I played golf there in the late 80's & of all the many courses i've played it still sticks in my mind as a memorable place. Crazy thing is I still recommend it to people as a place to play - I wasn't aware of what's happened to it!!

I worked there from 1999-2004 when it closed as a hotel for the first time. It reopened for a short time as a hotel after that but the administrators running it closed it a few years later. The golf courses were kept open until October 2019 when the hotel was given back to its previous owner after a 15 year long court case deciding who owned it. Such a shame of what was a beautiful hotel in its prime.

Hi Martin, your comment has clarified what I was wondering about when I saw the calendar hanging on the wall showing October 2019. Judging from the falling plaster and general bad condition of the building, I knew that it hadn't been used as a hotel for many years. The 15-year court case would probably make for an interesting story on its own! The current owner obviously still cares about his property with the security trailer in front and all of the boarded up windows. I imagine that you also have some entertaining stories about your experience working there!

    • @martinkay6466
      @martinkay6466 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@tonyantonio7104 yes some very entertaining stories from working there. Still probably my most favourite job ever, just for the fun that was had. The current owner has made no intentions for the hotel public at present, he has had offers to buy it but turned them down. Currently there is work being carried out on it but I can't see it ever opening again whilst the owner has it.

@@martinkay6466 Thank you for the response, Martin! I'm glad to know that you really enjoyed working at the hotel. Another contributor to this comment section was kind enough to include a link to the court case regarding the legal owner of this property, which was quite a fascinating read. If I understood this court document correctly, the last year the hotel was open was 2011, which really surprised me when I saw the state of disrepair the building is in now, with plaster falling down in some of the rooms. The most interesting part was that the members of the golf club maintained the golf course at their own expense, so I'm guessing it is held in high regard by many people. It would be ideal if these devoted club members could purchase the property as they would be the ideal stewards for its preservation. As a sidenote, I was surprised to hear that the guys in the video said "ay" instead of "yes" or "yeah" as we do here in the US. I don't know if this is colloquial Scottish English or the norm, but it was quite lovely. Cheers!

What a great explore Alec. It's bloody criminal how these places so often meet their demise. 99% of the time it's government taxes, but in this case I suppose it's just lack of membership fees that have led this place to ruin. Ta for sharing such an interesting location. 🤗

Guys I like the exploring but please. If you pick it up put it back where you found it and if you open it then close it, it's just respect and it teaches the younger generation to do the same. Otherwise keep em coming :) also some narration would be good explaining what you see and any information about the place.

I used to stay here when I worked for Glaxo in the late 90s-2004. Whenever we had to visit the factory at Montrose, Glaxo would put us up here and I always had the bedroom at the front above the main door overlooking the flagpoles. My only other memory is whenever you came back to the hotel there was always a chap who asked if you wanted a nightcap from the bar. We spent some money in that bar on the company card I can tell you! Such a shame to see it like this, I was shocked as it was a lovely place in a lovely area.

Although, the windows and doors are boarded up, the old hotel still looks gorgeous and impressive from the outside. Looking majestic, it has a unique structure of it's own, which is synonymous with buildings built during the 18th hundred. It's a shame to have it neglected and left in shambles, probably by the owner, due to lack of funds, perhaps. The Sottish government should step in and declare the building as a national heritage, restore it to it's former glory and protect it, maybe under the Scotland Heritage Act or whatever Act that falls under the preservation of old building.
Inside, the building has an old forgotten era to it. Most of the walls are covered with wooden panels. The staircase has beautiful intricate barristers carving, which is not commonly seen elsewhere. Most of the furniture are antique looking. At 29:22, beautiful paintings are strewn all over the floor, which should be donated or salvage by the owner. The fire place at 30:06 is unique and one of it's kind. At 56:50 a hanging portrait of an elderly gentlemen hanging at the staircase, could be the original owner of the hotel. Some parts of the building are new additions to the building, like the office area which marred the beauty of the hotel.
I was recommended to this channel, most probably by an unseen force....hahaha. It would be lovely, if Alec communicates often with the viewers, and glide them along in his beautiful adventure, as he moves from one area to another, while at the same time conversing with the viewers........"Here we are folks at the foyer of this beautiful hotel. Some said it's haunted by a.........." Show a little bit of yourself as you speak and joke with the viewers. Your warmth and sincerity will surely attract more viewers. Unless you're camera shy and look like the Phantom of the opera........or Dracula during his bad days. Just kidding. Anyway, I enjoy the journey, thoroughly. Thanks Alec.

I am sick to my back teeth with the number of grand buildings throughout Scotland which are allowed
to fall into a shocking state of repair, often this is intentional so the owners can then knock them
down and sell the land or convert into housing. We spend an absolute fortune maintaining works of art - why
not our historic buildings? One positive note is that after local campaigns Clackmannanshire Council
re-purchased Greenfield House after the owners allowed it to become dangerous and a den for Junkies.
Local Councils need more powers and budget for this type of work. Bugger supporting minority interests like
Scottish Ballet etc and lets have these buildings repurposed for the community.

This hotel probably went under because of the hideous decor. The decor against the amazing wood craftsmanship, was just horrible.

I worked there for years, some of the decor was hideous, the wallpaper you see in the dining room wasn't originally there, the Japanese that owned when I first went there to work in the 80s looked after the place and the staff, then unfortunately Mr liu bought it and run the hotel to the ground.....

Fascinating history! There are many articles online on the history and legal battles over this location. It is hard to follow but overall it appears that a Taiwanese man bought the location originally in 1994 but it went under in 2002 and a liquidator took over and all kinds of legal issues started. Either way the Taiwanese man now got back control over the property after some 15 years. The issue is that in the mean time the building fell in to disrepair and the people who ran the golf course from membership fees have given up on it in November 2019 and so the Golf Course I assume is now abandoned as well so the entire property appears to now be dead. Perhaps the owner wants to redevelop it but considering it in the middle of nowhere it seems very odd.

Really interesting grand old place. I hope it doesn't fall into permanent disrepair. I was, however, a little surprised that one of you lit up a cigarette? I would think that is not the wisest thing to do in such a building as this...for a variety of reasons.
