Why is the top end, ring area, of the pistons not coated?

We can coat the ring land area of the piston, most recently done at the request of an NHRA Pro Stock team. Another application is in "stroker motor" engine platforms. The coating does add more stability to the piston above what the skirt coating alone provides.
Coating the top end adds cost as the lands are coated separately from the skirts and require special masking to keep the coating out of the ring grooves. Please contact us directly if you are interested in having this service performed.

How does the cylinder bore coating or lack of coating affect the product selection? Say a nikasil coated aluminum bore vs a ductile iron uncoated sleeve.

Cylinder bore material has no bearing on the coating selection. Almost all engines with the exception of Top Fuel receive our "Slick+ CC" piston skirt coating. Other factors outlined in the video come into play when it comes to determining the Target Coating Thickness (TCT).
