie's plot had a much grander scale: a coup within the Halls of Justice, political intrigue & murder and the origin of Judge Dredd himself. I agree the helmet removal didn't feel right but as a convicted criminal it made sense - I just wish they had waited to Dredd's conviction scene to remove it though. As for all the lore, The Long Walk, The Angel Family, The ABC Warrior and The Janus Project - that was all good stuff although many think they tried to cram too much in. The 'feel' of Megacity was closer to the comics here than in Dredd (2012) although the Block 'Life' was better portrayed in Urban's movie for obvious reasons.
