John man! I didnt realize you were a cook, thats awesome! Well, its not that I have allergies to it, but I did just finish a bike race about 3 hours before this video and (I dont know about you but) man MSG never ever leaves me feeling hydrated and refreshed thats for sure :) :) In a situation where I need to be recovering, Im gonna choose to eat as cleanly as possible (even at a roadside restaurant :) ). Man, about the isolation, stay strong John, many people on this side of the world also getting "the virus" again and again... keep your head up! Good to see you again.
Wow Tony man, I appreciate that! Thank you for a great comment! I hope youre enjoying a great Sunday evening, I hope youre excited for the new week to come.
Joel.... In Thailand 🇹🇭 have they started using paper straws for drinking juice instead of plastic straws to reduce plastic usage. In Kerala India almost 80% of the juice shops nowadays use paper straws
Kochi you’re awesome man!! Always here with a good comment, thank you for taking the time to write today. Do you know in Thailand, I gotta say yes this has been normal for a long time but of course there are still some restaurants that use plastic straws.

Sheilaaaa hahah well, for me its about 300km so... its not next door for me either :) a worthwhile road trip, for sure! Have a great day, thanks for watching this video!
I love those little "Makwan" peppercorns! Some of the best Laarb Lanna I've had has these sprinkled on top. That Beautiful, old shop house on Tha Phae road, Kiti Panit, has this kind of fried chicken with the "spice berries." I'm sure it's great but $$$ so, I've never tried it. (I think Mark Wiens did an episode there, so glad that building has been restored.) Love the aerial views, what a beautiful place! My wife LOVES that stuffed bitter gourd soup!! She saw me watching this, through the door and stopped to come in when she saw that lid come off the steamer! Oh! THANK YOU for warning folk about the chicken bones!! I think you are the only "vlogger" of Thai food who has mentioned these dangerous, little shards of surprise (to the unknowing.) This is the one big bummer for me with Thai cuisine, the way they shatter those chicken bones!
Don!!!! Hey hey mannnnn! ok ok, first of all, just in case anyone else reads this, these are NOT Ma-Kwhen :). This is Ma-Kuang, to my knowledge only available from somewhere around Thoen District Lampang, up into the town, and then over to Phrae province. No other Northern Thai friend Ive ever asked has ever eaten these (maybe only an avid reader/home chef would have heard of them, but even then hard to actually get their hands on them!). So, ok theres that :). This is a totally unique recipe, this is not MaKwen... BUT I see youve given a great recommendation, oh man!!! I wouldnt make a video there (as Mark already has), but Im gonna go there for some Laap oh man! Very much in the mood :)
hahaha man you always give so much in your comments. Yeah... the bones... ahhhh. Gets me even more with duck, since theres proportionally I think even more shards compared to meat (or a "home chicken" like this one, less meat, and therefore more bones per bite), sometimes its almost heart breaking to puncture a gum :) :) just when the flavor was at its best! Boom! Bleeding... and looking for somewhere to spit... politely. :)
Ivan Alessandro -- Joel woah man, I remember the food of Sukhothai province, Sukhothai New night market... what a blessing.. I've never been to this area because I was on a pilgrimage on foot (well, trains and buses and minivans, but no private car) it was February 2020 (!!!) Sukhothai and Kampaeng Phet were deserted (because of the very start of the Corona pandemic) thank you for this series of videos, taking me back to the most beautiful and meaningful days of my life in Sukhothai 🙏 ... take care Joel and Li and BruCrew 🙏
IVAN! Man :) :) Now I realize yesterday why I recognized your thumbnail! haha... TH-cam has now changed the studio layout, now it shows only the given unique screenname, no real names anymore. AWESOME memory sharing about Sukhothai, thats so cool that you got to know this place, and even in a way that let you see it for what it would look like without any tourism (a silver lining to the world of almost-no-more-backpacking-tourism for 3 years). You are most welcome, and I am glad to be able to share this one! (The next video is IN Sukhothai
Love that! Anthony, Ive been doing the single handful of peanuts with a cup of coffee before riding, thats it, and its working out great for zone 1-2 steady base building rides
Man oh man, answering this comment last of the whole video because its the hardest question!!! Ok, I honestly did think of this twice yesterday, answering with all honesty. Here you go - YES, in terms of flavor, yes. Definitely equal. In terms of foodie experience, in terms of street food vibes, in terms of passion shared... all of that bonus stuff, good stuff, NO, not even close. The fact that we took a road trip was cool for us, but actually there's no atmosphere here at all :) hahah, the sheer unique factor of the dish is pretty much all that it has. A one-of-a-kind meal is of course, one of a kind, but no, talking about across the board awesomeness, no way, actually I can even think of THREE places in HatYai that are worth the road trip more than this place.
David, man oh man! Awesome to see you as always, AND thank you for a great question today... let me check :) ... (Wikipedia) I can't tell you for sure, but it was one of the first that's for sure :) 1938 extending out past metro Bangkok. Cheers David!
Hi Kris!! Yes I usually order things with no MSG (if possible), sorry to hear about the allergy. No, I don’t think I’m allergic, but simply for the natural aspect, and I look at the back of the bottles of sauces commonly used in fried dishes (all over, not only Thailand) and oyster sauce also usually has MSG in it as well…
Scott, happy Monday man! Thanks for always cheering for Team Chicken, haha they didnt serve chicken feet with this but... hey I dont know, should they?!
I think that fruit is called Limetta. Or "Mosambi" here in the Deccan region of the Indian subcontinent, because it was brought by Portuguese traders from Mozambique. In Summer you can find local street vendors everywhere here selling Mosambi Juice, which I'm guessing you'll discover on your next India trip ;-) You are right that it tastes a little like grapefruit. Fanta UK has a Pineapple & Grapefruit flavour which tastes very similar to Mosambi.
I have never done this, not yet :). But actually man, I went back and found that 3 years ago I "rode 555km for (another) grilled chicken," I actually went back and checked my riding speeds and route and everything :) hahah. Rene, have a great day man!!! Thanks for always being here.

I am learning to really appreciate your emoji sentences, I always like looking up those… Hey man, chicken cheers, the beauty of the Rice field is glowing, and we are very happy to share it with you.
Oh my! You have good eyes, or you were just lucky (or! You already know a lot about Thai food). That’s great that you pick this one because yes, Laura, this kind of restaurant you can expect rat or many animals. Actually, there are many jungle food items here (for which “field rat” is one of the top choices!)
@@JoelsTastyRide I never picked or went to this restaurant….I know that Thais eat rats….which is pretty common amongst destitute people who have no money….but not usually meal of choice for people who have a choice 😉
My pleasure!! Malisa, I am very happy to see you again for another video so soon, thanks for getting back on track and thank you for your long time support of me and my work here
ฅ^˙Ⱉ˙^ฅ JB here is all of my Thailand Street Food recommendations for you: Phad Thai, Pak Krapow, Panang Curry, Sai Oua (Sausage), Sticky rice, Pla Chon Pao (Snake head fish), Roti Mataba, Kanom Jeeb, Kaw Moo Yang (Grilled pork neck), Beef Laab, (Laab/Larb/Laap), Yam Mama (Noodles), Fried Cempedak (Fried fruit), Snake fruit, Haw Mok, Som Tam (Sallad Mix), Gai Yang (Grilled Chicken), Sa Sa-Leum (Buffalo steak strips), Goy (Raw Beef Esaan), Gaeng Jued Mara, Sueah Rong-Hai (Crying Tiger), Palo, Gaeng Hung Lay (Northern Thai Dish).
This is so good :) It seems to me like you have both experience in the North and in Esaan (same two regions that I have also called home at one time or another :) :) there is no dish on the list that I havent tried many times over but, your list here is a great reminder that EVEN dishes we know can have so much variation in Thailand depending on where you have them. After now visiting over 40 countries just for food-finding missions, Ive still never found a place where wild and delicious food is more easily accessible than it is in Thailand.

My rule for coffee (including chocolate) is 9:30 am.... 😂😂
That’s a good good rule :-) let me just ask - what if you wake up at 9 AM? I mean, maybe late, but it does happen sometimes….
@@JoelsTastyRide Haha yeah you're right! Once in a great while that does happen so I sometimes stretch it out to 10:00 am! 🤪
Is there Rat meat on the menu?
Thanks for sharing your videos joel

This is so good :) It seems to me like you have both experience in the North and in Esaan (same two regions that I have also called home at one time or another :) :) there is no dish on the list that I havent tried many times over but, your list here is a great reminder that EVEN dishes we know can have so much variation in Thailand depending on where you have them. After now visiting over 40 countries just for food-finding missions, Ive still never found a place where wild and delicious food is more easily accessible than it is in Thailand.
Just in case anyone is reading this, and is curious...
