I’m a Protestant but, I’ve always admired Catholicism I’ve heard mass a few times the one thing I still think is cool is you can go to church everyday, most Protestant denominations unless it’s a potluck or a special baptism, we only get to go on Sunday so Godspeed y’all and keep the faith.

Mike, this passage interests me a lot as I used to take it literally meaning that I thought that I shouldn't talk too long in prayer and that scared me because I have trouble forming clear sentences without uttering and pausing, this helps clears a lot of misunderstanding I had before, turns out those warnings had context to the people who prayed to pagan gods. Now when I pray to God I will imagine as if I am talking to a friend in a nice cozy place, where we get to pour heart to heart. God bless you all brothers and sisters

I am a Protestant attending Catholic mass twice a week out of respect for my wife. I'm enjoying it quite a bit for all sorts of good reasons. However, I do find it difficult during the various prayers to understand what is being said as the priest is typically reciting prayers very quickly and with very little variation in tone and with very little if any emphasis on any word or phrase. At first I thought it might just be this particular priest that I was listening to, but in the last couple of years I think I've heard seven or eight different priests giving masses and I believe every single one of them spoke in this very fast unemphasised manner. It is also the case with the prayers that the congregation says together or in response. The pace is always hurried I join in on the Lord's prayer but it's difficult to keep up with everyone else. The creed is also spoken very quickly and various other prayers that I know are standard and named but I don't know the names of. Sometimes some priests seem to sort of sing part of a prayer and I like that as the singing seems to require better enunciation. I know the Lord hears us all, but, in that these prayers are said out loud and often as a congregation, I think there would be value if these were said in a way that it was easier for the ear and mind to discern the meaning.

Repetitive prayer, like the Rosary, can offer great spiritual benefits by fostering a deep sense of meditation and focus. As Father Mike explains, it allows us to reflect on the mysteries of Christ's life and build a rhythm that can anchor us in faith, especially during moments of distraction or anxiety. The repetition helps us internalize key spiritual truths and invites us into a state of contemplative prayer, where we can connect more deeply with God. But balancing repetition with intentionality is essential for making repetitive prayer spiritually enriching rather than empty. Thank you, Father.

Babbling like the pagans means for example meditating on meaningless sylables being repeated over and over again while believing that is your prayer to an idol or to the gods plural. We Christians including from the Roman Catholic worship rite believe that the only way to our father in heaven is through Jesus Christ. Praising the human mother of Jesus Christ who gave birth while still a virgin requires being humble enough to acknowledge in prayer that Jesus Christ is god made flesh through her.

@@crorioga God the Father is beyond human comprehension. I don’t think we can necessarily compare Him to human limitations. It’s my belief that he wants us to become spiritually closer to him, which to me means praying to Him directly. And I’m not just talking about reciting the Our Father. I’m talking about having a dialogue with Him and to be guided by the Holy Spirit. He may not have a conversation with us, like you and I have conversations, but I do believe He indirectly responds to our prayers… in His time and when it’s His will. It’s up to us to recognize His response and to either accept it or ignore it. Anyway, I think I’m getting off topic, lol… my point is, don’t underestimate your goal of becoming closer to God. The Bible DOES say “Don’t recite the same prater over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answer only by repeating them again and again” Mt 6:7-8. However, I think this refers to the repetition of empty words as opposed to repetition of a Hail Mary during the recitation of the Rosary, meant to help you meditate on the mystery you are praying. Also, by entering in this meditative state we allow the Holy Spirit to enter and move within us, producing the fruits of the HS, as opposed to just repeating thoughtless words. IMHO. Gob Bless

Jesus did not condemn repeating prayers or using prayer beads like the rosary. He was condemning "babbling like the pagans" - the practice of the pagan religions to try to get the attention of their many gods through lengthy, repetitive prayers.
Jesus himself repeated prayers, such as in the Garden of Gethsemane, and as a Jew would have frequently prayed the Psalms, which involve repetition.
The pagan religions believed their gods were capricious and uncaring, so they had to try to appease them through elaborate rituals and incantations.
In contrast, Jesus teaches that we can approach God the Father directly, knowing that He loves us and wants our attention, not the other way around.
When Catholics pray the rosary, the goal is not to convince an indifferent God, but to meditate on the life of Jesus with the help of His mother Mary.
The rosary and other repeated prayers allow us to approach God as a loving Father, not as pagans trying to get the attention of uncaring deities.

As someone who's been looking into Catholicism, and has prayed the rosary many times, this one still gets me. The phrase "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do" is from the KJV. While I wouldn't suggest the KJV is more reliable than modern translations, in this case it seems to be a closer translation than the NAB as the Greek literally translates to "When you pray, use not useless repetition as the ones of (the) nations [i.e., heathens/pagans]: for they think that they shall be heard for the much saying of them." The phrasing "babbling like the pagans" seems to confuse the issue when that verse really is talking about repetition and not what we would think of today as babbling.

A lot of protestants say, "Just pray through Jesus". Y'all should know that Catholics do pray to God through Jesus. We also meditate on his life, through the rosary. It's not like we just sit around and say Hail Mary's and pray for intercession from saints all day. We also read the Bible, and every Mass is Christ centered with more read from the Bible than any protestant church I've gone to. We are encouraged to read the Bible and pray.
Also the ones that believe "faith alone", even the demons know that Christ is Lord. You still have to live out the Christian life. It's not a one and done sinners prayer. Believing is obviously important, but it's not all that you need for salvation.

Couldn't this ("babbling," "repeating") also refer to just saying "the words" from memorization without thinking about them or feeling them? Sometimes, when I pray, I must consciously slow myself down to consider what I'm saying or thinking. I remind myself that I need to understand and mean it with intention (as best as I am capable). It's not just to do it, to get through it, as if a chore or checking off a box.

Ignore those people, they do the work of the one who hates and fears Our Lady. Saint Pio of Pietrelcina says the Rosary is his weapon. Against whom you ask? The evil one.
All you need to know…. In particular I have learned to say the ‘Hail Mary’ in French. Whenever I have a tough task,
I start saying ‘Je vous salue Marie …’ and before you know it.. the task is done. Not mindless as I have to concentrate on translating from French to English in my mind in order for it to be truly meditational, if that makes sense. Our Blessed Mother intercedes on our
behalf to her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Saying prayers like these including Our Father back to back, can keep the evil one from intruding in our thoughts imo.

On each Hail Mary and Our Father recitation, there is a deep conversation with God and with our Blessed Mother.
For instance, in the second Joyful Mystery, the Visitation of our Blessed Mother to her cousin Elizabeth.
We ask our Lady to visit us along with Her Son, our home, places, countries, churches, and any areas in our spiritual lives we need to most help with.
I mean, the list is endless.
We also meditate and contemplate the
    Mysteries of our Lord.
Another example: we asked our Lord the Blood Which flew from His head Crowned with thorns to flow on aborted babies' Souls, in purgatory, in our wounds, etc.
The secret: stay still and stay focused.
I'm very confused about how it could be a repetition to anyone.
It's just unlimited how the Holy Spirit can inspire us.
Like many other prayers, the Holy Spirit is the One who inspired you on what to say during the recitation of the Holy Rosary.
Which is the importance of staying still, and calm and focusing our imagination and whole being on God, Blessed Mother, Saints, and the Heavenly Hosts.
It's a such Powerful Weapon because of how we pray for long periods of time although repeating the same prayer.
There are so many fruits from the recitation of the Holy Rosary.
Be still and have your mind & heart ❤ on God while praying it like any other prayers.
The Recitation of the Holy Rosary is everything to me.
If I accidentally leave it at home, I won’t be at ease until I go back to get it.
The Holy Rosary is my Heart❤️and never without it.
Always with me and it's my little companion 🌟.
Our minds and imaginations could wander if only we stay still and let the Holy Spirit🕊🕊🕊 lead us through the entire Holy Rosary or prayers.
I hope people learn how to say the Holy Rosary the right way and start to see the benefit of it! 🙏

While any form of prayer is a response to God's invitation.
When you pray, you are inviting God into your souls and you become one with Him.
You open your heart ❤️ to Him about things that worried you, your concerns and joys etc.
In fact, you are giving your concern to God to work on your soul and on our Hearts ❤️ even if you don't see the benefits immediately.
We won't become spiritually mature in one day but it is a daily disposition and response to God's invitation.
It is a matter of the quality of the amount of time we spend with God whether is during the Holy Bible Reading, Holy Rosary, or sporadic gaze on Him during our busy day (work, car, crowd, bus etc), Angelus prayers etc.

Praying for you Father Mike and everyone here in my Rosary! Happy Feast Day of Saint Gerard Majella (patron saint of pregnant women, childbirth, children, mothers, falsely accused people, good confessions, lay brothers, and unborn children). I prayed to Jesus for help with healing for those who lost the priceless precious gift of life, and I prayed for Jesus' help with protecting and defending the dignity of life from the moment of conception onward through the intercession of Saint Gerard Mejalla.
Bible verses bringing to mind the dignity of life-
Isaiah 49:15-16 Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you. See, upon the palms of my hands I have engraved you; your walls are ever before me.
Psalm 34:19 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, saves those whose spirit is crushed.
1 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel: Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. God does not see as a mortal, who sees the appearance. The Lord looks into the heart.
When Mother Mary was pregnant with Jesus, she went on an about eighty mile joyous journey to visit her cousin Saint Elizabeth (patron saint of expectant mothers and pregnant women) in her hour of need, Elizabeth said referencing her tiny child in her womb John the Baptist who was conceived when she was in old age:
Luke 1:41-45 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”
Hope you have a light-filled peaceful joyful blessed day!
