After spinal fusion my surgeon strongly suggested I get one of these. I really really appreciate this detailed review. I have to admit I did test out the Hydrow at Best Buy a couple days ago and it was extremely smooth and felt fantastic and the monitor was crystal clear and it was comfortable It gives me a lot to think about for sure. Still haven’t decided.
@Glenn Sveum I've had 3...actually, 4 spine surgeries if you include my 3 level neck fusion too. (3 level fusion L2-L5, spondylolithsis, scoliosis.. all done in the same week, all lower spine) I got blessings from both my orthopedic surgeons to get the Concept2. I've had both my shoulders done, I'm recovering right now from my 2nd to last ortho surgery, my left shoulder this time. I had a bad accident. 😖 I just keep telling my PT to make it so I can row again. I'm raring to go. I sit and do leg drills right now on my rower. Good luck, if I can row anyone can row.
Good detail...but to not mention the weight of each and ease of moving around is a bit of a miss. The Hydrow is almost 200 lbs fully equipped. So getting it upstairs or moving around is a for a strong person(s). Also, how each rower comes and how much of an install out of the box (or delivery option) is necessary, is important...the Nordic Track requires a good deal of installation.
I'm a beginner, have NordicTrack treadmill and iFit subscription. Thought about going with NT since I have the sub but looks like NordicTrack rower has some limitations. Do you think it would be a good compromise, for a beginner, to go with a proven product like Concept 2 and simply add an iPad to access tutorials/workouts from iFit?
The only issue we see is since your iFit subscription is registered through your treadmill, you won't have access to the rowing classes. I'd recommend going online to see if you can access iFit rowing classes via your tablet or phone. If that works, then yes, that's a great solution.
I was going to ask the same question - however, I’m a newbie without any rowing experience and without iFit subscription. I know there are bike rides on TH-cam that can be accessed while riding your indoor bike - I bet there are also destination videos for people rowing indoors as well?
I liked your review, I wouldn't have minded to see some options from Nordictrack that would have been more of a middle ground on price and performance, such as the RW600 or RW700 as they would have been a bit of a step up from the C2, without going all out on the Hydrow and offering an equivalent experience. I much prefer the Nordictrack as you can combine the yearly fee (which is only $250) across treadmills, bikes, and rowers. You won't find that with many other companies (Peloton is getting there, but their treadmill was a disaster for some folks both in deliveries and safety).
Tried the Hydrow displayed in Best Buy now and its nice, but $2200 plus a monthly fee no thank you. Should just give you the rower if you are going to have to pay for it for life. Ill stick with my Concept 2
Was about to get an almost new Nordictrack but this review points out the lower point of emergence of Chain that makes you hunch if you’re tall. Decided to avoid on that basis. Thanks
@@victoriabaratta2260 hi Victoria , I would advise you to look out for a used concept 2 in reasonable condition/almost new. Ask buyer for proof of purchase. Reason being you’ll save enormously on new and machine is easily serviced and parts are cheap. I bought used one that had 20 million metres. Now, if back issues are a worry you really want to explore dynamic rowing machines. I’d recommend Oartec DX , they’re high quality plus you can use Concept 2 monitors(buy separately) on them which is crucial IMHO for tracking progress/keeping motivated with their online logbook.
Good review. So, let me just mention that I’m a big fan of NT. I think the S22i in my opinion is the best realistic feel cycling bike at this time, it makes the Peloton feel like a standard bike for its price range. Anyway, I’ve used all these machines mentioned above. Hydrow is the best right now, in my opinion. It feels solid, smooth and realistic feel to it like you’re actually rowing. Not to mention it has an option to choose JOURNEYS in your screen without trainer, feeling like you’re actually rowing at different places. It’s never boring and extremely motivating. I would buy Hydrow for $3,000.00 lol. It’s that good and not to mention getting a full body workout. Now, if you don’t care for technology and other bells and whistles, just get the concept2 , just row. Hydrow also has an option to just Row if you don’t want subscription. Thank you for the review, I’m glad I got the Hydrow.
@@robertm1692 Negative Sir. You probably misinformed. You won’t have the live workout/music videos, racing challenges, ability to compete to other users, etc.... to some people the videos and different levels of workout they get from a subscription motivate them more or the only way for them to actually move and use the machine, the “fun factor”. Without subscription, you can still have a full screen that shows you the adjustments resistance, drag , metrics while working out and a tutorial video. So, basically, without subscription you have a big screen digital information just like Concept 2 with a tiny screen display. My question is, why would someone buy a $2000.00+ Rowing machine and not able to spend subscription to it and just wants to row? In my humble opinion, just get the Concept2 if none of the technology matters as much. It’s like buying a $90,000.00 high performance truck with 700 hp and complaining about the price of gas lol.
@@ixibladeixi2639 I was thinking more along the lines about wether I could use the monitor to connect to the internet via wifi. Then I could take advantage of some of the hundreds of free rowing videos that are online.
@@robertm1692 I see what you’re saying, but it defeats the purpose of the machine affiliations to the company and the trainers that are designed with it. Trainers and staff members from specific rowing machine videos have to get paid. For instance, I have the S22i Bike from Nordictrack. The app ifit is awesome and it’s designed to their S22i so that the bike adjusts on it’s own controlled by the trainer you’re trying to follow while working out. You can download the app on your phone and on television but you gonna have to adjust the resistance and incline/decline option on your own. Then it becomes a standard bike. Again, why buy something that the features they designed won’t be used. Like I said, with concept 2, you can take advantage of what you just mentioned and just row. With the Hydrow, not only that you can take advantage on hundreds of free videos online using your 75 inch TV, while choosing “Just Row” option and still able to use their own system designed if you want to switch. If you can hack the system, I’m sure you can do anything you want. I’ve seen people downloaded Peloton app in their NordicTrack. Everything is possible, but at this time, if you’re looking to get the Hydrow, you can’t use the monitor to connect to the internet.
Thank you so much for this! I'm looking for an entry-level rower but don't have the budget for the Hydrow yet and also have a great aversion to loud noise. Ultimately I think I'd love the Hydrow. So Nordictrack it is! I found one very lightly used for less than half the new price and plan to go test it out and hopefully buy it. Thanks again,
I'm looking to purchase and need some advice. I am a large man (picture defensive end/lineman), I am willing to spend for a quality machine. Noise and space aren't deal breakers but quieter the better. I see proprietary memberships as extortion, I purchased the machine allow me to use it how I wish, and do not limit function to reach into my wallet. 1st choice (by far would have been) the larger Hydrow but the deal breaker is not being able to hook ANYTHING to that screen. The screen is utterly useless if I don't have the membership. The membership feels like product extortion. So to hell with Hydrow. Is there another rower like the Hydrow with a nice screen but without the extortion? The ironic part is I probably would've purchased the membership anyhow but they chose to limit my choice. 2nd Choice NordicTrack. I could easily buy a larger notebook or tablet (If it would fit) to go with it so I can watch what I choose. But the weight limit is 250 pounds. If it wasn't for the weight limit I would've purchased it already. 3rd Choice Concept 2 Reliability, Durability, tried-and-true. Can easily handle my big body. Does the screen arm move completely out of the way or can I amount a tablet or something to it?
being in the spirit of the concept 2 does not mean it will perform like a concept 2, the advantage of air is you cant out muscle the resistance, pull harder and it gets harder, with magnetism there is a point where if you pull hard enough you can often break the magnetic force... this has never been a point of discussion with the hydro though and ive never used it so it seems whatever it does it does it well and probably solved that problem.
I have been studying rowers for a while now. Thank you for your impartial review! Before viewing I was considering the NT -vs- Hydro for costs, but I believe the Hydro is my personal front runner. Thanks again!
Get on their Wait List. Took about 6-7 weeks for my order to be ready, but it was simple and easy once the time came. Just got mine last week, ordered on Monday and delivered on Friday!
I love the concept 2, no subscription and you don't have to plug it in. What happens if the power went out in your home? Keep it simple and go with the concept 2
You are correct. Shortly after we completed this video, NordicTrack stopped selling the RW500. They now have the RW600 which is essentially the same frame with an updated console that includes a touchscreen. We hope to get one of those in soon for a video review.
Most people will not be able to "out row" the NT500. It has an air resistance flywheel like the C2 so it will generate power commiserate with the power of your stroke. However, the flywheel is slightly smaller on the NT500 (compared to the C2), so those who are very strong and/or have a powerful stroke may be able to pull past the point of resistance. However, the magnetic resistance will counteract this since it has magnetic resistance built in as well.
Hello, which rowing machine is better in terms of resistance force and other properties; Nordictrack RX800 or Schwinn rower? Both are the same price, which one is worth it price? Thanks!
A useful comparison of the 3 machines but you don't get the high and low arm motions you use with oars on a racing shell. The only one I found that comes close to a real rowing experience is the Biorower. Unfortunately, it is very expensive, costing $6000 for the cheaper Club model and over $10,000 for the Pro model, plus of course the shipping cost. Dealers are available in the US and a few other countries.
You mention that a subscription is required, but how usable is the Nordic without it? Can you operate it similarly to the concept 2 when the subscription runs out?
Yes, the NordicTrack basically becomes just like the C2 if you don't use iFit. It has a digital console that provides rowing metrics similar to the C2 PM5.
What if I want to buy the hydrow and don't care about the subscription. Can I just use it to row? Is there an option to have preloaded lakes on it to row by myself with no subscription?
I wish you showed the SPM while measuring the DB level. From what I can tell, it looked like you were going slower on the Hydrow compared to the other two rowers. The slower you go the quieter the rower will be.
At the time we made the video, the RW500 was the most popular rower in Nordictrack's lineup, so we compared that one. Nordictrack doesn't offer the RW500 anymore, but currently has both the RW600 and RW700 which are a step up from the RW500 and also sell well bc of the reasonable price point.
Concept 2 is like the a the Cadillac or high end Toyota of rowing machines. Hydrow is like Telsa needs electricity and internet net. I love my Concept 2 rower. Dependable. If it was a man I would marry it!
If your glutes aren't hurting or you aren't getting tired then you either aren't using it correctly or it's not doing what it's supposed to. So either you aren't working hard enough or using the correct technique or the machine isn't allowing you to whether that be due to lack of resistance or ergonomics.
a missed opportunity from hydrow for not offering a similar console like the concept2 in terms of information and just have the subscription as an extra. I would pay the triple price for the "prettier" hardware but especially the silent rowing
It is possible to use the Hydrow without a subscription in what's called "Just Row mode". You get metrics in that mode so you can use in that way pretty much but it's kind of a waste imo if you don't get the subscription with how much it costs. Still if you're willing to pay it can be used like that.
I feel like the review of the noise of the Concept2 is a bit exaggerated. If you have a gym in your garage, it’s not a problem at all for your family inside the house. It’s not so loud you can’t have a conversation (although you’ll likely be out of breath). The only place I’d say it might be too loud would be in an apartment sharing common walls but honestly I think the vibration of any of these would piss off your neighbors before any of the noise. Also, the room flooring makes a big difference with any of these: bare concrete vs carpet or rubber mats.
That is a testament to the poor build quality that Icon Health and Fitness (owner of NordicTrack brand) puts into their products. Their customer service is even worse than the build quality of their products. Avoid at all costs.
@@saulger6409 It makes sense though I'm sure there are ways to maintain the airflow and reduce the sound. If you design a couple of big wholes for the machine to breath and make a larger case with sound foam inside I'm sure that would absorb some of it
@@IReapZz95 It's not loud at all. I use mine on carpet so maybe that's why mine is so quite. I keep mine in the great room behind the sectional. My husband watches TV while I row and he doesn't turn the sound up. Maybe it's because of the carpet or because my machine is new. Either way it's no where near as loud as some make it out to be.
It’s worth it, it’s per rower not per person, my parents and I use it, and we can create three separate profiles while still only paying 38 bucks which technically is only about 12 bucks per person
@@123n4m If there is a group chipping in on it maybe that would be ok. But for a single person that is a crazy money. there is plenty of free training videos on TH-cam
The RW900 is a great rower with a nice attached screen. The content is similar. Hydrow instructors are a bit more rowing-specific and we enjoy their routes a bit more. But the RW900 is great - especially if you already have a Nordictrack machine. You'll only need one subscription.
@@TreadmillReviewGuru thank you for this comment. I purchased the RW900 in January and I love it because we also have an Norditrack incline trainer treadmill and with the included additional videos on iFit for strength training and yoga, we feel like we have the perfect home gym.
Concept 2 is no louder than a vacuum cleaner. In today's world there's a wealth of information and online videos that can teach/motivate you so I don't know why the Concept 2 was recommended for people who already know how to row or why anyone would bother spending twice as much on another rower just because it has a screen when you have a cell phone or TV. Save your money and just get a Concept 2 and watch TH-cam videos if you need motivation or to learn... A subscription that's as much or more than a typical gym membership is just unnecessary.
Thanks for that feedback! We're actually in the process of updating this review so it's a little more aligned with what you just explained so that was very helpful feedback, thank you!
Exactly. Also factor in the ability to get replacement parts for every piece on a C2 at affordable prices. The resale is great too since they are the gold standard in the rowing community.
My Concept2 is very quiet, I use it in the same room while my husband watches TV. It's only 5 dB more than the other rowers. Negligible. Olympic athletes train on the Concept2 as do all the colleges and universities. I put a cell phone in the brackets above the PM5 and follow along with Dark Horse Rowing on YT. You can get an adapter that will hold a tablet. Height matters, if your quite tall the Concept2 will accommodate you, if you're short, like me 5-1 then you'll be fine too. My son was a rower (he still rows, actually) and the coaches let the moms use the rowers when the boys were out on the water. I didn't realize you could actually buy one for your own home. I have one now and I'm very happy. 😊

$2200 PLUS $38 monthly membership?! My Concept2 was about $800 back in 2006. It is still going strong. This sounds more like an infomercial than a review.
The Concept 2 is a fantastic rower. This video is designed to provide a comparative review of three different types of rowers: the fully tech enabled Hydrow, hybrid magnetic/air resistance RW500, or standard air-resistance C2 rower. The review is helpful to those who are considering a rower and would like to see the different options. Hopefully this helps you understand the principle of a comparative review.

I have to admit I did test out the Hydrow at Best Buy a couple days ago and it was extremely smooth and felt fantastic and the monitor was crystal clear and it was comfortable It gives me a lot to think about for sure. Still haven’t decided.
Good luck with your search. Let us know which model you decide to get!
I really appreciate your review, thank you. This was very well done with all the right information.
what an amazing thorough review. I love this woman.
It's worth mentioning that the concept 2 can link with tons of programs/subscriptions and has mounts for phone, tablet, etc
Best review I’ve seen. Thank you for unbiased and thorough review
I appreciate that!
Use a smartphone or tablet and TH-cam is free. No need to spend twice as much for redundant technology.
New to rowing. This was very helpful. Tyvm!
Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
How tall we talking for the Nordic track? 6'1" too tall!
I’m 5’ and my husband is 6’1” would that lower chain entrance thingy be a problem for us??
So the monitor can be used without the subscription? I've heard that rowers with included monitors are just blank screens without the subscription.
Thanks again,
Thanks for watching!
You must hate vacuuming then because those are much louder than a Concept 2. Noise, at least for me, is only bothersome if I'm not the one making it.
I've been researching what to buy for a while...this was very helpful! Thanks for the review.
Glad it was helpful!
I have a domyos 500b rower it would be good to see what you think of domyos
I do wish Concept2 would create a rower in the spirit of the ModelD but with magnetic resistance for quiet home use.
being in the spirit of the concept 2 does not mean it will perform like a concept 2, the advantage of air is you cant out muscle the resistance, pull harder and it gets harder, with magnetism there is a point where if you pull hard enough you can often break the magnetic force... this has never been a point of discussion with the hydro though and ive never used it so it seems whatever it does it does it well and probably solved that problem.
I have been studying rowers for a while now. Thank you for your impartial review! Before viewing I was considering the NT -vs- Hydro for costs, but I believe the Hydro is my personal front runner. Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful! I personally LOVE the Hydrow.
I’m inexperienced but I’m gonna purchase the concept2.
You can't go wrong with the Concept 2. It is an industry favorite for a reason. Enjoy!
@@TreadmillReviewGuru just have to wait until it comes back in stock lol 😜
Get on their Wait List. Took about 6-7 weeks for my order to be ready, but it was simple and easy once the time came. Just got mine last week, ordered on Monday and delivered on Friday!

I love the concept 2, no subscription and you don't have to plug it in. What happens if the power went out in your home? Keep it simple and go with the concept 2
Power went? Rowing will be the last thing on your mind
@@sonny5196 I use my excercise equipment when power is out no worrys here
Thank you for the best review so far. Not trying to sell but to inform. Unfortunately they do not sell the RW500 anymore
You are correct. Shortly after we completed this video, NordicTrack stopped selling the RW500. They now have the RW600 which is essentially the same frame with an updated console that includes a touchscreen. We hope to get one of those in soon for a video review.
The RW500 can be found, such as at BestBuy. Not a price discount but immediate delivery.
Ordered the RW700 this evening. I will let you know how it works out. I would have liked the Concept 2 but it was a 2 month waiting period
@TreadmillReviewGuru can you go pretty much all out on the norditrack like you can with the concept2?
Most people will not be able to "out row" the NT500. It has an air resistance flywheel like the C2 so it will generate power commiserate with the power of your stroke. However, the flywheel is slightly smaller on the NT500 (compared to the C2), so those who are very strong and/or have a powerful stroke may be able to pull past the point of resistance. However, the magnetic resistance will counteract this since it has magnetic resistance built in as well.
What does "outrow the machine" mean? Does it start smoking?
Hello, which rowing machine is better in terms of resistance force and other properties; Nordictrack RX800 or Schwinn rower? Both are the same price, which one is worth it price? Thanks!
We haven't tested either of those machines, sorry :( We're hoping to get the Schwinn in sometime soon to test and review it!
Thank you so much for the wonderful and informative review.✌️
You mention that a subscription is required, but how usable is the Nordic without it? Can you operate it similarly to the concept 2 when the subscription runs out?
According to the website, it has 30 built in programs that you can use without the subscription
Yes, the NordicTrack basically becomes just like the C2 if you don't use iFit. It has a digital console that provides rowing metrics similar to the C2 PM5.
Can someone tell me about the person doing this review? Is she a professional rower? How much experience does she have in rowing?
Can you walk on an assault fitness treadmill?
Thank you for the excellent review.
any feedback from the BodyCraft VR500 Rower?
What if I want to buy the hydrow and don't care about the subscription. Can I just use it to row? Is there an option to have preloaded lakes on it to row by myself with no subscription?
Presently there's not, but Hydrow is adding a manual row option soon.
Could you guys please review a waterrower?
I am very happy with my waterrower, I used to row on a concept 2 at my training facility before covid. And it was half the price of the concept 2..
I like my WaterRower and its unique design.
Thank you. I’ve been back and forth and this helped.
I wish you showed the SPM while measuring the DB level. From what I can tell, it looked like you were going slower on the Hydrow compared to the other two rowers. The slower you go the quieter the rower will be.
Why use the bottom line nordic to compare with the hydrow? WHy not compare with the RW900?
At the time we made the video, the RW500 was the most popular rower in Nordictrack's lineup, so we compared that one. Nordictrack doesn't offer the RW500 anymore, but currently has both the RW600 and RW700 which are a step up from the RW500 and also sell well bc of the reasonable price point.
I thought the same.
we have a hydrow and it folds the screen a little bit for storage
I just pick up a nordic track 300 is it any good
We haven't tested that machine, so I don't have any information on that one, sorry.
good , thorough video. thank u
Concept 2 is like the a the Cadillac or high end Toyota of rowing machines. Hydrow is like Telsa needs electricity and internet net.
I love my Concept 2 rower. Dependable. If it was a man I would marry it!
Haha, thanks for that insight! That's a great comparison!
Excellent review. Thanks for all the info
Glad it was helpful!
@@devantetoppin7879 yeah although the metrics it provides in the just row mode are pretty useless sot between that and the cost its not worth it
Awesome, thanks for this review!
Thanks for watching!
Great overview of the three top rowers. 'Must watch' if you are considering a rower (as I am). Well done!!
Thanks! I'm glad the review is helpful!
Great review, very helpful and thorough.
Screw the subscription. I don't want to be an indebted slave to a machine.
You needed to add the Aviron rower to this review.
7:16 the screen on the Nordictrack shakes quite a bit.
That is a testament to the poor build quality that Icon Health and Fitness (owner of NordicTrack brand) puts into their products. Their customer service is even worse than the build quality of their products. Avoid at all costs.
Is the Nordic track Bluetooth and ANT+ compatible?
The NT is Bluetooth enabled, but does not sync with ANT+ devices.
@@TreadmillReviewGuru thanks for the great reviews. I haven't used but the water rower and the Concept 2. Like bot for different reasons.

Can you do a review of a water rower
We're working on getting one!
Nice review. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Concept2 everything else is a waste of money!
8:55 Skip to the conclusion.
nobody has designed a 3d printed case for the fly wheel for the concept2 with sound dampening materials around it to reduce that sound?
Javier, you need the air flow, so noise is not optional.
I would definitely buy the Hydrow if the $38/month was optional. I don’t like the forced monthly subscription.
$38/month subscription is insane
It’s worth it, it’s per rower not per person, my parents and I use it, and we can create three separate profiles while still only paying 38 bucks which technically is only about 12 bucks per person
@@123n4m If there is a group chipping in on it maybe that would be ok. But for a single person that is a crazy money. there is plenty of free training videos on TH-cam
She should show how it folds
Neat info. Thanks!
What about RW900 & Hydrow?
The RW900 is a great rower with a nice attached screen. The content is similar. Hydrow instructors are a bit more rowing-specific and we enjoy their routes a bit more. But the RW900 is great - especially if you already have a Nordictrack machine. You'll only need one subscription.
@@TreadmillReviewGuru thank you for this comment. I purchased the RW900 in January and I love it because we also have an Norditrack incline trainer treadmill and with the included additional videos on iFit for strength training and yoga, we feel like we have the perfect home gym.
big thanks!!!!
Glad it helped!
The Hydrow does NOT require Wi-Fi; it will also accept a wired ethernet connection.
Thanks Patrick! Good to know. Our point is you need some sort of connection to the internet to be able to access the Hydrow programming.

The resale is great too since they are the gold standard in the rowing community.
anybody know of a concept 2 but silent without giving up any of their benefits or horribly overpriced and stupid subscriptions
“among the three rowers,” not “between the three rowers” 🥰

$2200 PLUS $38 monthly membership?! My Concept2 was about $800 back in 2006. It is still going strong. This sounds more like an infomercial than a review.
The Concept 2 is a fantastic rower. This video is designed to provide a comparative review of three different types of rowers: the fully tech enabled Hydrow, hybrid magnetic/air resistance RW500, or standard air-resistance C2 rower. The review is helpful to those who are considering a rower and would like to see the different options. Hopefully this helps you understand the principle of a comparative review.
