This guy went from playing drums (very well ) to playing bass to this unbelievable level in about a year from leaving the Isle of Wight, madness I tell you.
Phil Gould makes playing drums look like relaxation on the beach. Fabulous drummer. Never played traditional cross hand style either. Even harder not to do....
Phil's pocket playing is outstanding - It completely makes this performance. Claaaassssy! The emphais on the the 2 and 4 with the hats keeps everything groovy baby!
I love all the songs from the old Level 42, but in this one I see a fair balance between the guitar and the bass, that is, the melodic part and the rythm one, perfect..
Thanks for the video; it made my day to see Boon. May he rest in peace. I first heard L42 in 1985 and liked Boon's guitar work on Something About You. I also like his guitar work on Good Man In A Storm and Children Say. Last week I found a live version of GMIAS with Nathan on guitar. For the longest time I thought the guitar work at one point in GMIAS was done by Mike on keyboards. Boon's work in this song is great too. L42 has so many underrated musicians, whether Boon or Jakko on guitar or Phil or Gary on drums, Annie on vocals, John on trumpet, to name a few.
To All the Level 42 Fan's & Fan's of so many amazing acts that played this German TV Show was " a who's who " of all the best acts that played on " Rockpalast " which when I think of the amount of acts whether solo or bands played on this show it pisses me off that the UK didn't have an equivalent & though there was : The Tube " but the presenters at that time weren't the smartest kids on the block & were more interested in flirting with specific people in a band but like The Beatles this German TV Show was ahead of everyone else & they literally owned the music scene at that point & an analogy would be IF you wanted to see The Beatles Live then you went to The Tavern & this German TV Show was a modern day equivalent of The Tavern but the difference was they gave , as I said earlier , the who's who , of solo acts the chance to play full set er lists & if any Level 42 Fan's don't know or haven't got round to buying it then I'll say that this particular song was played by of , course , Level 42 but quite a while back these live gigs started to show up on DVD with wide-screen along with update audio enhancements to make them sound better through a great cinema surround sound system that you bought to create you own in door movie theatre & it made concerts sound amazing too as the sound would travel from speaker to speaker at certain times... You can buy this gig along with another recorded at the Rockpalast at a very afford price on DVD & it has 2 Live Shows on 1 DVD that were recorded about 8 months to a year between each 1 , as I haven't played it for a while... Just go on Amazon/Ebay or any online shopping site & type in Level 42 Live At The Rockpalast & you'll know you've got the right one as the photo on the front was probably taken there at the same time & the SCD DVD holders cover has a blue cover at certain points but it is late & I might be wrong with the colour that's added at certain point of the DVDs front cover page , either way , if type in what I've typed or even the same description but worded differently than I have typed it in it will still show up 2 For 1 Live Gigs... Which reminds me I need to look at the other acts on that show as if Level 42 were on it then maybe they released the other acts on DVDs & I've just now looked for them yet!.. A Merry Christmas & Seaons Greetings on 2022 All The Best .....
Does anyone know why Level 42 are seemingly refusing to upload the official music videos for this song and also Micro Kid to their TH-cam channel? And when anyone else tries to upload them, they have them deleted. Very strange...
I'll push some controversy on this. Level 42 were a tight unit but I think Mark had bigger ideas and the Gould brothers weren't into it. Therefor they lost two fabulous musicians. Even the World Machine album, the feel changed. It was was more pop oriented. Have you listened to the snare on Something about you?
This solo by the late Boon shows just how guitar should be played. May he rest in peace

The man is a natural musical genius
Ladies & Gentlemen, now I´m telling you this: This is my favourite song of all times! Fact.
No joke. This is one if the greatest songs i’ve heard in my 45 years of exsistence
No joke at all

Boon Gould ... Brilliant...R.i.P.
Phil Gould makes playing drums look like relaxation on the beach. Fabulous drummer. Never played traditional cross hand style either. Even harder not to do....
He plays both and on this performance too ; )
Phil Gould…..pocket for days!!!👊🏽👏
Phil Gould, what an amazing drummer! Majorly relaxed and on the money. :)
Love this performance ❤️ RIP Boon
Boon Gould, unvergessen. Brillanter Musiker
All the elements that made Level 42 so great are on display in this live lip. Great track and one for the time vault!
...umm except Wally
Wow…In 2024 we are still here!…Cause 'WE' still care…

The band at their peak that year.

love this live performance..mark is tearing that bass up..good vocals
best band ever!
Simple bass line for Mark, but one that is so infectious and surprisingly difficult to master for us mere mortals Lol.
