1450bhp F1 BMW Turbo

  • The Don Mega of F1, the most powerful & raw, so good it had to be effectively banned by first draconian fuel restrictions, then finally boost limits. Same happened to the dominant Offy in the early mid 70's, same to Toyota in IMSA GTP, its a little known fact the 4 cyl turbo is so superior a concept that even Toyota was refused to run a modern day version of the Offy at Indianapolis 500 late last century. Such is the total domination and fear with rivals that even in the introduction of the new version of F1 turbo era Ferrari threatened to quit the sport if 4cyl turbos were adopted (pushed by BMW and others). Think about that next time you wonder how shit modern F1 sounds and why the cry babies all through history resort to the rule book and under the table bribes to stop the best from competing.....
Some technical stats compiled in here and just listen to it, the best ever!

Worse than that, it has a huge lag, you have to anticipate when the demon is released. N Pique said (if I do not mistake the F1 guy) that no one drove that at full potential, everybody did what he can. Especially in qual, for just one lap, with a car very different with hundreds of hp more than in race.
I tried those cars in simracing and what I can tell is they are annoying.

It would leave big black marks anywhere you wanted them in qualifying trim. The acceleration was so brutal in cars from this era that the drivers head was thrown forward and then slammed back against the pad on each up shift. It was the most brutal in cars with this engine. As I recall, in 83 BMW had special qualifying motors that did not run a head gasket, because they were running too much boost for it to survive. They sounded good when they fired them up in the pits in the AM. They were running as Megatron in the Arrows in 87. Zakspeed was running a version of this four with their own head. The Toleman Hart, which was Ayrton Senna’s first F1 ride, was also built on this block. Piquet took this engine to a World Championship with Brabham.

Displacement likely, the 4 cylinder has roughly 375cc per cylinder, the V6 has 267cc per cylinder. Bigger displacement sounds deeper and usually more satisfying.

You forgot to mention how these engine blocks were “seasoned.” Besides the BMW 2002 street car engine blocks being left outside in the rain to rust, the employees would literally piss on the blocks, in an effort to enhance the corrosive efforts on the metal, to create stronger blocks. This is one of the secrets BMW used to create an engine that would stand up to such a ludicrous output. I spoke to Nelson Piquet about driving the turbo’s, he said
“tachometer was useless. You stood on the gas, when your heart snapped forward from rev limiter, you shifted up. Your hand literally moved through the gears as fast as you could move.”
    Incredible.

@@tlovsoe4211the guy above is probably joking. Tungsten carbide would not only be heavy and produce valve float at those rpm’s, it’s also brittle and could shatter under those loads. I think the valves were probably titanium, at least the intake ones, since they would be cooled by the fuel. The exhaust valves most probably were inconel, you can see on some photos how hot the exhaust gets, there was probably no other material suitable for that application back then. Basically, it’s like a tiny 4-cylinder top fuel dragster engine, although down tuned for reliability purposes.
