  • Decks Dark. Track 3 from A Moon Shaped Pool.
When I first listened to that album in 2016, while the first two tracks are noteworthy and interesting in their own ways, Decks Dark was the first track from the album that jumped out at me and caught my ear. I was hooked on this song. It's haunting, beautiful, a bit creepy... and epic. Things I had come to love about radiohead over the years, things I had come to expect when I listen to them.
As we settle into the year of "the Smile" in 2022, it seems uncertain if there is another radiohead album on the horizon or not. But for me, I am still happy to revisit any previous albums whenever I get the chance.
    Thankyou for watching and listening!

How can I learn to play like this? Through studying jazz piano? Or is there another way to learn how to make covers / comp?

I grew up playing classical piano as a kid and then moved into jazz - always taking lessons. Over the years I developed my own style. To do the covers the way I do them is a mix of improvisation and playing the song as is. You can learn the chords for each song and learn pop and rock piano techniques and that's how you can do covers. Or you can go the jazz route and try applying that to popular songs that you cover. But really my playing is a mix of jazz and contemporary pop and rock styles. Over time I learned to create a little bit of my own style and way of doing things. I have been playing a long time so the way I play, the habits just form over the years. Improvisation is a big part of it. I'm not sure if this answer makes complete sense but hopefully that helps a little bit. It does not really matter as much where you start, just that you keep up with it and keep doing it. You will find your own ways of doing things over time.

@@NatePhilipsMusic That makes complete sense, thank you so much mate! I've got myself a jazz piano teacher now, and I've been watching pop/rock comping tutorials. Keep up the great work!

Great cover Nate - I love Radiohead and your cover captured the mournful character of their music so well. I just subscribed to your channel. Marc Filmer (Piano Composer)

There is a tutorial video, connected with this performance video. I'm not sure it will explain everything, but it's a start:
