Why Doom Guy and Isabelle Became Best Friends

- Ever wonder how a meme gets started? The friendship between Doom Guy from Doom Eternal and Isabelle from Animal Crossing may seem straightforward (after all, both games were released on the same day, the 20th of March), but there's more to these things than a simple shared date.
The story of Doom Guy and Isabelle is the story of two fandoms coming together in celebration of their shared love of games - even though these games couldn't possibly be any different.
In order to track down the origin of the Doom Guy/Isabelle meme, we spoke to Agent Strange, who has been cataloguing it from the start, and who commissioned one of the first pieces of artwork that paired the Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal characters together.

Fun fact: Doom Guy is actually a huge animal lover and owned a pet rabbit called Daisy.
Another fun fact: the doom Slayer literally killed trillions of demons because they decapitated Daisy and put her head on a pike so he literally sealed himself in hell and murdered them until he passed out and found himself in another dimension.
Flips Poogie well not in cannon, she’s an Easter egg. It’s weird like in (I think) the ending of Doom 1 she died but she’s back for some reason even though it’s in the same universe. Unless the Slayer got a new bunny no idea how she is alive.

Also don't forget that the multiverse and hell connection could mean that for a while, Doomguy was going through all the WADS made by the community. Each WADS being a different part of the multiverse, essentially giving him near unlimited demons to kill.
Because there just wasn't enough demons in his own universe to make up for how they defiled Daisy.

It may seem strange on the surface, but it makes sense if you actually dived a little bit deeper into their characters.
Doomguy may seem like a savage hulking brute, and certainly is the crawling creatures of hell, but really he's a man trying to protect what is good left in the world. In Doom canon, Doomguy lost everything from his family, to his pet rabbit Daisy.
His savage anger and unending blood stained rampage is fueled by a genuine care to protect what good is left and make sure it doesn't suffer the same fate as so many others. Doomguy would get along with Isabelle and most of the other villagers because they're what he wants to protect, he must rip and tear so that they may never have to.
....Also Isabelle is probably stressed from her secretary work, so she needs to vent every now and again.
Damn I feel like crying reading this. Doom Slayer truly is unsung hero. Many ppl just judge him as bad guy just because he is so violence and disgusted but deeply he is a gentle giant and really loves animal too.

There's actually a bit of evidence of Doomguy's caring in Doom 2016. (haven't played eternal yet) Spoilers ahead:
First of all, if he didn't care, why would he get angry at Dr. Hayden when he says that "their interest in hell was purely for the betterment of mankind" (here doomguys looks at a nearby dead body and smashes the console, clearly angry). Or my favorite evidence, why did he back up Vega? He literally had NO reason to do it, yet he did.
And in past games... why throw himself to hell, he had already kicked the demons out of phobos?

Samus can be pretty brutal when killing enemies not doom guy brutal but prying open your enemy's mouth shoving your weapon in and shooting them from the inside is a pretty brutal way to kill your enemy.

I think the reason this meme made it big is because of the sheer contrast between the characters. Doomguy routinely shoots demons until they are dead while Isabelle routinely does random mundane duties around a village/island. Plus, Isabelle likely reminds Doomguy of Daisy; his pet rabbit who was killed between Doom 1 and 2.

Something that definitely propelled it from the doom side of things is that the character doomguy/slayer canonically likes cute things, for example his pet bunny daisy which is more or less the lynchpin of the entire series.

I don't think any canon is effected. I don't know how they ass-pulled the "your fanart is canon" statement with no evidence. The developers shouldn't mess up both franchises because of a meme. I'm a BIG fan of Doom, and I'm proud of the community for doing this. It's adorable, and just goes to show how two very different fandoms can come together.
Also because it's just wholesome to see Doomguy/Doomslayer being friends with a cute dog, or seeing the adorable secretary putting knowledge gained from the massively macho man to good use.
And Doomdad is always a wonderful thing to see.

Up until the point where she is like "wait, didn't Tom Nook ask me to do something?"
Its Canon that Doomguy has a soft spot for small, cute animals, since in Doom, he basically pulled a John Wick on the demons after they killed his pet bunny, Daisy. So it makes sense that he'd want to protect his new small animal friend and teach her how to defend herself to avoid the same fate.
This whole thing just reminds me exactly of the Brutus and Pixie comics. Only amplified by steroids.

When Isabelle joined a fighting game with Solid Snake, he gave her Slayer's contact info for "sci-fi" weapon training after she mastered the basics. Snake was impressed with how she used his old Brawl land mine as a Lloid Rocket.

I'm so used to seeing the Doom Slayer and Isabelle together that earlier when reading a PCGamer article I got a Doom Eternal video in the side ad and my first thought when seeing it was:"But where's Isabelle ?". So yep, I've pretty much blended the two completely x)
The DoomSlayer may be one of the most pure of heart badasses in all of videogames, and Isabelle is a great friend worth protecting
Now if only we can get an SMG4 DOOM Arc where Doom and Issabelee accept Shroomy the Mushroom the way he become today.
Technically, “Doom Guy” is refereed to as “the Slayer” in the game, so that’s what I like to call him.
He's also called Doom Guy and Doom Marine in Doom Eternal so use whatever name you prefer, they're all canon now.
On cannon he is doom guy (from Doom 1, 2, 64) that later received the title of slayer after he decided to stay in hell (end of doom 64) so both are correct
@SpokenTurtleBack But 16 and Eternal are also part of the same Canon as 1, 2, and 64... However we can call him Doom Guy or his even more glorious title.
He actually gets called Doom Guy by human survivors in one of the codex entries.

I feel like the colors of issabelle just contrasts and compares enough with dooms colors that it just works
It makes sense. Doomguy's eternal rage for evil is because it took away all the joy, innocence, and pretty much anything good that he was to protect and fight for. So it's understandable that he would be loving to the things he fights to avenge.

I think one of the biggest reasons there's friendliness is because the games differ so much and thus aren't directly in competition with each other. So neither is stepping on the other's toes.
My reaction was when I first heard about this is that it better last. I massively dislike the popular opinion of "as your age grows older, you will want to play the better and more complex games" and that was supposed to be M rated games. Because of this, I began to hold every thing against those types of games. I still won't look at them (except for P5) but now I can say that I am now going to be following this type of stuff. Because I love it! Warms my heart to see this and I demand more of it!
Well if you are looking for some good M rated games may I recommend Devil May Cry 1-5 (maybe skip 2 since it's pretty damn bad) and Bayonetta 1 and 2?

@orangeslash1667 Yeah, I know, but what does that have to do with anything? And to be fair, while Kamiya made both DMC and Bayonetta, he only worked on the first DMC. Every other one is Itsuno's baby.
