Interesting video, guys. Thanks for keeping the content and tone respectful. Lots of us have relatives who were sent to these institutions, and died there, for reasons that would never stack up today.
Very much appreciated. A lot of very personal history behind these places. I recently found out my great grandad was in one in Ireland for many decades and likely also died there.
I would love you to do two places Carlton naval mental asylum it is in Glasgow just off Great Western Road some beautiful buildings please reach out to me if you have already done a video on it would be amazing to hear what is inside it and a little bit more the other one would be ravens Craig castle in Kirkcaldy Fife
Back in the 70s I lived in Bonkle just up from Hartwood, as kids our parents often told us if we heard the sirens go off we were too run home as quickly as possible, one day me and two friends were playing in the woods just about ¼ mile away from the asylum, we were playing at a some stream when we saw what looked like a football sticking out the banking, my friend went to pick it up as Bonkle AFC football club was just across the road as he bent down too pick it up his fingers entered two eye sockets, it was a skull, long story short, it was the head of a nurse who was murdered by one of the patients who had escaped, lots of people walked the road back then, but with the amount of wooded areas, it wouldn't have been hard for someone to hide, we even made the local press Wishaw Press, obviously they're is lot more detail than I've put here but thought you'd be interested
Brilliant. My great aunt was matron of the Three Counties Asylum in Carmarthenshire. Not much of it left now but I seem to remember a clock tower there too.
Interesting and very atmospheric…the ballroom and library were stunning in 2019 and still are, although the decay in such a short space of time is unbelievable. It will make a beautiful home although not sure I would feel that comfortable in it 😬Hopefully, the conversions will be sympathetic as the architecture and original features of these buildings are beautiful and on a scale we will not see again. Thank you guys for another great video ❤
I did part of my training in Rosslynlea, and if only it had been as good at keeping patients in, like it stops folks getting into it today, I would not be telling this tale! A young female patient who was dedicated in escape tactics, was the bane of my life! She'd get out, and took great delight in running along the old railway line, which was usually covered in wet mud! After I managed to get near, she'd laugh and say that she would do the same the following day!! The state that we both found ourselves, did nothing to stop me wanting to put her in a strait-jacket! Ha-ha!
That was fantastic guys. If only you'd been able to get into them all it would have been award winning. I'm Scottish and very proud of my Country. New subscriber 👍👍👍💯💯👍👍👍
You guys win the prize for being the most compassionate explorers of the old asylums! Yes, these places were pretty nasty at various points in their histories, though not always in the ways that you might imagine and of course, some were worse than others... Stratheden seems to attract quite a number of visitors these days, many of whom do make it inside and are excited by what they think are children's wards (because some of the corridor panels nearby have been painted), the earlier architecture beneath false ceilings that actually from the early 1980s, dark 'cells' in the basement and of course ghosts, which are always good for a laugh! They usually start off at the foot of a grass bank, which I suspect is around where you were at 15:45; in wards that were once almost overfilled with beds containing elderly patients with little control of their bowels or bladders... Nasty indeed - but not quite what most of them have in mind, I suspect! In the very early 1980s, I had two stays of about 3 months each in the detached block at the top of those steps at 15:32 - that could at times, be more what they had in mind... It is also the most recently vacated of all these Victorian blocks as it continued in use as a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit until 2017, when it moved into what I think remains the operational hospital's newest buildings, at the other end of the site. They make it all the way through what were then wards 5 - 10 and occasionally 14, discovering that the power is actually still switched on round about 9; but as yet, none have actually dared try to enter the main hall - probably because of the presence of distant voices working within areas that in reality, are still at the far end of long, echoey corridors that nobody ever goes down. I suspect they're probably in the old main kitchen area, which might retain some functionality, as most of the new wards are in detatched buildings. There might even be a few admin staff too, during the working day!
I was a student nurse at Hartwood back in the late 90's.. Loved it.. My mum was a nurse there too back in the 70's.. The stories she told me from that time were terrifying.. Such a shame to see the state of it now..
Another interesting tour. It is amazing how much decay had taken place since your last visit. Not sure if I would like to have a home in the new developments.
I worked at Rosslynlee for many years. In the 80’s most of the hospital looked after elderly patients mostly with dementia although there were many who had been inpatients for decades and were needing more physical care. The stairway you entered went to ward one on one end the female wing and ward 10 or the male wing on the other. Back in earlier days all the patients would work on the farm or laundry if they were able but a change meant this could no longer take place. Nearby there was an old train line Rosslynlee had its own station and day patients would come and go from there some even attending for ECT as a day patient. In earlier times the staff also lived in the hospital and needed permission to leave on their day off get married and many other things. The hospital was split into male and female and the hospital was locked down the middle to prevent any unsupervised mixing. There were large ledgers kept in the nursing office giving reports on such things as nurses absconding and what field they were last seen in.
Rather amazing mixture of old and new. Fairly modern door handles and strike plates, a few compact florescent bulbs, drywall panels, smoke detectors, etc. Clearly updated over time until its closing. Then to see the 2019 footage...sad.
I was born in Bangour Maternity Hospital in 1980 before it was demolished when St John's in Livingston opened. Used to walk my dogs round the villas up until a few years ago when it was closed off for the house building.
I think I was one of the last residents in Hartwood nurses home. November 89- Feb 90. There were only 3 of us lived there and occasionally the other 2 would go home for the weekend. Lots of exploring through the old library's and even the snooker room. Was a great facility self enclosed with a bowling green on site. Money was not of great importance to patients as the main currency was Regal or B&H cigarettes Moved to Law hospital nurses home which has since been demolished
Amazing to see how the ballroom has deteriorated in a relatively small space of time, Its good to see the places even of you cant always get inside, to be up close to the buildings with the atmospheric mist is enough, well worth the trip 😎
My parents worked at Rosslynlee and as a result lived in staff cottages on site. I lived next to this place for about 20 years of my life. Very odd to see this video crop up. It’s a place that is burned into my memory, I probably know every part of that estate
It also had a general hospital just up the road from it. I had both my sons in the maternity unit there. There was a world renowned burns unit in the the hospital
Hah can't believe TH-cam recommended me this. Used to spend hours driving all over Scotland to these sorts of place with my mates when I first got my license about 10 years ago. Can't believe Rosslynlee is still basically the exact same now as it was then!
Just so you guys know Bangour is pronounced ban-gouwer, like hour. I was born in the now knocked down main hospital back in 84. Edited: Also fun wee story, my Dad and uncles used to get their magic mushrooms in the surrounding woods or at least so they say lol
Worked in Hartwood some great memories some not so great the locked wards housed some of the most dangerous patients outwith Carstairs. The train line running through Hartwood was maybe not a good idea as many patients flung themselves from the bridge onto oncoming trains scary place but also some great memories sad to see what it's become because it was a beautiful place with beautiful grounds. I remember when they were closing it a lot of the patients had been there decades and were crying they didn't want to leave I often wonder what became of them 😢
I worked with a guy after he spent years at Hartwood and he was all bent over from a crooked back from being strapped in to a bed for most of his time he was kept there. He told me his story and it's quite sad. When he was a child he took a fall off of his Tricycle and banging his head, he developed epileptic like seizures and back then when he was a child they didn't know exactly what was going on with him and this place was thought to be the best option to keep him, he wasn't treated very well at all.
Great video I really enjoyed watching I’ve spent loads of time walking round Bangour but now it’s being developed a shame really Incidentally it’s pronounced Bang our as in ow in the middle 😅 some of my friends used to work there before it closed

Its a shame you didnt get to explore the old ravenspark in Irvine. Bodies were found when a housing development recommenced after it went into admin. When clearing the derelict ground a mass grave was found. It was a former poor house.
I used to look after Roslynnlee hospital on call for when people broke in, boarded up the windows and doors many times. That place is horrifically haunted, seen and and heard stuff there that will stay with me for life.
Meh, I lived next to it for 23 years, even including some years after it was shut, both my parents worked there and I spent quite a lot of time inside the building. It never bothered me.

Hi there thanks for the comment. 1. We access the places we visit both with permission and without. Whilst we prefer permission, it is not always possible to obtain and before long the place is demolished without documentation. Therefore, we will wander into what we can if unchallenged. Trespass is not a crime in the UK so given that we are always as respectful and discreet as possible, we have never had any real trouble from it. 2. It is a mild concern and we do wear P3 filtered masks if there is an obvious risk. However it is difficult to avoid entirely. Not to say that either are completely fine, of course some degree of risk is unavoidable and we would never condone either. But we do all we can to minimise the chances of problems arising. I knew that was an asylum in Hartwood as I've been driving my bus by it every Sunday for the last year. At least now I know where all the nutters in the local area were from.
Man guys that place looks so gloomy and depressing inside I'm sure it didn't look like that when it was open but damn he messing being crazy and being in there I know it'd be hard because you'd have to be crazy anyway it's just a gloomy looking place amazing at what kind of shape it's in though, it's probably like 800 years old but then again they built things to last and them days not like the cracker boxes we have now???

Great locations lads. We would have loved to have investigated when our Paranormal team was active. Many souls are lost in these places and would welcome help.
I think the title of this site is both offensive and insensitive in the 21st century. I would have thought we were more enlightened in this day and age towards mental health labelling. Many ordinary people over the years have required treatment and support for a whole range of mental health issues and still do. How do you think those many former patients and their families who required treatment in the Psychiatric Hospitals you mention, subsequently recovered, and returned to their normal lives contributing to society, feel, as being labelled as having treatment in 'Lunatic Asylums' ? Do you really need to revert to degrading and insulting terminology from a long bygone age for your heading. The content of the site is historically interesting and relevant and would still remain so without the need for the offensive heading.

Having said that, it is unlikely to affect you especially if not directly working on it.
Not to say that either are completely fine, of course some degree of risk is unavoidable and we would never condone either. But we do all we can to minimise the chances of problems arising.

Shame they closed all these hospitals. They are all now walking the streets 🥴
