    Thank you for this video. I had never seen a real narrow gauge railroad before. Great job on this. Thank Andrew for getting you the access you had so we could see some of the behind the scenes stuff up close.

    It's incredible!
    I grew up watching Thomas the Tank engine as a little kid in the 90's, and now growing up i have discovered that there is actually the railroad from where it all started! (in the books).
    I remember Sir Handel, Duncan, Rusty, Duke and all those other small gauge trains, lovely!
    I'll come to Wales to visit one day! i'll do a train trip to all these nice places!

    Nice job! In case you're unsure, here are the engine's names and builders and dates of completion
    1."Talyllyn" - Fletcher Jennings, 1864
    2. "Dogloch" Fletcher Jennings, 1866
    3. "Sir Hadyn" - Falcon works, 1921
    4. "Edward Thomas" - Kerr Stuart, 1918
    6. "Douglas" Barclay, 1918
    7. "Tom Rolt" built in the railway's own shops in 1991.
    There are also four diesels and some maintenance equipment.

    Great video Will. I was there that weekend it was so good. Do not forget that Reverend Awdry who wrote the Thomas books was instrumental in the preservation of this line in 1951. There is a replica of his office in the museum there.

    Great video. Glad to see that you got up on the footplate. I was on 70000 Britannia's footplate when I was cleaning her at Swanage and the fire felt like it was melting your face!!
    I would recommend the Swanage Railway. I know it's a long way from Crewe but it'd be worth it. We have the only in service M7 on this planet and she sees regular use. We have T9 No. 30120 with us until the end of the summer so come on down

      InterCity82 The only other one to do so are the modified Corris locos, that had a latch coupling that could (kinda, sorta) work with the chain link, although the only surviving Corris locos are both at the Talyllyn Railway anyways...

    150 years and counting. With the original two locos, the original four coaches, and the original brake van all still around and still going.
    The loco you got the tour of and had the controls explained in was Dolgoch, I think. It had circular windows, so it can't have been Douglas
    Dolgoch's current boiler, by the way, is built to the original design from the 19th century.
    And it's Skarloey. Skar-lo-ey.
    Did you get a look at the Awdry Study?

    As you narrated near the beginning about Edward Thomas it is worth noting that on Talyllyn. the engine Skarloe is based on from Thomas the Tank Engine. Originally it had no wheels under the cab and those had to be added.

    Steam Locomotives
    No.1 "Talyllyn" - Fletcher Jennings, 1864
    No.2 "Dolgoch" - Fletcher Jennings, 1866
    No.3 "Sir Haydn" - Hughes, 1878
    No.4 "Edward Thomas" - Kerr Stuart, 1921
    No.6 "Douglas" - Barclay, 1918
    No.7 "Tom Rolt" - Talyllyn Railway, 1991
    Other Locomotives
    Our four diesel locomotives, other self-propelled vehicles and other locos which have worked here in the past.
    Built on a gauge of 2 feet 3 inches, the Talyllyn Railway is one of a number of narrow-gauge lines in north and mid Wales built in the 19th century to carry slate, in the Talyllyn's case from the Bryn Eglwys quarries near Abergynolwyn. Opened in 1865, the line runs the seven and a quarter miles from Tywyn (on the Cardigan Bay coast) to Nant Gwernol, from where a series of horse-drawn tramways continued into the mountains. The slate traffic ceased in 1946 following a serious rock fall in the quarry.

      Panzer IV All of the engines on the Talyllyn railway are twins of the engines on the Skarloey railway.
      Skarloey = Talyllyn
      Rheneas = Dolgoch
      Sir Handel = Sir Haydn
      Peter Sam = Edward Thomas
      Rusty = Midlander

    I love listening to a steam engine's whistle, it's music to my ears. You would have done better to keep quiet, so I could enjoy the sounds of the engine and her whistle more. And why do this in two parts, when you could have easily shown it in one whole video? You should have the whole video in one go, not split it in half. It ruins the magic for me. Give me the second part quick-smart, or you'll never hear the end of it.

  • @CD-dc1oc

    I feel like a traitor because I like british trains when I am in the US.
    Dont get me wrong I love american locomotives but it is just something about british locomotives that I like. Well at least america has better looking diesels gaaah. No offense but your diesel locomotives look like boxes on wheels. I also dont get why britian had such small freight wagons. What is the point. In america we try to get the biggest wagons and made a tank car that carried 50000 gallons of liquids.
    And alas britian has rails connecting everywhere. The US doesnt have a railroad passenger system that is as good as britian mostly based in Freight.
    And almost no one appreciates trains. In the US trains are seen by most people as a distraction and annoyance. Where as they helped us grow into the nation we are today. Damn I need to move.
