This is Arthur. When I got a message from a friend today that this video had posted, I was so excited I could barely concentrate on my work. I waited until I got home to watch it on the TV, gathered the kids around and told them that Dad just reached "peak life moment" (except for their births) being on NorCal Cycling. Thanks Jeff and Brian!
I'm not someone who races, just a bike enthusiast, but these videos make me want to join a local club. Very interesting and accessible analysis from your videos.
Hi Jeff. Just wanna say a huge thank you! As a MTB'er, I did my first road race (on the MTB) over the weekend. Maybe you've heard of it, it's called the Cape Town Cycle Tour (previously, Cape Argus), arguably the biggest road race in the world. 109km of beautiful scenery.. Anyhow, I've been watching your videos and I manage to complete it in a time of 3h36min which I wouldn't have without your advice it would probably have been a 4h+ ride. Started at the very back and only 1 guy came past me. Managed to settle in with a group of roadies and we rotated beautifully until the end where there are 2 big climbs and I dropped all off them with my MTB gears. I've been looking at entry level roadbikes now and super keen to give our local crits a go. Unfortunately we don't have categories so the winners are usually the pro's on their practice rides, but maybe I can get a sneaky win and send you the footage. Keep up with the great videos!
Great analysis! Thanks! The Little 500 is coming and since you are laid up, it would be awesome, if you have time, to get some analysis. I am sure the college kids in the race would love it!
3k to go as they turn into the head wind you can see a split that he missed by hanging out at the back. So many missed opportunities to move up got free by keeping soft pedalling rather than coasting with everyone else
Loved the analysis, Jeff! I just raced this course on Tuesday and managed to win the 4/5 race! Definitely taking some tips from y'all in this video. Arthur, hope I see you out there at an upcoming Tuesday night crit!
When you talked about why they were on the left side right side ect, it is because of the dips and turns. The first dip after the start its the worst on the right side so everyone goes on the left side. It is very common to get air lol. On the last little snake turns they were taking the turns the way everybody does because of the water ect. This is a fun course. I raced against Logan last year. I am nothing to talk about lol
Love to see the local crit course on the channel, hopefully this season I can convince the local Bike Mart crit team, Matrix Elite, to send you some videos. They've got a huge season coming up! Mainly looking out for my boy Lucas who came ahead of Logan in CTC last season for the last second win :)
I know Arthur, he is a great cyclist, an excellent, smart Crit racer, and a super nice gu,y who is always very helpful to everyone in the North Texas cycling community. Super excited to see Jeff and Brian analyze his video!
Jeff, I'm fairly new to road biking and wanted to ask you about your camera set up - front and back. Where are these mounted and how does your battery last throughout the whole race?
10:45 The guy in the green kit needs a proper bike fit ! Look at his Pedal stroke on the down stroke, his legs are fully extended & he will experience knee problems sooner than not if not corrected.
Is it better to be boxed in but in the shelter, or better to not be boxed in but take the crosswind? Probably situation dependent but a finer breakdown of when to use what strategy would be cool!
Probably.. but another way of looking at it is he also could have won with a very mediocre Sprint because of how well he timed it and positioned himself that whole last lap. I'll bet he could have made like 300 fewer watts and still won.
What's the story behind the drainage ditches? Putting that kind of money into constructing a track, one would think they would have installed culverts.
It’s not a cycling dedicated track. Just a car path around some soccer fields. Those ditches get sketchy at speed. Broke some handlebars there last summer lol. The one right after the finish line is really bad when it gets hot and the concrete expands
It's not a question if Cat 4's can work as a team. The question is should they. No way. Just race and go for it. Racing as a team in Cat 4 takes the fun out of it and turns people off when you are still learning.
he drifted too far back, and found an opening on the sheltered side of the rode. He got a little lucky that gap existed, especially on the last lap, it wouldn't exist in a p/1/2 race. His sprint timing and impromptu teamwork in the last 1/2 lap was fantastic.
Surely "Know your opponent" is the most relevant point in relation to his positioning during the race. He knew what they, and he, could do when push came to shove.

And let me add, that whatever good stuff I did was in large part influenced by Jeff's advice. I watch his vids religiously.
Jeff making dreams come true, great racing🍌
Arthur representing!
Dude great job out there!!
Nicely done!
That is one hell of a 30 seconds sprint there.
He is a fit fella.
just hitting 170 heartrate 200 meter AFTER the finish line - He had juice for another lap - great video - great commentary. Keep it up
I have a low peak HR. I think it's genetic. So 160 for me is pain.

❤
Welcome to weeknight crits in DFW. Soooo many fit riders. He's not a sandbagger, just made the best move. I rode for that Giant team last season.
Hope the shoulder is revoering well Jeff and thanks Brian. Also thanks to Arthur for the video

What's up PACC! From the looks of it this is a race from a couple of years ago. PACC shows up for that Tuesday night race all summer. Great team!
Great analysis! Thanks! The Little 500 is coming and since you are laid up, it would be awesome, if you have time, to get some analysis. I am sure the college kids in the race would love it!

I wasn't racing that day, but I've raced that course. So great to see a Texas crit on here!

Congrats!
Just watched FRENEMIES covering Grants Tomb Crit 2 years ago and I really like these commentaries with Brian!
Oh man! That is probably one of the first ones we did!
Keep em comimg man! Hopefully one day I'll be lucky enough to have you guys critique one of my videos.

I like the old less simple NorCal Logo more ...Good job Arthur!

Yesss let's get some of the Matrix boys on NorCal!

This keeps me motivated🔥 ty hahaha
Recovering from a crash damn i miss cycling
I used to run track. watching these videos kinda give the same feeling running the 4x400. I might try cycling out.
Great win, Arthur!
Watch his shadow, he's just chilling on the hoods with straight arms until 500m to go.
T-shirt: "Rule #1: Don't Chase Teammates*" (*unless you're Glenn) in small type at the bottom. I'd wear that.
HR is indicative of fitness but it varies dramatically from person to person.
Wow that was a sweet sprint for Cat 4. I race Cat 4, but my maximum sprint speed is only 34 miles an hour 😶.
I don't want to ruin the vibe here, but it was actually a cat 3/4 race. Minor point.
Masterclass in patience by Arthur
The last 45 secs ..... Just thrills
I'd try to hit those drainage ditches like a pump track, although they looked a little long I bet there's still some advantage to gain
Yeah, what happened to Logan???
CAT 4 that hasn't gotten enough points yet. Great video!
Other cat 4 indicators, kit has Giant bikes logo but rider is riding an s works lol

I feel like this guy could have won even from a far worse position with that thermonuclear sprint
Probably.. but another way of looking at it is he also could have won with a very mediocre Sprint because of how well he timed it and positioned himself that whole last lap. I'll bet he could have made like 300 fewer watts and still won.
@@NorCalCycling true as well hahah
what a sprint man!!!
Love your videos
Texas roads are always sketchy
Pretty new profile picture.
Doing my first ever crit this weekend in Colchester. Any tips from the 'seasoned pros'?
Well, I did it. Tonnes of fun!
Thanks @NorCal Cycling for providing the inspiration to give it a go!

hes not cat 4 lol, hes a whole beach not a sandbag!
ahhahahahaha
Can you sub footage w/ all but power? I don't have a power meter.
Nice
My heart when to 150 just watching this
What's going on with Logan?

Lol, it doesn't matter how he saves energy, dude is HR is low. Means he is just strolling on the park.
What is "sandbagging?"
When you race a category that is too easy or below your skill level
typically dropping to a lower division than what your're capable of so you can more easily win against less fit and less knowledgeable opponents
Sandbagging in general, just means that you're not trying your hardest. Hiding your power level.
What mercedes do in every f1 test
So did he play this perfectly? Or is your commentary about him drifting too far back valid regardless of the W?
he drifted too far back, and found an opening on the sheltered side of the rode. He got a little lucky that gap existed, especially on the last lap, it wouldn't exist in a p/1/2 race. His sprint timing and impromptu teamwork in the last 1/2 lap was fantastic.
