@9:22 "Was that a big song?" It was released as a single and a music video, but it was the fourth single off of a MONSTER album released in a year with tons of other monster albums. So not only were there three bigger RHCP hits at the time (Give It Away, Under the Bridge, Suck My Kiss) but there was plenty of other great rock, alternative, grunge, metal, rap & hip-hop music released in '91. Nevermind, Ten, Achtung Baby, the Black Album, The Low End Theory, Out of Time, Use Your Illusion I & II, Cypress Hill, Badmotofinger, Temple of the Dog, Mama Said, Into the Great Wide Open, etc. So yeah, it kinda flew under the radar.
Modern Red Hot Chilli Peppers is a departure from THIS era, which was so incredibly new and creative that it broke across the world. After "Give it Away" and "Under the Bridge" from the Blood Sugar Sex Magic album, I think this was the next single released. This marks the period between "early" Chilli Peppers when they were still underground, and their massive commercial successes of later periods. This album made them, and it's breathtaking from start to finish
10:19 You hit the nail on the head, here; George. This is Kiedis reflecting on his (non-parenting) by his father and his thinking about how that has affected him and his behavior. 100%
All 17 tracks are amazing! I bought this at basic training only going off the fact I knew Real Men Dont Kill Coyote and Higher Ground. I got to jam it the weekend I graduated and holy smokes, i played it for my metal head buddies and we were all like wow!!!! These guys are really fricking good.
This album was the peak of RHCP. Before all of their music started to sound exactly the same. You should definitely check out the entire album. It may be one of the best rock albums of all time.
At this point it is so interesting to see how these two have evolved as music reviewers. If on their first videos the comments were “good”, “cool” “nice vibe” now its pointing to the amazing bass and to the very unique drums that im not sure i have noticed when i first heard the song years ago.
Love the channel, guys! Can’t believe you haven’t done a review on Stryper yet! They’re honestly one of the best bands out there. Their talent is unreal, and their message is so powerful. You’re missing out on some serious musical greatness-hope to see you dive into their music soon!
Chili Peppers are my favorite band ever, nice reaction! I really want to see you guys reacting to Black Keys... a fantastic band with some beautiful tunes like Weight of Love, Too Afraid to Love You and many others. Shout out from Brazil!!
I was fortunate enough to see this song live in 2003. Anthony introduced the song by saying "This is maybe the third or fourth time we've played this live." Come to find out: it was the fourth time and I don't think they've played it since. Incredibly lucky!
@hollyroxy25 They've never said any reason, but there's a handful of reasons why they might not. It's acoustic and heavily percussive, it's in 3/4 time, it's tuned down half a step, and they also use other background instruments to frame it. It's basically a perfect studio song that's tough to replicate live. Also, when they tour, they tend to focus on their most recent albums so the most they put out, the less they focus on their older material.
Guys this is my exact point with rhcp, once you get past the hit songs you will find the ones that went “under the radar”. That’s the thing with them, most artists have 3-5 great/good songs on each album, if you check any album from them since blood sugar sex magik you will have a hard time finding 3 songs you can hate on or consider bad. Their floor is very high compared to their peers and don’t get me started talking about their B-sides, I swear this band leaves great songs outside of their albums, it’s almost a sport for them💀
This was the first song I ever heard from RHCP, on the radio around the time it first came out - can remember it totally just stopped me in my tracks, and 15 year old me just had to find out more!
For anybody who loves this CD there's a documentary called the funky monks on TH-cam it shows them recording this whole CD how they came up with the songs etc..sooo good
Why does no one ever talk about the uplift mofo party plan album? A band based on a plan, a plan based on a band lol. The special secret song inside is so great! No chump love sucker, behind the sun!
My favorite band!! I've been waiting for ya'all to do more Peppers!!! This is just an average song for that album. It's a transitional song from their punk days to their California sound.
6/8 time gives a noticeable "rolling" sort of feel. Combined with the acoustic guitar it's a lot different from their typical rocked out electric funk. "Sir Psycho Sexy" is the one y'all don't know you need.
I had this CD in my car 6 disc changer for close to two years, and listened to it every day for almost a year. It is a classic and you guys need to review the CD in it's entirety
The song didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100, but I remember hearing it regularly on the local alternative radio station in late 1992. It might have gone more mainstream if not for being swallowed up by the big hit on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under the Bridge.
Y'all really need to checkout some tunes from their album "Mother's Milk" too. This is my favorite RHCP album, and the first album with Chad Smith on the drums.
I was never a huge fan of RHCP (although I certainly respect them as being great musicians) but this was always, by far, my favorite song on BSSM. Back in the day, it got a little airplay and the video was shown on MTV for a bit, but after that, it was kind of "forgotten". I never really understood why it wasn't a big hit, but I guess it was just too much of a departure from what people were used to with the Chili Peppers. Great song!
IMO, their Magnus Opus! Every song is a banger. Such a brilliant Album!! In a span of a month or so in 1991, this album, along with Nevermind, Ten, Badmotorfinger was released.
The RHCPs used to be a funk band and were awesome. After BSSM they turned into an adult contemporary band. Crying shame. The phrase 'Breaking the girl' allegedly came when Anthony met River Phoenix's girlfriend Samantha, Flea said "he's going to break that girl"
This song is one of my favorite RHCP song and isn't ever heard (by me) on the radio. The syncopated drumming and bass are FIRE. WAY superior to Californication. Thanks for making this.
Yeah, this is from one of their best albums, if not their best and the reason I got into RHCP as a teen. They were my number one band for years, I was obsessed with them! But it really sucks how I cannot stand them now, even when listening back to some of their older stuff. I mean they truly do suck as a band now, their sound is so perfunctory and boring. But hey they still making the money I guess 😂 However, this is a one of the songs I can still listen to, albeit having to listen to that whine of a vocal.
This was a huge RHCP song back in the day. I think it was the third single off of that album after Under the Bridge and Give It Away. MTV played the video constantly. Amazing song, amazing album, amazing underrated band.
This is just one of those Albums.....worthy of a full review....Iconic early '90s music!!!
I could argue this album as maybe my favorite of all time. They caught lightning in a bottle with this one
100%
There's a documentary on TH-cam called the funky monks it's them recording this album in the mansion in California really good

When Chad Smith was trying to come up with a drum part for this song, I think it was Flea who told him to think of Manic Depression.
That's why it sounds so familiar! Great piece of trivia.
@stephanegirouard4579 It's like if the Beatles made a song inspired by Manic Depression
That makes sense!
Naked in the Rain or Apache Rose Peacock are great as well. In fact, all songs on that album are bangers.
So many funky grooves on this album!! This is so hard for them to not hear all the incredible bangers they’d love
Their best album IMO
This album (BSSM) and Mothers Milk are just amazing.

They were huge already.. this is the year they went on tour with nirvana and pearl jam.. 91
Btw. That was a great concert.
@@notreadytogigsaw that tour Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam opened
@SGED392 better show than the one I saw. I'm not really a nirvana fan
Sir Pschyco Sexy or we RIOT!
10:19 You hit the nail on the head, here; George.
This is Kiedis reflecting on his (non-parenting) by his father and his thinking about how that has affected him and his behavior.
100%
Yup, George is great at dissecting lyrics which is one of the aspects I love most about the channel
Soul to Squeeze and Higher Ground are my two favorites
Not only is this 100% RHCP, it fits perfectly in the album (which is a masterpiece).
That guitar is being played like it's a percussion instrument. Unique sound
Are you referring to the Mellotron?
Every song on that album is a classic
All 17 tracks are amazing! I bought this at basic training only going off the fact I knew Real Men Dont Kill Coyote and Higher Ground. I got to jam it the weekend I graduated and holy smokes, i played it for my metal head buddies and we were all like wow!!!! These guys are really fricking good.
Top 20 albums of all time.
This album was the peak of RHCP. Before all of their music started to sound exactly the same. You should definitely check out the entire album. It may be one of the best rock albums of all time.
Ignorant take, lot of variation in their later music too
I like a lot of songs on pretty much every album up to and including Stadium Arcadium.
Stadium Arcadium has a lot of variation I thought.
One of the best rock albums of all time.
If you think Purple Stain, Dosed and Wet Sand sound exactly the same then it’s time for a hearing checkup.
My favorite RHCP song. This is how I’d like to remember them
This whole album is a BANGER!
The unique groove on this one comes from the Waltz time signature. Good stuff!
This is the best album they have.
Do this album back to back! All gems like this.
This album was a mind blower
This album is a total banger one of my favorite albums all time
The Peppers at their best
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is a CLASSIC!!!!
One of my all time faves from RHCP. The whole album is a masterpiece!!!
Red Hot Chili Peppers are musical wizards and innovators of the highest level. You need to go way deeper!
hell yes. an absolute classic and so much better than most of their singles even on this very album.
This is one of them tunes that everyone dug.
The rolling drums stand out in this one more than anything to me
Manic depression
This is my favorite RHCP album, and glad I own it on vinyl.
Same 🙂
This entire album should be a reaction vid
Definitely their best album imo. I still put that album on and just press play. No skips needed
At this point it is so interesting to see how these two have evolved as music reviewers. If on their first videos the comments were “good”, “cool” “nice vibe” now its pointing to the amazing bass and to the very unique drums that im not sure i have noticed when i first heard the song years ago.
This song is done in 3 time and Chad is the star on this treasure. Excellent song!

This album is a masterpiece. It's their Sargent Pepper's. Rick Rubin's played a major part. Check out the making in the "Funky Monks" documentary.
Chad Smith (Drummer) is the GAOT of rock groove drummers. This song is in 6/8 time... very hard to play live. \m/
This shit right here🔥🔥🔥
Great to have you back, guys
Chili Peppers are my favorite band ever, nice reaction! I really want to see you guys reacting to Black Keys... a fantastic band with some beautiful tunes like Weight of Love, Too Afraid to Love You and many others. Shout out from Brazil!!

The drumming is very manic depression sounding

Check out Suck my Kiss from this album. Absolute banger!
this song is 🔥
Why does no one ever talk about the uplift mofo party plan album? A band based on a plan, a plan based on a band lol. The special secret song inside is so great! No chump love sucker, behind the sun!
My favorite band!! I've been waiting for ya'all to do more Peppers!!!
This is just an average song for that album. It's a transitional song from their punk days to their California sound.
Blood Sugar Sex Magick came out the same day as Nevermind.
This album got me into them. Obviously Under the Bridge, along with Give it Away, and this track, were huge.
6/8 time gives a noticeable "rolling" sort of feel. Combined with the acoustic guitar it's a lot different from their typical rocked out electric funk. "Sir Psycho Sexy" is the one y'all don't know you need.
Soul To Squeeze is a great Chili Peppers song to react to.
Great album their best and funky through out it whole album
Savage album.
You need to do some of the tracks off Blood Sugar Sex Magic. The whole album is great!
At one point this song was always playing on the radio.
blood sugar sex magik is an amazing album
I had this CD in my car 6 disc changer for close to two years, and listened to it every day for almost a year. It is a classic and you guys need to review the CD in it's entirety
I really love this. For me what makes it distinguish is the mellotron used throughout the song. It gives a led zeppelin-ish vibe to it
Blood sugar Sx Magic is a banger of an album…
That had steady rotation on radio back in the day
Gotta listen to HIGHER GROUND from them
Surprised this won the poll
The song didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100, but I remember hearing it regularly on the local alternative radio station in late 1992. It might have gone more mainstream if not for being swallowed up by the big hit on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Under the Bridge.
Great song, my favorite RHCP album
This song always stuck out for me by RHCP. Kinda on the lines of Sour Girl by STP.
RHCP have some great slow jams, but I always feel more into their energy jams. Blood Sugar Sex Magik would make an epic album reaction.
The chorus and the pretty flute sound. Saves tune.
Y'all really need to checkout some tunes from their album "Mother's Milk" too. This is my favorite RHCP album, and the first album with Chad Smith on the drums.
This is my fav pepper song of all time, then UTB & Scar Tissue.
This is the only RHCP song I can still listen to.
This song was HUGE
No, this wasn’t a radio hit …I was in high school when this album came out… check out sir psycho sexy
I Could Have Lied is an underrated banger on this album
This will always be my favourite chilis song. Maybe Venice Queen too though…
Tear is a great song from the Chili Peppers from the "By the Way" album
IF YOU HAVE TO ASK!!!! or sir psycho sexy 😭
You guys have to react to the new king los freestyle
Def not a sleeper song. I know you guys werent listening to rock radio stations during this era, but this song was on the radio constantly.
My favorite track off my favorite RHCP album.
I was never a huge fan of RHCP (although I certainly respect them as being great musicians) but this was always, by far, my favorite song on BSSM. Can't remember for sure but I think this song was written about Ione Skye, she and Anthony lived together when she was a teenager.
LIV, please get to the King Los freestyle. Its so gas
THOSE LITTLE PAUSES TO ME MAN
full album needs doing. more rhcp. much more rhcp
Love this song also dun fact they went though the junkyard to find the perfect junk to bang on for the little drum solo
This was a big song in the 90s. Watch the video, I bet you'll remember it then.
Best song on the album
Check out Eddie by RHCP.
It’s off of their most recent album. It’s an Eddie Van Halen tribute song and it’s awesome
This one has stayed my favorite RHCP track since Jr High.
IMO, their Magnus Opus! Every song is a banger. Such a brilliant Album!!
In a span of a month or so in 1991, this album, along with Nevermind, Ten, Badmotorfinger was released.
Flea also on the flute throughout the song..

One Hot Minute was their last dabble in heavy funk
Yet another band i kick myself for not catching live back in the day.

But hey they still making the money I guess 😂
However, this is a one of the songs I can still listen to, albeit having to listen to that whine of a vocal.
i seem like their stuff when they had dave on guitar with them.
I agree with everyone: do the full album.
And yes, it was a big hit at the time, but you don’t hear it a lot anymore. Very special RHCP song.
Watch Funky Monks, its a documentary of them writing and recording this album
This was a huge RHCP song back in the day. I think it was the third single off of that album after Under the Bridge and Give It Away. MTV played the video constantly. Amazing song, amazing album, amazing underrated band.
