We got our Picard mix 5 years ago at a local Animal Rescue. He is the most amazing dog, he is so loving and smart!

I just found one up for adoption at the shelter and I was so excited! Evidently he was surrendered because he was nipping at their sheep and pulling the wool off. Even though they think he's playing, they decided to give him up - they must have missed, somehow, that these are herding dogs, he's doing what they do. Going to meet him tomorrow, provided he isn't snapped up before then!

Spot on! My Picard is great in my apartment. Even as a puppy he was well behaved. He lives with his 7 lbs chihuahua mix sister. He’s a great watchdog.

How intelligent, mellow, and easygoing is your Picard?
Are they quick to respond to obedience training?
Let us know in the comments!

My pup only barks at balloons and boxes. He’s a great cafe dog. He prefers to not be approached by pets on top of the head. He’s a showstopper, a head turner for sure! People are always commenting on his appearance and may have caused a few fender benders 🤣 He’s affectionate, loves hugs and his children. Extremely intelligent and goofy ❤️

We just brought home BP puppy about a week and a half ago. He has shown very little inclination to bark so far. Update: Our Picard is now almost 18 mo old. He is more vocal than the boxers and bullmastiffs we are used to, but certainly not to the point of being a problem. He is a VERY picky eater. Not at all unusual for him to walk away from a meal untouched or only half finished. Occasionally, he will go nearly 24 hrs without eating unless we "sweeten" the deal somehow. He is very clever, and gets along well with the other dogs at the dog park. (We made a point of starting him there early.) He is our first herding breed, so I could be missing something, but I haven't noticed much herding behavior.

My BP did not bark excessively. She gave a warning bark to company arriving but soon ceased barking.

I actually didn't know what my dog was until I saw a rescue video on You Tube. Was her twin. Mine was a rescue also. I had her two years before I figured out what she was. Stubborn? oh my God yes. But she had such a rough start before I got her. Once she bonded oh, I love her so. Smarter than me, the little snot is. but she doesn't bark hardly at all. Shes a blue grey and I will get another one. I thought she was a corgi crossed with an little merle herding dog. I would not have gotten her spayed if I knew what she was. They are excellent dogs. Independent thinkers and learn very quickly. Don't take to yelling. I got her from a meth head who was going to 'throw her away' Found out later, he had stolen her for her puppies. Once they were gone, he was done with her. Oh yeah, and she was under the bed and went to shake her head. She whipped an ear across one of the bed slats and creased it. If flopped from then on.

Curious if you know this. I was speaking to an owner and was told that about 20% of the Picard's are so shy they don't let you touch them? An inherent trait.

Most Picard’s are very affectionate with their family, their “pack”, but are very wary of strangers. They were bred as perimeter herders, to be watchful and protect, so of course they don’t want some stranger man handling them, at least until they’ve decided you’re okay!

Berger Picard... Berger like like Fabergé...not berzé

It's not Berze! Berger means shepherd, and it's pronounced with a G, not a Z.
