Nothing compares to the Gould Brothers when it comes to Level 42, even not the great musicians of todays lineup. The two brothers had an unbelievable timing and Phil played the drums so musical like no other drummer did afterwards in this Band.

Level 42 died when the brothers left, but they bleft because they felt the band was selling out and had lost their identity, very honourable Phil, got to respect that

this is probably my all time favourite clip of Level 42. It just demonstrates their sheer brilliance. There are a lot of popular bands right now who will never be as skilled as these guys. What's more, they don't even look like their trying!!

In an almost reverse evolution the band that went on to pay its mortgages with pop music started of as a really gifted Brit-jazz-Funk outfit. Here they are brewing up a righteously funky noise live. Mark is showing us his guns while blazing out a furious groove, Boon is showing us you can use that most rock of guitars in funk, the Gibson Les Paul. Phil is enjoying himself, and mike has just gotten over he " I wanna be in Earth Wind and Fire" get up from the year before... Classic stuff!

I was never a fan of Level 42, because of the commercial stuff they did, but I still love the real down & dirty stuff that they did so well. My son's 15 and playing bass and he really respects MK, along with Bootsy, Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Percy Jones, etc.
In these days of somewhat insipid music, it's great to hear that wonderful funky sound.

Great groove ;example of early level 42s Rawness, more towards a fusion type of thing, rather than a ,for lack of a better description a more "pop" type of composing style .I think it is all part of their evolution as a band and composers/song writers.Mark was always amazing ,his solos still contain elements from these days.

I should be tired of saying this but when I see earlier footage like this & up to late 80s I can't help it when I've got to say with the upmost respect for the man:
" Stop Using Status Bass Guitars & Go Back To The JD Supernatural Series " of bass guitar's...
The Status just doesn't have it in the mids & sounds too tinny, were as the JD Supernatural Series could give you those high mids/trebles & plenty of bass on top of them...
It's when things like this that show up in my TH-cam feed from nearly 40 years ago that reminds how much better Mark sounded of those JD Supernatural Bass Guitar's...
Still one of the best bands going around & I'm booked up to see them kick off their 40th Anniversary Tour in October 2020...
    RIP Boon Gould
    RIP Alan Murphy

      @@trygd100
I dont know why this just showed up now but yeah i know Marks on what he should stick to & thats his JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar but on saying that ivd learned more since i first posted up my first comment about switching back to the JD Bass Guitar...
For so many year's i blamed the range of Status Bass Guitars for Mark's thin & barely any bass sound But i had the opportunity back in 2020 to buy a 2015 in mint condition Status Series II & like the earlier & older version used for decades Rob decided to give them a new updated look & sound & i decided to buy it to trully find out if it was the Status Bass Guitars or Mark's fault!..
Once the 2015 Status Series II arrived it was in mint condition but i had something to find out first before i played my own bass lines on it...
I plugged it into my Trace Elliot GP11 MKV Bass Amp which had the amp buolt into the cabinet rather that the amp being separate & then you need speakers to plug it into & with four 12 inches speakers beating at 150 watts with the addition of adding more cabinets to see it go up another 10 plus watts & if your a bassist & a Fan of Level 42 you judt know how to automatically set your bass guitar up for running on the bridge pick up & i add so extra bass from the Status Series II & i couldnt be more surprised at the sound i got!..
It has the same built graphic equaliser as the separate amp & the more i messed about with my settings on my Trace Elliot GP11 MKV Bass Amp & my Status Series II Bass Guitar the better the sound got & talk about egg on my face , as i'd only very quickly tried out one Status model in my local store & even for that quick sound check it sounded fine & since i wasnt buying i quickly put it back on the bass holder on the wall as these bass guitar still a lot more money 2nd hand...
1 week after i bought the Status Series II Bass Guitar arrived i had a chance at buying a Status KingBass Artist Bass Guitar , was the specific bass both Rob Green & Mark had worked on with regards to its design , as i too like to hit harmonics & bend the note at a specific point but on wuite a few big brand named bass guitars leave absolutely no room to press that string down & this had bothered Mark for decades as he too likes to play harmonics on a string & at times it can be difficult with whatever bass guitar he used & with the KingBass Artist Model we saw for the first time the Bend Well or Thru Bend which has a specific size out of the front part of the neck , but it can still maintain 100% strength & if anything it do hold more & this saw Mark or anyone buying one , the could do some serious string bending as there was plenty of that neck reduced so that it was like a U shape & the length from the fret to the bend well was long enough as it was deep enough & this is what Mark had wanted for years & i could go over all the extras Rib added to that particular bass guitar but i'll leave it at that , as this comment was about sound...
I honestly couldnt find a rubbish sound from my Status Series II & what i went on to buy my Status KingBass Artist , as since i knew from the Series II there was nothing wrong with the siund i was getting & i bought the Status KingBass Artist Bass Guitar , believe im not minted but i did save uo fir a few years incase an opportunity like this happened & just as well i did or i would've lost out on the Status KingBass Artist...
I tried so msny different pickup variations with bass or treble at different series & i couldnt get the thin sound Mark got on his Status Bass Guitar... Let me clear something up , as i still prefer the JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar for its specific sounds & though i proved the Status Bass Guitars can sound brilliant, ill always go for the JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar over my 2 Status Bass Guitars & by that i mean with both bass guitars being even as far as the sound the JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar is a better sound for Marks Bass Lines but the Status Range are just as good when you dial in the sound your looking for...
This left me with the only other issue it could be & that is the Amps Msrk is using on stage & how his sound is mixed through the PA & sure enough he has used TC Electronic Amps for years & since i played in 2 bands trying to break into the Music Industry i know all about what the band hear on stage to what the fans while hear from the speakers in front of the band that mix the sound from the bands individual amps & then playing them through PA but on saying that the sound the band hears on stage isnt that much difference now with the advancements of modetn tech gear...
A bassist can be put through their amp/PA & then have a tech gadget that allow him to hesr esch member via the the small headphones he can put on & this can see him mix his sound in with all the bands instruments & backing singers at a setting thsts sees all of those settings are all equal & when i first saw it , it reminded me of small miniature PA thatvhe can set evety member to be hesrd exactly as he wants it rather that feeling like your fighting for sound from the drummer/lead guitarists & any part he wants to set them to so to him they are all level & the drums don't come across too loud...
Since he doesnt stay in my country we keep in contact via TH-cam & im going to ask him to put in his TH-cam Channel & specific bass guitar site to do a review of & how thst system works & as an example the drummer could have his soynd & everyone else on the same gadget & he too can alter the level of soynd he hears from specific instruments & even for a brief moment that he showed this up on TH-cam as they werent due to play for a couple of hours he was kind enough to record what he was doing while he explained what each thing he had , what it did & hoe it can make your life better when setting up for the PA & a Soundcheck...
Id love to have what he uses now back in the 90s as you get the best of both worlds , in fact you get the best period , & though everything is mixed perfectly on the PA the band still have to find a sound theyre happy to play on stage & this is were that gadget that looked like a mini PA can be used on the stage so no one is struggling to hear themselves live & on the stage & he had a few other modern tech gear that heloed him out & any band member that wanted to adjust the sound of tge drums or horn section & basically what im saying is as long as the PA has been mix to the point all members agree that each member can be heard & sound great but up on stage your not hearing thst as the speakers going inti the PA are in front of the band & set on the left & right sides to aim for perfect audio output but once on stage each members volume can be too much to listen to & it stops each member from playing at the same level or you want the horns to go up in volume or down , so basically your creating your own specific sound were as in the 90s we just put our amps on & tried to reach a volume that saw each member sounding as if they had the same volume as another instrument...
Sorry i went on a tangent there but on ending on a comment about Marks sound i know now & have done for a few years now that its Marks setting on his amp & what hes requested his bass guitar to sound like through the PA & why he's stuck to that thin with barely any bass sound only Mark knows & though you can hear those same amps hes used for many years it does see the JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar sound so much better but i think he should go back to using Trace Elliot Amps again & as my Dutch friend put it the JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar & Trace Elliot were meant to be & that amp brings out the best on the bass guitar & vice versa , as ive listened to him play his JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar in his Trace Elliot & the sound he gets out of his JD is amazing....
I cant remember where Trace Elliot are based as the original English based company was bought over & it either went to be based in America or the many countries in Europe & therefore he can go back to the Trace Elliot Bass Amps but im not sure if this new Trace Elliot range of amp head can deliver the sound Mark got while playing his JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar & that they are not just a 1 trick pony ,& like the older UK made Trace Elliot Amps could deliver aling with various other sounds is anyone's guess but im sure Mark King could go to the European Country where these Amos are built & he could get his on private try out to see how they sound but to be honest i dont think Mark cares anymore & is he going to keep using the JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar or that was him pay homage to his old sound on those hit singles & then decides to back to his sound on the Status Bass Guitars...
On an ending comment i knew Mark would do something different for tgeir 40th Anniversay Tour which became their 41 or 42 year Anniversary Tour , as i cant remember when they could go back out on tour again because of this ongoing coronavirus & this messed up them celebrating their 40th Anniversay since sell 1 one of their earlier songs that set in motion them becoming more successful but i didnt think he'd do what everyone was thinking & hoping & that was playing on his JD Supernatural Series I Bass Guitar again & only time will tell if this is just for a few years & then he goes back to using the Status Bass Guitars again...
      ....
