You can get micro SD card adapters so you don't have to use the crap Sony cards! I found one for 99 cents on ebay lol, but they're just a couple bucks on your favorite Chinese drop shipping site.
Sony was ahead of it's time in many areas and not just PSP....it's really sad to see that just because of them being so far ahead that they weren't that successful unfortunately.
Amazing memories playing my PSP. From playing Ratchet & Clank, to watching DBZ episodes that I... "found," and multiplayer mayhem with Medal of Honor Heroes. I love it so much!
The problem with the PSP-3000 model was, ironically, the screen. While it was brighter, ghosting was more apparent on it. I still have my PSP-2000 to this day and I even modded in a larger battery into it. The VIta was top tier though but it just didn't do too well. I love that thing and it's magic sleep mode that lasts for months on end "somehow" and you come back to it with barely any battery lost.
I had no idea until now that Sega must have ripped its VMU off from Sony. I was super jealous as a kid of the Dreamcast but ultimately it was all good because I got my ps2 the first Christmas of its release. I remember almost being in tears because the only big box for me under the tree was a near perfect cube and because I knew the ps2 itself was very much rectangular. Needless to say when I ripped that paper I was legit blown away and in near shock. Best Christmas ever

A lot of the times we wouldn't have internet so i would go in the bathroom and hold my phone up to the window to catch the neighbors WIFI. The PSP was truly such a great console, a PS2/PS3 Hybrid. Wish i could go back
Probably one of my favorite thing about the PSP, I had tivos and could download shows to my computer and then upload them to the PSP. So when I traveled I could watch shows on the PSP before tablets and smart phones were so prevalent. I miss my PSP 1000.
the nostalgia is flowing back in with the psp i played that thing non stop and i loved it just never realized i could download ps1 games onto before it was too late but i still had such a fun time with it
Actually bought a vita but didn't have money to get games but I dropped it breaking the screen 😅 but then! Couple of years ago (I think 2018 or 19. I bought it in 2012 I believe) I fixed it up and homebrewed it as well. Honestly a underrated console. Have had so much fun with it. And the homebrew community has and still is working hard with it too
The only thing I don't agree with here is the psp street. Yes, it was cheap. But considering the price, having a flawless 3000 (less saturated) display, a matte finish, the bulkiness of the 1000 and a muuuch better 3.5mm jack position, the price is actually a good thing. Also yes, no wifi. I get that people wanted to play together, but I barely knew people with psp's back then where I live because they were generally too expensive. Also, the thing that everyone keeps bringing up: the mono speaker. It's mono, yes. But it's extremely loud and pretty clear when compared to the other psp's. I have all models, yet i keep getting back to the street even now because it has the best performance + everything mentioned above.
Steam Deck runs very well all ported games from Playstation. A similar handheld, perhaps with the upcoming RDNA 3, just released, and with FSR 3.0., would be a good start for a new portable Sony console!
My fave thing about the PSP go is the fact that you could buy a dock with video out, along with the ability to link a ps3 controller via bluetooth. It is incredibly easy to hack nowadays too. It was a switch before a switch.
I will never forget the first PSP. I was so excited that I imported the Japanese model before it even came out in the US. I think I paid something crazy like $320usd at the time too. Wish I still had it.
I was one of those lucky kids who got a psp right when they came out, that thing was awesome. Lord of the rings tactics, mega man, MLB 2k6, kill zone, rainbow 6 Vegas, God of War, grand theft auto and burnout just to name a few.
Mega Man, God of ware and GTA was really nostalgic, I'm pretty sure I was 5yrs or so when I got it. But I'm one of the only ppl who played and loved ape Academy. That was the best
I had the Xperia Play and yes, sometimes it was a bit slow and not as flashy as newer flagship phones in that time, but that phone was great for school, I played ff7 and lots of emulated nintendo games on it and most of the time it worked flawless, but ps1 games could stutter. I wish sony would release such a phone with modern hw.
But hey! Look on the bright side. We got the PS Portal. Definitely NOT just a controller cut in half with a screen that can only stream games on local wi-fi… Right?
I will always love the PSP and what it meant to me as a gamer back when I got it. I still say it's the best handheld of all time and I will die on that hill. It did things modern handhelds are only just now refining. It did TV display, full console quality games, and entertainment center stuff well before the Switch or the Steam Deck were doing similar things. The PSP walked so the Switch and the Steam Deck could run. Was UMD a little cumbersome? It was. Was the Memory Stick stuff less than optimal before adapters? A little, yes. Overall, though, it was the best handheld I've ever used and I'd still prefer it over anything Nintendo has come up with before or since.
To be clear, I have owned every Sony system up until the PS5, and I have had many fun times on all of them. PocketStation was Sony aping the Dreamcast's VMU and its ability to independently play simple minigames. Sony has a long history of taking things its competitors are doing and throwing them all onto its consoles to be all "look, ours does it too!" -Dual Shock PS1 controller copying the analog stick and rumble pack that the N64 did first -PS Move adding Wii-esque motion controls -PSVR cashing in on the hype brought by the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive -Dual Shock 4 adds touch pad following Wii-U's touch screen These aren't even the only examples, just the ones off the top of my head.
•Sony and Nintendo teamed up to make PS1, partnership broke and Sony refined and published the console, hence the sticks and rumble. •PS Move yes is obviously a steal from the Wii, however they introduced it to compete with the hype of the new kind of family console remote haze, changing their version for different things. •PSVR released the same year as Oculus Rift CV1 and HTC Vive which means they had been working on it for a while and then managed to sell the PSVR as the most bought headset of all time due to how accessible VR would be for the millions of PS4 and now PS5 owners. •Touch Pad and touch screens are different, it was introduced to be able to do basic touch and pointer tasks like you could on the PSVita. Then they used it more for game menus and messaging, as the Share button had made it so gamers lost an option button.
This video hits home, the PSP 3000 was my second console ever (after the PS2), i loved it sooo much, i used to bring it literally everywhere and play (school, birthdays, dinner). One day it stopped saving game data and i couldn't use it anymore, sad.
I still remember buying one of those really expensive Vita memory cards and dropping the little thing on the way home, annoys me to this day. As for the PSP, I remember at the time in the UK the exchange rates were quite favourable (unlike now) and because the Japanese version had the better screen, I ended up importing it from Thailand (I think) from Ebay, and it ended costing me £30 less than buying it directly from the UK, the memory card situation wasn't as bad as the Vita as Sandisk also had the license to release their own cards, that were not only cheaper, were also faster too, and came in clear plastic, I still have both my Vita and PSP, don't know if they work though.
I was playing my PS Vita consistently from November 2015 (when I first got it) up until 2020 (the pandemic discouraged me to bring it out). I even had my Nintendo Switch in 2018 but I didn’t have enough games that I liked to convert just yet I miss the PS Vita, I still play it from time to time (same with my PSP) but still not as much as I used to. It feels rare. The switch has taken over. I am waiting for the day Sony decides to come back to the handheld gaming world.
I was surprised when everyone was in awe about Switch's main gimmick, when sooo many years before I spent hundreds of hours playing PSP games like Monster Hunter on the big screen through those cables. What's most funny is that there's literally zero difference between the two, it's not like the Switch docks into a GPU unit or something, it's still using its own power and connecting to a TV in the exact same manner through a simple port (yes there was even a TV dock for the PSPgo). And considering PSP's smaller size it also worked infinitely better as a portable system.
I wish Sony would've made a portable PS4, would give the digital PS4 games more lifetime and developers would probably make more money considering every major release has been cross gen for the past few years.
I bought psp 1000 back in 2007 and it was ahead of its time. It was my main entertainment device because i worked at the remote location at that time. Play games, watch movies etc. I felt like the coolest person in my circle 😎. I still have it right now but it's broken, might try to restored it some day i hope.
The PSP was Way ahead of it's time. I actually bought a used one earlier this year replaced the battery as the battery didn't hold a charge properly, and then did a jailbreak so now I got a bunch of my favorite PSP games
i have xperia Play, bought in 2021 I use for PSP and PS1 games, as well as an emulator for older consoles. Well, games under 2.3 android came out quite good. Minecraft, for example.
I actually owned an Xperia play my parents bought me one because Rogers here in Canada were having a deal and my dad wanted a new phone. I absolutely loved that phone
There's a Japanese Monster Hunter PSP 3000 that used the body of the 1000 for comfort and is also able to make use of higher capacity batteries because of the extra battery door space, it's also the only one that has concave analog stick to my knowledge.
You really can't overstate how badly the memory card pricing scuppered the Vita completely. I was ready to walk out of Game (UK) in 2012 with a Vita in hand after trying Wipeout 2048 and being blown away, until the sales rep informed me that a memory card big enough to download a good cache of games on my crummy rural internet connection would cost ALMOST THE PRICE OF THE SYSTEM AGAIN. At least it's found a new lease of life with a thriving homebrew community
I was initially upset my dad got me the PSP coz I had my heart set on the NDS at the time. The morning he put that cool, sleek, device in my hands…….. It was LOVE. I ran my fingers over the buttons, wiggled the analog stick a little. I even turned it on without him telling me where the Power switch was. I just instinctively knew.
If you pick up a Monster Hunter Edition PSP 3000, you get the Bright Screen, all the PSP3000 features PLUS the moulded back panel like a PSP1000. The absolute best of both worlds! :)
I remember when the update for web browser dropped on psp as a teenage boy. It was a marathon. Downloading gigs upon gigs of mp4s. It was a great time to be alive.
I still have my PSP 1000. Don't use it much, but every now and then I charge it up and play with it. The screen smears like a gynecologist, but it's still fun.

I got my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate and it could do basically everything I did on PSP. But was more pocket friendly. But I'd honestly go back to something larger if it was a PSP.
Still have my PSPs God of war, MGS, and Crisis Core PSPs only have a handful of games and the batteries are long dead. My god of war one is hacked with CFW.
@DONT READ MY PROFILE PICTURE ok I wont
I'm only 13 and I still remember having a PSP, vita, PSP go and the original white xbox 360. My dad bought it with a sd card loaded with hundreds of games. I was young and didn't know anything, so when my brother broke the SD card I through it away, thinking it was broken. I also wanted to clean my vita, and stupid me washed it in the sink🌚🤡💀
3:05 The Memory Stick was competing against the SD card at the time to become the flash storage card standard. so it's not truly proprietary.
Amazing memories playing my PSP. From playing Ratchet & Clank, to watching DBZ episodes that I... "found," and multiplayer mayhem with Medal of Honor Heroes. I love it so much!
the best memory for me is when i hacked my psp and got access to so much more
The problem with the PSP-3000 model was, ironically, the screen.
Ahhh the memories of connecting to the Internet and experiencing my first glimpse of the amazing catalogue of home videos 😮💨 thank you psp
As a former Toys ' r ' us worker, saying " psp go did not sell very well" is understating how mixed the love was and how many were made
Omg. The moment I saw ATV Off Road Fury on that PSP. You immediately brought me back to several wonderful memories within milliseconds. Thank you.
ATV Offroad Fury is the sport of Kings.
As a owner of psp 1000,3000 street, psp go and even a ps vita 2000 I really strive for a new handheld from Sony like imagine Spiderman or red dead running on a handled ps5 it would feel magical
time to look at the unofficial ways via steam deck ;)
I'm only 13 and I still remember having a PSP, vita, PSP go and the original white xbox 360. My dad bought it with a sd card loaded with hundreds of games. I was young and didn't know anything, so when my brother broke the SD card I through it away, thinking it was broken. I also wanted to clean my vita, and stupid me washed it in the sink🌚🤡💀
With all these competition Handhelds I highly doubt Sony wants to waste money on getting into that market. Plus like the guy above me said, the unofficial handheld doing what you want is the steam deck. And I have one and it does just that lol
1:04 PMSL, so funny, glad you kept it in. I am sure the younger Austin looked at more on the PSP too, loved the video, some good humour as always, some cool tech too, keep up the good work :) @9:14 worst British "hello" ever matey lol. and don't dis the 50Hz and PAL :P carry on playing with your psp'neeesss :)
As someone who lives in the UK i laughed my head off at the ello you pulled off
Man I’m just getting Nostalgia looking at all of this. I use to have the PSP 3000 Model and Currently have the PS Vita TV.
2:48 12 year old me with my glitter white Assassins creed PSP looking up every possible porn site known to mankind... A lot of the times we wouldn't have internet so i would go in the bathroom and hold my phone up to the window to catch the neighbors WIFI. The PSP was truly such a great console, a PS2/PS3 Hybrid. Wish i could go back
19:15 So glad you mentioned this. It’s so true and kinda sad. The Vita deserves a 2nd chance
The Xperia Play was awesome! I had a GBA Emulator on it, and it made GB playing games so much fun!
Probably one of my favorite thing about the PSP, I had tivos and could download shows to my computer and then upload them to the PSP. So when I traveled I could watch shows on the PSP before tablets and smart phones were so prevalent. I miss my PSP 1000.
the nostalgia is flowing back in with the psp i played that thing non stop and i loved it just never realized i could download ps1 games onto before it was too late but i still had such a fun time with it
PSP was ahead of it's time
Oh and as per usual Austin breaks something once again 😂
As usual, not as per usual. Redundant
The pocket station was for the game Final Fantasy VIII for the Chocobo mini game
Hey heyyyyyyy... I see that mic on the psp at 4:32! That's a 3000!!! But that was definitely a 2000 in your hands! I'll return to my cave now lol.
I still have 2 PSP's. I keep going back to them for being very, very, very solid emulation-machines.
My fave thing about the PSP go is the fact that you could buy a dock with video out, along with the ability to link a ps3 controller via bluetooth. It is incredibly easy to hack nowadays too. It was a switch before a switch.
I had a PS Vita that I only owned for a day, because the next day I took it to school and it got stolen. RIP to the many years I could've had with it.
Handhealds are so coolll i LOVE them. Specially my psp go and ps vita 1000, i still play them today
I will never forget the first PSP. I was so excited that I imported the Japanese model before it even came out in the US. I think I paid something crazy like $320usd at the time too. Wish I still had it.
Thanks!
Then you have the Steam Deck :)
You're the only person I've seen mention that Lord of the rings game anywhere LMFAO, I really liked it too.
I speak on behalf of all my UK PALs, when I say that terrible British accent was straight out of Mary Poppins 😂
Overall, though, it was the best handheld I've ever used and I'd still prefer it over anything Nintendo has come up with before or since.
still want a 1001 but can't afford them atm
I had a psp but my mom sold it for less than half the price because she thought the battery would explode 😭
I love the new editing 😂
To be clear, I have owned every Sony system up until the PS5, and I have had many fun times on all of them. PocketStation was Sony aping the Dreamcast's VMU and its ability to independently play simple minigames. Sony has a long history of taking things its competitors are doing and throwing them all onto its consoles to be all "look, ours does it too!"
-Dual Shock PS1 controller copying the analog stick and rumble pack that the N64 did first
-PS Move adding Wii-esque motion controls
-PSVR cashing in on the hype brought by the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive
-Dual Shock 4 adds touch pad following Wii-U's touch screen
These aren't even the only examples, just the ones off the top of my head.
Ok dude
9:09 me as a German watching this, busted out in laughter. The way he says "GUTEN TAG" HELP-
This was excellent, love these history type videos
warning shaky camera, you never herd of a tripod
This is probably an interesting video, but I don't think I can make it past the 2 minute mark without having a stroke from your editing style
I even had my Nintendo Switch in 2018 but I didn’t have enough games that I liked to convert just yet
I miss the PS Vita, I still play it from time to time (same with my PSP) but still not as much as I used to. It feels rare. The switch has taken over. I am waiting for the day Sony decides to come back to the handheld gaming world.
Like this now.
One of the first things I learnt in film school is NTSC stands for Never Twice the Same Colour, and PAL stands for Perfection At Last.
“If you can’t beat ‘em, give up and fail. That’s the Sony way.” I like this one, made me laugh
Awesome video 🔥 so happy to see big TH-camrs give exposure to these gem consoles, i own a vita and its amazing!
TeXtMe DiReCtLy🤙🤙🥶🥶..
I wish Sony would've made a portable PS4, would give the digital PS4 games more lifetime and developers would probably make more money considering every major release has been cross gen for the past few years.
TeXtMe DiReCtLy🤙🤙🥶🥶..
I bought psp 1000 back in 2007 and it was ahead of its time. It was my main entertainment device because i worked at the remote location at that time. Play games, watch movies etc. I felt like the coolest person in my circle 😎. I still have it right now but it's broken, might try to restored it some day i hope.
I had a PSP Go and a PSP 3000. I had both of them hacked, so I used homebrew software to rip games on the 3000 and play them on the Go.
The PSP was Way ahead of it's time. I actually bought a used one earlier this year replaced the battery as the battery didn't hold a charge properly, and then did a jailbreak so now I got a bunch of my favorite PSP games
Guten Tag Austin,
watching your videos from Germany :P
Ahhhh the chime at the end brought me way back 😢 time flys
I live in a PAL region and I watch your vids, so we can watch you
i have xperia Play, bought in 2021 I use for PSP and PS1 games, as well as an emulator for older consoles. Well, games under 2.3 android came out quite good. Minecraft, for example.
I actually owned an Xperia play my parents bought me one because Rogers here in Canada were having a deal and my dad wanted a new phone. I absolutely loved that phone
I had just dug up my psp go and original vita the other day too. Such cool tech. Need to look into what my vita can be used for today
Dude it’s a pretty awesome retro handheld check out retro gaming corp on TH-cam he has really good tutorials
Special occasion....I have a feeling he's gonna make The Ultimate PSP.
If he could get all those accessories that everyone on Reddit has been looking for for years then he is a true God.
You can't really complain about having a single analogue stick for FPS when game controls were different back then.
TeXtMe DiReCtLy🤙🤙🥶🥶..
9:08 Austin saying "Guten Tag!" really terrified me for some reason.
So many of these devices I still play with after modding.
I remember the first ever Austin vid I watched was that razed gaming tablet back in 2012/13 and how crazy people were for mobile games
TeXtMe DiReCtLy🤙🤙🥶🥶..
One more Playstation TV was the Playstation Play TV which was the PS3 USB tv tuner. It was my mainstay tv for years.
i always cry when i see the PSP, i loved it so much.
sad that there won't be a new one😭
The vibe in these videos are so cool i wish i was there just to experience the team and the videomaking
There's a Japanese Monster Hunter PSP 3000 that used the body of the 1000 for comfort and is also able to make use of higher capacity batteries because of the extra battery door space, it's also the only one that has concave analog stick to my knowledge.
12 year old me also loved the psp and it’s internet
You really can't overstate how badly the memory card pricing scuppered the Vita completely. I was ready to walk out of Game (UK) in 2012 with a Vita in hand after trying Wipeout 2048 and being blown away, until the sales rep informed me that a memory card big enough to download a good cache of games on my crummy rural internet connection would cost ALMOST THE PRICE OF THE SYSTEM AGAIN. At least it's found a new lease of life with a thriving homebrew community
Austin talking about his adventures with the PSP reminds me I never had an original experience.
I still use my psp go today to play ps1 classics. Battery life is still strong, wifi works, bluetooth, everything is perfect.
“You can’t really do anything with the PSP Go anymore”
👀
I, living in PAL-region, actually enjoyed the Xperia Play until the phone dropped between train rails only 15 months after buying it 😢
PSPnis! that's the funniest thing Austin has ever said. lol
The way technology is going..it is almost Inevitable that all gaming will be portable one day
TeXtMe DiReCtLy🤙🤙🥶🥶..
I remember when the update for web browser dropped on psp as a teenage boy. It was a marathon. Downloading gigs upon gigs of mp4s. It was a great time to be alive.
This was an incredible video, a time capsule for sure! Thanks Austin
Yo, Austin saying "Guten Tag" just hits diffenrent, especially if you are german 🤣
I still have my PSP 1000. Don't use it much, but every now and then I charge it up and play with it. The screen smears like a gynecologist, but it's still fun.
