I know a dollar doesn't sound like much money to us, but I imagine that it was back then! What I wouldn't give to go back in time to see Elvis. lol Shame the school is abandon now, shame to let the building go like that not to mention the history it has with Elvis. Great video Trey, very cool indeed!

THIS IS FANTASTIC! So glad you persisted and found the stage. Love this story. You should send a link of this video to the school district for historical preservation. Mother Maybelle & The Carter sisters, Elvis Presley with Scotty Moore and Bill Black! (May just stop the district from demolishing another piece of Music History. This is my new favorite video.

I think the Greatest thing of all is Elvis always remembered where he came from. Just image how he felt a normal everyday person wanting to sing and unsure how people were going to react. Look I took drama for 4 years. I loved to act, but I had one big problem I was scared to death. My last name started with a W. I was always last. So you stayed behind the curtain and waited. Oh My God it was the worse. I remember my stomach hurting I thought I was going to throw up or pass out which ever came first. My hands were sweating. I was a mess then I would go out and do my thing. People loved it. I thought wow that's cool. Then after seeing all these actors and the hell they go through because they have no privacy. They can't go anywhere or do anything without people wanting their autograph or to touch them. Well that wasn't going to work for me. I like my privacy. I really admire Elvis he did it even if he was terrified and all the people grabbing at him. I could see why he didn't want to sleep. I'm sorry I can just imagine. So even if he had everything that money could buy and all the money in the world. It wouldn't be any good if you didn't have any freedom at all. Think about it.🤔

That is so sad. I just can't imagine. My heart goes out to him, but I really admire him because he did it. He is a very smart man. There were times I thought if I knew him I would hide him out and try to protect him. Give him some peace and quite. I have been reading alot of what people are saying I don't know. They are still madly in love with him. It is a crazy world. God bless 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤

Very nice digging to find the correct location were Elvis,Scotty,Bill, played Trey. Trying to picture in '55 in various parts of the country how well known Elvis was at this point. Get a kick out of who else was 'on the bill' just like here Carter Sisters, & Duke of Paducah. Those old promotional newspaper adverts are cool to see also. As an aside to your story,, were the article said 'it was like seeing something from another planet',, can barely remember when The Beatles were to appear on Ed Sullivan for first time,,have a sister 8 years older than me,,,and her and her cronies were glued to TV and was very much like going to see something from another planet appearing for the first time. Hard to imagine how that was unless lived it. Thanks again.

Treeeeey!!! You did it. I can't believe you did this story. There's a father and son duo that have an Elvis channel dedicated to visiting venues where Elvis had played, and I have been waiting to see if they ever do a story on Bastrop even though they mainly do 70's venues See, I went to 2nd through 4th grade at southside back in the mid 70's and haven't lived in Bastrop since 1978 when my step dad worked for international paper co. in Bastrop. I can't believe I get to revisit a bit of my childhood as well as where Elvis played as a very young man. A double winner for me.

@@janm62 I remember that stage from doing Christmas shows there. I was an Elvis fan when I was 6 or 7 and I knew he had played at the school when he was first starting out. I have been kind of keeping an eye out for someone to do a story about his performance there..... Bear with me, I also was filmed at the Louisiana state fair in Monroe in 1975 with my mom, my best friend and his mom. Rick Nelson was headlining the state fair and this camera crew was going around to people asking questions about Ricky Nelson playing there. They asked us questions and when they asked me who my favorite singer was, I was to say Ricky Nelson but I blew it when they asked me because I said Elvis Presley. I have found video of this Rick Nelson concert at the fair and of other people interviewed about him but not of us. I would love if it turned up.

@@GlobetrottingWithTrey Trey, I wish there was something but it was 20 years after still at that point when I was a grade schooler there. The thing I remember is how Elvis was on a different level where I grew up in the south back in the 70's. He was almost on a Prophet type level. I think everyone in the south viewed him as one of their own who came from the dirt and had nothing to become the biggest star in the world and Elvis took as many people with him as he could and had respect for his parents and elders. One thing, almost above all else is that Elvis stayed in Memphis and never left (I know he had homes in California), and the people respected Elvis for not forgetting where he came from. When he died just how upset everyone was. It wasn't like anything else I have ever seen. Princess Dianna reminded me a little because everyone (especially in England) was so upset. My mom mourned for like 3 days and is only 1 of 2 times I saw her cry over a famous person dying. Natalie Wood was the other. Elvis did like 330 shows in 1955, all over the south, mainly Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. That would be a great story, to try and run down whatever you could dig up about those shows. The Elvis concert data base has the dates and venues and other info about every concert he ever did and may be a possible starting point for figuring out if you could dig up some stories about that amazing time in his life where he was trying to make it by barnstorming the south.

@@janm62 oh sorry, Jan. I wish I had specific stories about it. We weren't well connected in Bastrop and only lived there about 4 years so I don't recall any stories about Elvis playing there. I don't remember when I first thought this, but I remember not understanding why a star like Elvis would have played there because by the time I went to school there no one would be playing the school cafeteria besides us kids. Everyone says 1956 was the magic year for Elvis, which it was commercially, but 1955 was the most interesting year to me in a lot of ways. He played all over the south, some 300+ shows, and was making a name for himself by himself almost. Many people make it seem like Colonel invented Elvis in a lab somewhere, but Elvis was knocking on the door to stardom when Colonel swooped in and signed him, all in thanks largely to all the hard work Elvis put in in 1955.
