Real quick, that version of the Xtherm you have has an R-Value of 6.9. When you bought it, it was rated as a 4.7(?), but a new standard came along and under the new rating system, it's a 6.9. So warmer than you think! And the switchback has an R-Value of 2.
Wow - you're totally right! There was a, Great R-Value Shift! I had no idea! I guess the bigger change from the OG XTherm to the XTherm NXT is weight and loft!
Tell UD to make the dang FK Tarp again!!!!
RIGHT?!
Borah Gear in Montana makes a stupidly light DCF tarp (7.5' X 9') 5.8oz.
*excellent* - I’ll check it out
@@TheLongRanger it doesn't have the same structure as the FK Tarp, but I'm thinking a Holden configuration would give you the same result.
P.S. Any extra bonus tips to reduce moisture in a bivy? Every time i sleep out under the stars on top of a tall thing i wake up and my sleeping bag is pretty wet. Maybe I just need to find something even more breathable...that survival zone bivy looks pretty sweet for the "long n quick" side of things...
P.P.S...maybe i missed it, but what do you use for a groundsheet? (If anything)
Is the bag/bivy getting wet from you, or from condensation around you? If it's from you, well: I run pretty warm myself and am usually perspiring, so this is an issue I've had to address for sure! The bivy most def. has to be breathable. This Rab bivi is not super breathable, but looks like it works for me. I've used more waterproof, less breathable bags and it's a drench fest. Ultimate Direction used to make the FK Bivy - another great piece of gear, that was even MORE breathable and I loved it (not so much water resistant at all!). Look for something simple, made of a thin nylon, and not something like a Gore-Tex fabric. Some come with a full zip to keep the air flow going.
