Is it any good though? Looking like a mini PlayStation 5 is cool but for $63 - does it deliver anything at all?
Well...it can't do 4K. What a surprise!
I was able to do custom firmware for the Game Stick but for this...not too sure.

Who cares if it comes with a memory card full of ROMs, Nintendo are a bunch of dicks anyway, they deserve all the piracy they get, they're not selling the games anymore, therefore, I consider it fair game (pun intended)

If they were going to use a rock chip, why not 3326 or 3566? The only system that needs a PI is the SF2000 if I knew how.

@@starsINSPACE We sure did when we had no cash for game and watch. Those were expensive. Think I payed 80 for the original donkey kong double screen. That was real money back then. Ten years later a night at the bar would set you back maybe 50 including cab ride back.
The 4k logic of these things is: You can hook it up with a 4k display and it will output images no problem, but it is not necessary in 4k resolution.
Just like some times my friend points at the LCD display on a printer and asked: "Hey! Is this touchscreen?"
I'll answer: "Yes it is!" and just when she shows interest in the dang thing, I continued: "You can touch the screen all you like all day, but there's no guarantee that it will respond."
Game stick light is not bad can play up to ps1 for 20 bucks

Good thing that the controller starts to look like a real Dualsense; many PS5 clones out there still have that PS1 controller design.
Noticed when you turned it on, it reported the refresh rate as 50hz. This is probably the frameskip you’ve been seeing, since most of the games ran at 60

I would guess "UBOOT" refers to U-Boot, the reference manual for which describes it as "an open-source, cross-platform boot loader that provides out-of-box support for hundreds
of embedded boards and many CPUs, including PowerPC, ARM, XScale, MIPS, Coldfire, NIOS, Microblaze, and x86." Presumably they used U-Boot to load the system's kernel image. If this is correct, figuring out how to access the boot loader is probably among the first steps to loading custom firmware.
I have explored the stock image for the game stick lite and pretty much understand the details of how it works. It also helps I'm familiar with Rockchip BSP systems.
It should be possible to port the custom retroarch system between the devices, as they both use an RK3032. The technical details for why you can't directly do it don't exactly matter. Though it is possible that given there is only one partition on the SD card, you would have to do a "fishing expedition" and recover the system partitions from the internal storage, and then scarily erase them from the internal storage to make it work from SD card.
TH-cam likes to eat my detailed comments up, so if you have another place I can (publicly) detail some of the thoughts, please share.
About the Powkiddy V90, it is reported (I haven't verified) that it requires a "dumb" old school 5V 1A/2A charger without any smarts to charge.
Given some of the hardware problems, and how the USB port is not exactly connected correctly to the SoC, I totally believe that. (USB data connection to a computer only works when there is no SD card connected due to a small oopsie in their design.)
So it could be that the battery ran down entirely. If you have other Nokia-style batteries, or an external charger for these, you can also confirm that way that it's only that it's been ran down entirely.

I would *love love love* to see a repair attempt done on the Powkiddy in your style! There's something extremely satisfying about watching the progression of skills on this platform, and honestly I don't think there'd be anyone better qualified. Especially when you're so thorough with your reviews, and talk through your thought processes while dojng so.

Normally for these things when it says 4k, it means nothing other than you can plug it into a 4k tv and it will work. It's not referring to being able to output 4k, at least not normally maybe some of them out there can.
Oh yeah it's just a marketing thing but meaning yes you can plug thiw into a 4K TV and it will work. But it would be nice if they did do something with 4K but probably not any time soon!
4:49 "fuzzy caton" is a bad translation for "模糊卡顿", which actually means "blurry (&) laggy". 卡顿 (pronounced as kǎdùn) is translated based on sound as if it's a name for whatever reason

I dont know if you read comments, but a very neat product is the LG T80, released in 2008 and had a whopping tv player build in, and it actually worked. had a big antenna and could pick up dvb signal.
Its an unique mp4 device and Ive never seen a TH-camr talk about it.
Its pretty crazy as well as most mp4 players back then were barely touchscreen. But this beast managed to do TV 😮

Im thinking that uboot/usb switch enables a serial terminal via those JTAG pads or maybe allows flashing factory images via the usb ports using some sort of inhouse software.
It will be very interesting to see this with custom firmware. That speaker really looks good too.

given that has JTAG holes, you could try hooking up a serial to ttl or uart adapter, and you may be able to get somewhere

Should have went for an RG35XX handheld for the same price. I got mine from temu and it's amazing. Can play up to PS1 games and it looks like a modern gameboy. I also have the RG353V Which can play up to psp, N64, NDS, and even Dreamcast
your vids made me buy a game stick lol. can't wait to see how I can mod it with custom firmware, heatsinks, 3d design and print a custom case for it and see if I can put a fan or 2 in there and push it to its limits. It was only 22 euro anyway lol.

on linux systems you can do Ctrl+Alt+(F1 - F7) to get access to different command prompts (virtual teletypes)
Could you try to use some type of partition manager, or lost partition finder. it could be hidden, i found some stuff that way before.

what happens when you plug a bootable linux flash or sd card in? fyi try ctrl + alt + F1 to 4 to see if it switches virtual screens for terminal

14:55 did you try the ctrl+alt+f1-12 combo? It usually switches around linux sessions
I did and unfortunately nothing happened. I ended up just mashing key combos hoping something would work but no go.

in case you didn't know, the "videogame crash" was a local US "crash" whereas everywhere else the videogames industry were doing just fine pretty much all going business as usual
I think the US crash has gotten so way too overstated that even people elsewhere doesn't tend to realise that it wasn't really a videogames crash at all and certainly not widespread
also I'm pretty sure E.T. didn't actually singlehandedly cause and wasn't solely responsible at all; the problem of mass unlicensed and mostly low quality garbage was already flooding the market long before that it was already on track and inevitable; it was more of just a perfect storm and that E.T. happen to be a big brand and seemed so bad so it was the one name that stuck, scapegoated even in a sense, and so got hit the hardest in both ways, by both sides, financially and publicly

That sucks I'm late if you've not figured it out yet, but that PK handheld cannot be charged with a fast charger at all, I'm not sure what voltage you were getting from it but it states in the manual and there are many posts online that it will refuse fast chargers. Your handheld probably isn't dead. Try a cheap slow android charging brick.
it runs a little better than the stick lite but as you have said it's not worthy for 3d emulation, even my psp has some difficulties with n64 games. so get a decent smartphone/pc and you have done basically. it's just cute for the mini looking ps5 thing tho.

What always amuses me about these knockoff consoles is that they all have the exact same dodgy NES romset that's been in all the plug-and-play trash from the last 15 or so years. It's like a trademark at this point.

Well, I did have one that was on sale, so I guess I score a bargain (get it pretty cheap like USD29 on my local online shopping web)? But yeah, the performance is similar to what you show, mine maybe old version as the GUI is a bit different. For a cheap game console for kids that can easily break your property often, yeah, this is not bad as I don't really have to pound my chest that hard when they pour water into it.

He says about the cost at $60(Au), and it's price difference over the Gamestick lite, im considering buying it just for the shell to house my RetroPi Raspberry Pi. And as I was typing this he mentioned it would be a good case for exactly that.

I dunno being a vintage game collector I never had an issue with the E.T. game. It was a bit more advanced than many other Atari games where you had to do a series of things to beat the game. It deserves a redesign and release on cartridge for Atari. I am sure Speilburg and friends would want a cut though.
I think if you switch it to uboot it may boot from a usb stick with firmware on it

I actually did a follow up video to it showing how to install custom firmware but a lot of people had troubles with it so I ended up unlisting the video. People were formatting the original SD card and the game stick has several revisions - at least 10 different ones exist so it was just a bit of a headache.

Extra technical stuff Part 2 (part 1 is in the video made before that one)
TL;DR: You can totally make custom ROMs for this thing with a PC and a bit of technical Linux knowledge using this switch
Alright so on ALLWINNER devices when the U-Boot key/switch/contact pins/whatever is pressed/switched/connected to ground/etc on startup it jumps to FEL mode
To keep it short FEL mode is a mode on Allwinner chips that gives you low level access to the system and if you have the tools on a Linux PC (I don't know about Windows) (also the tools are public and open source) you can do stuff like load a custom version of U-Boot (hence the name and U-Boot is an open source bootloader something like a BIOS that loads and boots Linux) boot custom files and read/write the SPI firmware chip(s) on the board. (I know this because I have an AnyCaster with an A10 and I managed to put a backdoor in the firmware) And looking at the board of the unit it uses (You guessed it :D) an SPI firmware chip. However this is a Rockchip powered unit so it probably has different tools and stuff but it should be pretty similar (at least I hope so :P) however SPI firmware chips are small so the code needs to be efficient or use something like an SD card or USB Flash drive.

Wow, that Doom emulation is painful. Can hear the audio stretching when it can't keep up.
look up a game called Keitai Denjuu Telefang, if you can get it in english even better because that are the "Base game" that the bootleg diamond and jade use.
The U-Boot switch might be for getting into the bootloader and could help with getting custom firmware loaded. U-Boot is a bootloader for embeddded device like these. Many network routers and Allwinner tablets use it for example.
Try Ctrl+F1 or Ctrl+Alt+F1 and see if it drops you to a Linux shell.

It's the actual problem with that rom on mario 64 I had same issue with same rom on pc. Just find another version should work great
