      Thank god. I was gonna cry if you guys only watched this one. Dredd needs to have a sequel of its own tv show. Perfect casting and the movie really brought the comic book to life.
      This movie is just great camp. Its not a bad movie, its just purely, 80s. Its a fun movie to watch, but Dredd is where its at. Besides, mama is one if the best villains out there.

    Curious about the change in eye color I found this on Wikipedia; Stallone and his co-star Armand Assante wore blue contact lenses to match von Sydow who plays their genetic 'father'. Assante deliberately mimicked Stallone's speech patterns to better reflect their characters' relationship as siblings.

    The thing that a lot of people seem to forget is that the original Judge Dredd comics were very satirical in nature and featured tons of comedic elements. I think they focused more on those aspects of the comics with this movie, and having Stallone as Dredd probably implemented a lot of changes to the script (such as him being helmet-less for 95% of the film). The Karl Urban version of Dredd is a much more loyal depiction of the character than Stallone's, but Stallone's movie does pretty much nail the setting of the early comics.

    • @druciferDMA
      @druciferDMA 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Totally agree, that quirk, comedy and character of the comics was sorely missed for me with the new ones (love karl as dredd tho).

      I think even Karl Urban's Dredd is a lot more light-hearted and humane than the comic version.

    • @donkfail1
      @donkfail1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A bigger problem is that they tried to cram years of Dredd lore into one movie. The Urban movie feels more like what you could find in an issue of the comics.
      It really makes it obvious they didn't believe the Stallone movie would result in sequels. Just the Angel Gang could be enough story for a couple of movies if Dredd is in the wastelands for some reason.
      Keeping the helmet on is essential though. Perhaps if we see him come home to Walter the wobot, he could take it off.

    Always considered this one a mixed bag. Loved the few imported comics of Dredd that I could find as a kid. Because of the comics, I actually prefer the "look" of this one over Dredd 2012 (the city, the Lawmaster motorcycle, and especially the uniforms). Straight out of the comics.
    Could have been a fantastic movie if you throw out the script and replace it with something from the comics (maybe the Judge Death storyline); throw out all the actors aside from Max von Sydow, Diane Lane, and Prochnow; and find a decent actor of the era to have played Dredd. Well, to be honest, with a better script just Gorilla Glue the helmet to Stallone's head and he would have been perfectly fine.

      This is one of those movies that I remembered more fondly than on a recent viewing. I don't care that Stallone took off his helmet, as I'd never read the comics this is inspired by, but the writing definitely didn't do it justice (heh, pun intended). This is one of those movies that took an INCREDIBLE cast and instead of letting them elevate the script, the script drug them down into the sewers with it. A real shame. Not a fan of this movie. I always loved the fact that Judge Lawgivers are protected to ensure that even if a Judge is killed, the weapon CANNOT be turned upon other Judges or on innocent bystanders.
    In the comics it actually EXPLODES if it fails DNA ID verification and rapidly disarms (and removes hand and forearm) of the Perp, along with of course most likely causing the death of that perp from shrapnel and shock due to that sudden and MASSIVE trauma.

    I loved the dirty cheesy gritty satirical sense of humour of the comics. The thing I remember best about this movie (when we talk about likes and impressions) is how in one scene I thought Stallone looks exactly like Judge Dredd in one of the frames in the sole book I had. • @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
      @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ruaidhrí Ryan Not quite since the personality and attitude of the comics is so much satire and for all its mistakes the Stallone version has maybe 30% of that satire while the Urban version has maybe 10%.

    • @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
      @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ruaidhrí Ryan _"The satire in the comics has a broad range. Sometimes it's silly and comedic, like Otto Sump or The Fatties, whilst other times it's serious and politically reflective like, America or Origins."_
      Absolutely.
      _"Sometimes the comic doesn't do much satire at all but instead opts for horror, like Necropolis or Ratfink. But Dredd's world is always dark and brutal."_
      That's not untrue but it's always the same satire: fascist lawmen in a fascist police state in a crazy world. Necropolis has Judge Death who is pretty much satirical in himself.
      _"The Stallone film didn't feel satirical to me."_
      Most of it happens when Stallone has the helmet on.
      _"It didn't feel to me like it was trying to make any political points or critiques."_
      It isn't that kind of pinpoint satire, sure, but of course it's satire when you try to bribe the future police to get out of a ticket they blow up your car with their sidearm and you hack something just to survive and you get five years in a cell and there's robots knocking on your door asking for your trash to make into recycled food.
      EDIT: And there's a corner of Abbott and Costello?
      _"It was a big budget set piece that used Rob Schneider for comedy relief and felt very Hollywood and camp."_
      Yes, so?
      _"Whilst the 2012 film had subtle satire"_
      Right, but it's only a tenth of the amount in the source material and there's way too many viewers going "I wish we had Judges in real life."
      _"(the fatties were actually in it)"_
      No, it's a "blink and you missed it" nod to those of us that already know about the Fatties.
      _"and had several points of reflection on the grey area of the Judge system."_
      But barely any of that was done in a satirical manner.
      _"And regardless of our disagreement on the films overall, there is simply no denying that Urban Dredd felt like the character, whilst Stallone Dredd did not."_
      In most ways, yes, although I feel Urban Dredd was less extreme in his judging overall while Stallone Dredd had that "Sugar is illegal. Three years for distribution. Take him away." feel.

    • @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps
      @Mansplainer2099-jy8ps 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ruaidhrí Ryan _"Though I rarely felt that comic Dredd was extreme for the sake of being extreme."_
      That's not what I mean. I mean... umm... Urban Dredd would not sentence Fergie for hacking something to stay alive rather than climb the outside of the building but comic book Dredd might.
      _"He usually has a bigger picture reason for his harshness. Even when he was younger and less philosophical about the system, he still cared about the citizens and ethical justice."_
      Depends. He's the villain in the first part of America.
      _"I think both films might even be a bit harsher than the comic Dredd, seeing as both films have a death sentence for numerous crimes,"_
      That's how the "lawbook" is written though, not Dredd's personality.
      _"whilst the comic only seems to use the death sentence during war, or for treason."_
      Oh, the "lawbook" in the comics is not quite that lenient. I haven't read many of the comics and it was back in the day but I've started listening to The Dreddful Cyberpunk podcast on Spotify so I know early comic Dredd didn't shoot badguys dead often but it happened. Not on the moon though, they had no death sentence. Sentient robot cars and strange cattle but no death sentence.
      _"But killing a judge in the comics would be a life sentence, not death. Unless the law was different at some point that I've forgotten."_
      The movie simplifies it, I'm sure, but it makes sense in the "You kill a cop the cops will respond in kind" sense. We see that in movies like The Fugitive.

    Personally, I thought Stallone was good as Dredd. They got the uniforms, weapons and vehicles right, and Mega City One looked great. But they messed up with the story elements, including Dredd taking his helmet off, and having two Judges kissing (Judges aren't allowed to have romantic relationships). I'm guessing the film makers just took a basic look at the comics and made stuff up after that. This film could have been great, but it wasn't.

    As a kid who never read the comics I really enjoyed this movie and used to quote it religiously, but as an adult who is a fan of Halo and The Mandalorian I understand why people would be upset with this film. I think storyline wise removing his helmet would make sense if he kept it on until they sent him to prison because you can't go to prison with a judge's helmet on. However, I think him willingly taking it off early on was a bad move. I personally love both Judge Dredd and Dredd, I still get nostalgia when I watch JD though.

    What sank this film was casting Stallone in the main role. Director Danny Cannon was a die hard fan of the comics and nailed it with the costumes, the look of Mega City one, the ABC Warrior and the Angel gang.
    But once Stallone was on board he not only refused point blank to wear the helmet for the whole movie ( he never heard of nor read the source material ) but also due to his "star power" at the time he then went over the head of the Director and altered the script, the main story and general direction in which the film took.
    The comics back in the late 70s and throughout the 80s were very dark, violent, graphic and Karl Urban's portrayal nails that but that movie lacks the budget of the Stallone version and it shows. Plus the fact the Karl Urban version borrows more than a lot from the movie " The Raid."
    If they mixed the look, costumes and Mega City One of the Stallone version with Karl Urban's portrayal it would a been an instant hit and we would a been treated to more movies about this iconic Comic book character.

    I think Judge Dredd was always destined to fail in the US, 'cus of different demographics. While American 12 year olds read about Spider-man doing whatever a spider can, UK 12 year olds read about Judge Dredd kneecapping 5 rapists, then sentencing their victim to 5 years solitary confinement for running on the sidewalk. It was always written for adults, but read by kids, instead of being written for kids, but read by adults, which is kinda the sitch with superhero comics in the US now. And the some of the artwork was insane Especially in Slaine. 2000 AD had some really dark shit going on. But now, 12 year olds in the UK read...IDK what. Can they even read? Comics are dead as dead here.
    I wasn't even born when this movie came out, but I found a stack of 2000 AD comics in a Landmark Trust place I was staying in, and couldn't believe there were no proper movies made of any of it. It's SO much better movie material than anything Marvel or DC ever regurgitated...over and over and over. Nemesis the demon, Strontium Dogs, Judge Dredd, Slaine.
    I immediatley understood why football hooliganism was a thing in the 80's. Kids had gone from Beano and Dandy, to mass murder and torture.

    It’s more than just Stallone taking off the helmet.
    They strip the character of his role and title of Judge.
    The introduction of this comics icon to the larger mainstream and they remove him from the thing that defines the character.
    Why would you do that?

    Fun fact: If you watch the DVD version of Judge Dredd with the sound off, and start Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon exactly as the James Earl Jones' narration ends and the text begins to fade, you at least get to hear Dark Side of the Moon instead of completely wasting one hour and 36 minutes.

    HI, Judge Dredd was a main-line character in the U.K. children`s comic 2000 A.D., Dan Dare was another with his nemesis, the Mekon. I used to read them growing up. It was great to see him & the Mega-city landscape depicted in film. I enjoyed this one, even though, as you say, Stallone went mostly without the helmet.
    I think Diane Lane did well portraying Judge Hershey also. I`ve always enjoyed Max Von Sydow`s work, R.I.P. Max, thanks for your contribution to film.

      When it started in 1977, Dan Dare was supposed to be the big hero character that kids would buy it for but Judge Dredd became the big breakout character that's been continuous while DD kinda petered out.

    This movie is such a 90's movie. It's crazy, over the top, campy, crazy, stupid, and fun. This movie didn't do well, but I still find it super enjoyable. It's just a great action movie that you can shut your brain off to and have fun. I will echo that the new Dredd is *REALLY* good and much better than this, but I still like this movie for what it is and I love that you're going back-to-back with this and then 'Dredd'. Really good decision in my opinion.

    Stallone said "Yo" primarily in his Rocky films. I am not sure he used that trademark expression in any of his other films because it was a personality trait of his Rocky character. Karl Urban has been in a number of entertaining films including the Star Trek franchise, the Lord of the Rings (Two Towers and Return of the King), Red, and one of the Bourne films.

    I took a girlfriend to see this in the theater back on the day and we found it to be an okay movie.
    I wasn't happy that he took his helmet off but I understood actor vanity and I didn't like the addition of the ABC robot as they are from far in the past in the comic book's timeline.
    The modern, Karl Urban, _'DREDD'_ is much more faithful to the comic books.

      Not really, in terms of being in tune with the comics the movies are about the same. A key thing is that the 1995 version has maybe 30% of the satire of the source material, the 2012 version maybe 10%.

Just as the lion/wolf is choosing its own death with dignity, The walk into the Scorched Earth is the same thing.

  • @robertedwards3551

    Not a remake. The first gets slagged off but its quite close to the early, sillier comics from the 70's & 80's (e.g. Walter the Wobot and Dredd's housekeeper) where the violence was a counterpoint and yes Dredd was seen without his helmet but in silhouette. The 2012 Dredd is very much 90's & 2000's where it was reproduced in colour print and the violence seemed more graphic but the humour remained. 2012 Dredd is the best though.

    They built about six Lawmaster bikes for this: four with 30cc strimmer engines that could barely move, and were just for actors to arrive and leave on, and a couple with 650cc trail bike engines for the stunt guys. Sly wasn't impressed with the low-powered one, insisted on test-riding the 650cc version, rode it around the yard at the studios a couple of times, then promptly rode it out of the gate and off down the public road. The stunt director and the producer looked at each other for a stunned moment and said something like "shit, that thing isn't even remotely street-legal!" before the stunt director jumped on the other one and chased off after Sly along the Engish country roads to get him back before he got arrested.
    They had the prop bikes at the NEC Motorbike Show in Birmingham that year. They were very disappointing when you could see them up close under harsh lighting: the fact that they were all just slapped together from foam and gaffer tape was painfully apparent. A good lesson in how effective 'movie magic' (i.e. lighting and cinematography) is...
