    • @TheMrcauchy
      @TheMrcauchy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Not really! The whole point of an away goal weighing more is to counterbalance the advantage the home team has by playing on their own stadium with the support of the crowd, thus leveling the field in some shape or form. Abolishing this rule mid-match and suddenly unleveling the contest does not make any sense, since you're not playing the "tiebreaker" on a neutral ground. So, either you completely get rid of the rule, or you leave it in place for the entire tie.

      @@ishaandw Sorry, but I don't agree. It's the principle that it's harder to score goals away from home that's behind this rule. When the extra time starts, they're still playing in conditions which are biased towards the home team. What you're saying is whichever of the two teams is not lucky enough to host the 2nd leg should be on the downside of advantage in the extra time.

      You've hit a new low of dumbness by not explaining why or how.Steves reasoning may have been a bit vague but hes right,the Away Goal Rule should stand cos its a daunting task to score or win away from home,the away crowd,the travel,unfamilar ground,all play a part.The Away Game may not be as big deal when ur playing small teams in group stages but when ur playing a team neck to neck with you playing at their Home and winning is not easy.CL will change if away goal rule is scrapped,there will be huge change in tactics,teams will attack at home and park the bus at away games,play for penalties,etc.

      If you knew what Steve Nicole played when he was a player you can see his point of view ... But I honestly believe the away goal should be scrapped ... Just best of 2 games ... Most goals wins ... Or why not make it 2 games ... One team wins and then the other team wins the next game so they go to extra time then on and then penalties or play a 3rd game to decide it at a neutral stadium (anywhere that isn't a home game to either) ... But it shouldn't and won't ever be that complicated .... So that's why if it's a draw after 2 games the second match should just go to extra time ... Or play a golden goal in ET ... And if it's tied either way take it to pens ....

    • @aviraltripathi9232
      @aviraltripathi9232 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the end you have to win the game . That's the point that Ali was also trying to make . Though playing at home gives motivational advantage and pitch suitability but it also add extra pressure .For eg in that Barcelona comeback against PSG ,if sergi Roberto had not scored that goal ,Barca would have won the match 5-1 , but won't have gone to lose it , despite playing so brilliantly. Coming to Steve's argument of defending , you can also defend irrespective of whether away goal exsists or not .

      @aviraltripathi9232 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @barry instead of pretending that you know everything about football, just try and understand others' argument.I know what a huge difference home atmosphere makes (Anfield experience, just once though) .But how a good home performance say that 7-1 is better than 6-0 . Which is more dominant. If both teams screwed up away matches then , how will you say which screwed up more if scores are level .And amongst this debate , Steve Nicole is arguing art of defending is getting lost .That is why I said , his comments appear out of place confusing .
      Try and understand before passing the verdict and writing off anyway.

    • @brunokallasfs
      @brunokallasfs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Parking the bus may not be the most entertaining style of play but it is a style of play that should not be discouraged. Defending is such an underrated skill in football. Being able to defend with discipline for an entire match is a brilliant achievement. It requires great team chemistry and communication to cover every opponent and passing lane, it requires significant understanding of how your opponents play, and it requires an immense amount of stamina and mental toughness especially in the final minutes when everyone is gassed and prone to error. If parking the bus is a winnable tactic, then instead of discouraging it, come up with a strategy to stop it.

    The away goal rule is designed to have more even games (both attacking/defending) in each leg. As an away team, instead of just sitting deep and trying not to concede, you are now incentivised to push for a goal. Equally the home team can't just throw wave after wave of attack at the other team, they are made to be defensively responsible.

    There is an argument for the away goals rule, but Stevie presented something confusing. The away goal rule is meant to be a leveler for teams when they play away. But, i think people also overlook that both teams have a home match. What comes to mind is dortmund vs Madrid back in 2013. Supposing madrid were to win 3-0, why is their 3-0 victory at home more meritous than dortmunds 4-1 win at home? It doesn't seem to make sense. If a team at home draws 0-0 in the first leg and have a tough 2nd away leg, then the onus is on the team that didnt deliver in the first leg. I dont seem to have too many gripes with the current system as others do, but the logic of the rule doesnt seem to add up

In later rounds, you could determine it by a ranking or some sort of random draw if both teams finished top or both 2nd. Just like it other american sports, the higher seed is rewarded with game 7 at home if it goes that far.

    This change they are discussing is very questionable. Right now it's the home teams which are somehow blocked in terms of going all upfront as they may be afraid of conceding. But if this rule was changed, it could mean away teams would be playing even more defensive than they do now, because this goal or especially goals (more than one) they sometimes aim for would be less valuable than it is now.

    • @GiulianoIbarreta
      @GiulianoIbarreta 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For anyone asking, here's a situation, real time:
      AFF Suzuki Cup 1st Leg
      Vietnam vs Philippines
      December 2, 2018
      Home:PHL
      🇻🇳2:1🇵🇭
      A2:1H Leg 1
      Value of Away goal = 4:1
      (2:0 for H to win) because 2 away goals is as good as 4 goals, twice the value plus the 1 home goal allows for a minimum situation for the Philippines to win.
      in the second leg, if new score line is 0:1, which will yield 2:2 on AGG, the value of the away goal is consistent at 2x, this is expressed as;
      2:1,1st leg: (away)2x:x
      +
      0:1, 2nd leg: 0:2x(away)
      =2(2):1
      + 0:2(1)
      =4:3, Vietnam still wins if PHL scores 1-nil in the 2nd leg
      this explains in mathematical terms why this situation requires at least a 2-nil away-win on the 2nd leg.

    If a game reaches extra time after the 2nd leg, the away goal shouldn't count in extra time... so only for 180 minutes(90 in first leg +90 2nd leg). Not fair for who ever plays home the 2nd leg

    • @alexbeltran6668
      @alexbeltran6668 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeffame7 the home team for 2nd leg is the group winners which makes sense, they earned it. Then for the rest of the tournament, the team with the better coefficient should get home for the 2nd leg

    We are asking the wrong question(s). The away goal worth TWO has been
    accepted for 56 years as a good alternative to flicking a coin to decide
    who goes through and only now that the rule benefits PORTUGAL it is
    being questioned. I am absolutely convinced that if instead of
    Portugal it was France befitting, the rule would not be questioned.
    The rule will never be scrapped... just questioned because it Portugal
    that's involved.

Do you think you can just get some people with accents and they are automatically qualified to talk about the sport? That shows how out of touch ESPN is in the culture.

  • @ginomoujik8488

    Why was away-goal rule introduced in the first place? Away teams played too defensively.
    Home support inspired teams to attack, so there was no problem with teams playing defensively at home.
    Things have changed. Now home support for many teams have no problem to see their team park the bus for 90 mins.
    AGR certainly contributes to that.
    I think the change back will initially have a positive effect, until teams re-adjust and start playing conservatively away again.
    Then it's time to change again! :)
    p.s. AGR makes cup games different from league games.

    A goal is a goal. It equals 1 its not more important if its at home or away. The team with the most total goals on aggregate should advance period. if they are tie on aggregate at the end of the 2nd leg it should be OT/PKs to determine the real winner.

    The away goal rule has to stay, if at the end of two legs it is a tie, the team with the most away goals should go through. If you just carry on with normal extra time it is unfair to the away team in the 2nd leg as the home team get 30 mins extra with home advantage. I can't think of any other fair way to settle a tie.

  • @kevinndyabandiho1838

    Removing the away goals rule makes it more possible teams to easily come back from a first leg loss. For example the game against MANCITY vs SPURS ( 4-4 ) which ended with spurs going through on away goals

    Raphael Varane is a world class defender who won the Champions League with Madrid and the world Cup with France. He set defensive records in La Liga and played every single minute during the French triumph. Why was he not even considered for UEFA POTY? What about Ballon 'dor? He is a defender. Steve is just saying that people don't care about defensive starlets anymore. He wants them to shine like attackers do and why not?

    What he's saying is away goals should count a little more in a tie, that's all...
    Say for example, PSV come to Barca and score a goal, that goal should edge out goals scored by Barca at home in their comfort zone, just as Barca's goal at PSV would count a little more in a tie.
    I do not agree with him though. Nowadays playing away isn't as daunting as it used to be
    Either way both teams will have a chance to score away goals and home goals... 🤷🏾‍♂️

  • @Goldensquare.
    @Goldensquare. 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's tough , both arguments are quite strong. But if you ask me personally, I would say that nothing outside the football field should influence the result of the game, only goals. Because every goal is an effort.
    On the contrary, games like Barcelona vs PSG where a 5-5 aggregate would have favored PSG to go through , had it not been for the away goal for PSG, Barcelona really needed to push beyond leveled score to advance. And people will remember games like these.
    It seems to me that away goal accidentally serves both the purpose of logic and crowd.

    Cognitive dissonance at it's finest. In no other walk of life does this make sense, but because we've had it this way for a long time people lose their rocker about changing it.
    All they need to do is change the away goals rule, give it 2 years and everyone would be fine with it.
